You're sitting at the gaming table, getting ready to play the newly released table-top RPG system, Dungeons and Dungeons and Dragons and Dungeons, published by the acclaimed gaming company Disco Entertainment. You're not too familiar with your party members - you only know the DM, who recruited everyone in the game - but you've heard good things about the system. The marketing for D&D&D&D was crazy, and the hype was immense. It's launch night, and you know countless other gamers will also be cracking open their rulebooks for the first time, all over Equestria.
You hear your DM clear her throat: "It's a pleasant day in the township of Greenwood..." And suddenly everything goes black.
Idea! D&D&D&D, a classic pony-fantasy adventure with a twist. Players will assume the roles of adventures in the fantasy world of Frontier, a wild and untamed land where ponykind struggles to defend civilization against great evil.

The adventurers are actually their players, transported into the fantasy world by a mysterious power! Stuck in the bodies of their own characters, they've inherited the memories of their character's backstory as well, resulting in an individual with memories from two worlds: one, Equestria where the players are from, and two, Frontier, where their characters have their backstories set in. How will this affect the personality and behaviors of the characters? Will they manage to escape back home? How will they deal with the other players also transported to this world?
And, will they become murder hobos?
EDIT: So turns out a project I thought I had to do I didn't have to do, so I might end up actually running this game if there's good enough reception for it!

I do like the idea, but this leads me to one question.
Could you flavor out of character info gaining abilities as literally the players minds breaking free of the world of Frontier for a short time?
Also, this setting makes me really want to build a Metagamer destiny, purely for how flavorful it feels.

This sounds really interesting! I like the out-in-character concept, and the inherent mystery of the setting is fun! I've got my eye on this.

Session 1 Recap (This is for me since my memory is terrible)
At PAX (pony arcade expo) the party of Dice King, Xenran, Gonzo and Crispy Crunch get together to play the starter pack module of the brand new TRPG published by Disco Entertainment, D&D&D&D. To their surprise, as the adventure unfolds they are immediately transported into a tavern in the town of Greenhorn, within the world setting of D&D&D&D. Confused and disoriented, the party gets to grips with their new fused personalities before going to bed, hoping the situation would improve. Much to their chagrin, rather than getting better, they share a dream in which Discord informs them they're trapped in the game until they complete the module - but also that time is frozen while they're in game, so they'll not lose any time at all in the real world. He leaves the party hanging at the question of whether dying in game results in dying in real life, and the dream ends.
Once they've woken up, the party gets acquainted with fellow player Sunspot, and then set out to find more information about their contract. They speak first to the noblemare Golden Glow, then check on bodies of victims by a creature referred to as the 'King of the Forest', finding that the creature seems correlated in some way to the magical apples grown in the town's grove. Finally they go to speak to the huntress Ivy who claims to have seen the beast, who leads the party to the tracks left behind by a titanic beast. By speaking to the spirits of the trees, Gonzo/Wild Tongue finds out the identity of the King of the Forest --

Session 2 Recap
The party follow the tracks of the beast, stopping briefly to deal with a bandit lying in ambush. The bandit is sent by Sylvester Briarthorn of the Briarthorn gang, and mentions that a wizard has struck a deal with the bandits to keep an eye on the owlbear. After gaining (See: painfully extracting) what information that they can from the stallion, the party moves on to confront the owlbear. Negotiations break down when the owlbear stubbornly refuses to leave, but after the party proves capable in battle the owlbear begins to reconsider its hasty aggression. Before peace can be made, though, the owlbear is assassinated by the party necromancer. The session leaves off with outrage from the party paladins and druid, as well as the discovery of two eggs - one laid in the owlbear's nest, the other extracted from the owlbear's dead body.

Session 3 Recap
The party squabbles over what to do with the giant owlbear corpse, and eventually decides to allow Zeyan to cleanly remove its head as proof of its existence, transporting it back to town with a makeshift sled. After shenanigans with zombies, the party collects their reward of 50 gold each, except for Halyo who instead requests for a plot of land to set up a sacred grove away from home. The party then return to the tavern, where they start to tend to the eggs they've discovered in the nest. One seems to be hale and hearty, but one seems worryingly cool.
That night they have another shared dream, where Discord tries to send them back to the real world, but experiences 'technical difficulties' and departs to check on what's going on. The party wakes up, and are disappointed to find they've not yet been reverted to their original forms.
A short time later Zeyan gets an idea, and uses his Dreamwalk ability to peek into the eggs to see what's going on. He determines that the warm egg houses a baby owlbear, while the druid is able to recognize the cool egg to house an owlbear-Ursa hybrid which seems to be taking its time with hatching. The owlbear baby hatches successfully, and is immediately adopted by Wild Tongue. Zeyan and Sunspot go to acquire golden apples to for the baby to eat, having a little chat in the meantime. At the same time Halyo manages to sate his hunger by feeding off of terrible puppy love from the actual puppy. Upon returning to the party, Zeyan tries to play matchmaker, and ends up getting put through a wall as Halyo and Sunspot have a private talk. Sunspot reveals via Empathy that she does have feelings for Halyo, but is hesitant for some reason. Halyo returns her feelings, but Sunspot loses her nerve and runs. After catching up to her Halyo and Sunspot have a bit of a heart to heart, and Sunspot explains she needs some time to tell Halyo something if they're to actually go into a relationship.

