Big Manehatten Blues (IC Post)

Post  Goldstone14 on Wed Jan 24, 2018 6:36 pm

Rain falls heavy on the city of Manehatten, casting the city in a dull gray overtone. Days like these remind some of the dark underworld that runs the city. Gangs and mafia own the streets and clubs, but there are the few who don't obey the commands of the gangs and mafias. There are some who do fight back.
------------------------------------------------------------------
The day was heavy in rain and water. Most ponies found themselves in the shelter of cabs or buildings, waiting for the heavy storm to pass, and in one of these buildings would be a small gathering of ponies. The party was being hosted for the great Madam Clairvoyance, a seance of sorts. Out of circumstance, a minotaur and a diamond dog who normally weren't in the area had been brought into the building to avoid the massive storm.

About 12 ponies milled through a big room, waiting for their chance to talk to this 'great mystic' and have their ancestors communed with.

Gravedigger Sparky found himself in the lobby, not being let into the event if he wanted to partake, since it was a private event, but was being allowed into