Sunspot, Wild Tongue and Zeyan go to speak to the deceased owlbear via necromancy, and learns of the circumstances that lead to the current situation: the owlbear grew large in its youth from feeding off of the golden apples of Greenhorn. After a brief tryst with an ursa, the owlbear returned to its home to lay its eggs, preying on the caravans to acquire golden apples to help the development of its eggs. Meanwhile, Halyo begins to construct a sacred grove dedicated to his faith. Meanwhile meanwhile, Nightmane/Crispy Crunch have egg-sitting duty. He chats with the innkeeper for a bit, then goes out and decides to help the town construct a magical circle to repel possible fiendish threats.
When the party reconvenes in the tavern, they are surprised by Discord, who seems panicked and is on the run. He disappears just in time to escape a unicorn who calls himself 'Star'. Star explains that he's allegedly stolen the majority of Discord's control over the world of Frontier, and is hunting Discord down to assume total control of the world. Just as the session ends, Zeyan summons a zombie to attack Star to prove his claims.

Session 5 Recap
Continuing the conversation with Star, after he dismisses the zombie and demonstrates his powers by flickering the tavern out of existence, he tries to convince the party to stay in the world of Frontier, and when that fails he remarks that the party is trapped anyway and departs. Afterwards Discord returns and explains the situation to them: by exploiting a magical loophole in Discord's spell Star has hijacked his control over the world, except he is unable to affect players due to not fully stealing Discord's powers. Discord proposes a plan for the party to defeat Star, and they all swear a soul contract to stop Star's scheme and return to the normal world.
Afterwards, Wild Tongue leaves to take care of the Ursa egg that isn't hatching, separating from the party for expediency. The party then leaves the town of Greenhorn, traveling to the city of Orehardt to the west to investigate reports of troubles in the city's famed mines. The trip is uneventful, and after about a week and a half of trekking they make it to the city gates. They are questioned by the guards, who are suspicious of the changeling paladin due to the city having experienced changeling troubles in the past. However they are permitted to enter the city, on the condition that they get approval from the lord of the city, Steel Crucible.

At Orehardt, the party trades their wizard for the rights for Halyo to operate within the city, and finds lodging in the Roasted Rat tavern. It's sad, but the dog is gone so it's a net win.
At the tavern the party discovers that the comatose pony they were carrying around has woken up, introducing herself as Tipsy Mosey, a rude alcoholic practitioner of the drunken hoof style. After a joke at the expense of Zeyan's pride the newly constituted party heads off to speak to the guild-mistress of the miner's guild in Orehardt for information about the strike that's going on. According to Panner, the miners have been seeing all kinds of things in the mines, and fearing for their lives have refused to work until adventurers came to clear out the mines. Zeyan speaks to the representatives of the miners, and secures her service as a guide in the mines when they eventually go to explore them. Halyo and Mosey then go to gather more intel from the miners, while Zeyan and Sunspot head back to the tavern.
On the way to the tavern, Zeyan gets sidetracked by a magic item shop called Zelmont's Bizarre Bazaar, and there he purchases a few magical items before heading back, with a student of alchemy named Alabaster in tow, who seems fascinated by the owlbear baby. Back in the tavern, they all relax for the night, Zeyan and Mosey almost have a character bonding moment, and everything is great.

They first stop by the Bizarre Bazaar to rent a vampire-proof headlight, then venture into the mines, where they find one of the sources of the disturbance: a colony of isolationist bat ponies. They react negatively to the party, but one batpony, Chitter, invites the party to come to the enclave.

They discuss the matters of the evil changelings infesting the mines, and describe a strange new strand of changelings with bestial features. She then indoctrinates Halyo into their spiritual beliefs - a system of ancestor worship known as the Echo. Returning to the surface with Chitter in tow, the party works to solve Chitter's sun sensitivity, then Zeyan and Halyo have a moment where Zeyan spills his tragic backstory.

After filling her in on the details, the party sets off back into the mines, with a warning from Chitter that something might have happened to the tribe. It turns out a batpony filly, Hush, was taken by mutant changelings, and the party goes to reclaim her. They happen upon the sight of two monstrosities tearing each other apart over a cowering earth pony, and after Halyo takes a while to steel himself, they prepare to fight the final monstrosity, only for the earth pony to reveal itself as another horrible creature, which drags the monstrosity underground and disappears.
The party find a hidden door, going into a facility containing more tortured monsters as well as emaciated prisoners captured from the mines. The party find also a journal, which reveals the culprit to be a certain Alabaster, who has struck a deal with changelings and is using their genes to create terrible chimeric hybrids. The party manages to alert the guard, and has the facility seized by them. After returning Hush to the bat ponies, the party decides to go and find the changeling's hive and confront them.

The party returns to the surface, and are immediately requested by guards to go and investigate a strange mist rising at the city gates. Despite expecting trouble, the mist actually reveals a friendly face: Haskia's previous ally, Aurora Haze, a warlock of the Lady of the Lake. She joins the party, and after taking a brief respite at the Roasted Rat, the party goes to speak to Lord Crucible, the minotaur noble in charge of Orehardt's ruling. They report the events that have transpired in the mines, mentioning the bat ponies as well as the changelings still dwelling beneath the mountain. They also pick up rumors of strange sinkholes appearing throughout the city, but don't know why.

The party, after gathering supplies, ventures back into the mines to deal with the changeling threat. Chitter the batpony guides them down into some tunnels, and they continue on their own after that, running into an excavating party of deep changelings. Halyo initiates contact, and after a few exchanged sentences gets the party an audience with the Queen of the hive, Ataraxia.
The Queen reveals the true plight of their hive: after centuries of scraping by on the edge of starvation, the hive collectively has become incapable of controlling their feeding, draining their victims of all emotional energy. This is taboo in changeling culture, and knowing their hive will be wiped out if they dared venture into the surface, they stayed in their squalid home underground. The party offers to try and find a solution for their feeding issue, with Halyo suggesting an alliance between his hive and hers, so that his can serve as a middle-man for providing food for Ataraxia's hive.
After an uncomfortable but blunt talk with Screech about tolerating the changelings, the party return to the surface for rest.

The party takes a rest, consulting Discord on their progress, who reveals they should be nearing their next level up. They talk to Lord Crucible afterwards, discussing the logistics of introducing two new races into the city's diplomatic sphere, and also get some following up information on Alabaster from Crucible's court wizard, learning of his involvement with a group of nefarious magic users known as the Black Hex and his probable flight to the easterly city of Springvale.
After that, the party has a discussion regarding their course of action, and decides that Haskia and Tipsy Mosey will hunt down Alabaster, while Halyo and Sunspot escort the representative from Ataraxia's hive to Halyo's home hive. With that settled the party has some free time, which Haskia uses to visit Zelmont's Bizarre Bazaar for some shopping. Session 13 Recap:
In the morning, the party prepares to split, meeting up a last time at the city gates. Here Discord drops a surprise on them: the return of the druid, Wild Tongue, and her player Gonzo. Once they get acquainted, the party sets off, while Halyo and Sunspot stays behind.
The trio heads west, stopping by a village plagued by undead. They promise to investigate, and set off into the forest in the morning. They encounter a tribal berserker resurrected by dark magic, One Pony Bucket, who had previously engaged the necromancer responsible for the undead. Once they got into the source of the undead, a crypt belonging to an ancient warlord, the party faced off against the necromancer, who resurrected the ancient warlord's dragon companion. The party managed to beat the dragon and escape before the chamber collapses, and in the wake of the fight, discover a tent belonging to the necromancer hidden to one side.
In the tent is a journal with an invitation to the Black Hex's annual meeting in Springvale.

The party arrives in Springvale, which appears to be a little out of sorts: the people are furtive and suspicious, and according to Tipsy's friend and local bartender Rosy Spirits they've been acting strangely since visitors from out of town came starting about month ago. After meeting another player, a ranger named Wild Rose, the party discusses the happenings in the city with Spirits: the local lady is holding a banquet in about a week, and strange figures have been seen entering the walled inner city.
The party then sets out to intercept what they assume is a convoy of these visitors, which they've concluded must be the members of the Black Hex. However, when they do confront them, the party discovers rather than being physical entities, these appear to be magical footprints akin to projections of some sort - a physical reflection of a powerful spell at work. These Reflections seems to be channeling some kind of mind-altering magic, which afflicts Rose, confusing her and compelling her to leave. Bucket, however, manages to draw the attention of the caster of this magic.

Wild Rose had to step out to run an errand, and the rest of the party (sans Bucket) go out to gather information about getting into the inner city. They end up speaking to a shady griffon named Galan who says if they kill Rosy Spirits he'll secure a way for them into the inner city. The party then orders formal clothes for Bucket, and afterwards get into an underground brawling ring where Tipsy beats a drake named Titan and Bucket is narrowly beaten by a diamond dog named Skullcrusher.
That night the party returns to the Spring Lady, and have a thoughtful chat about their worldviews over dinner.
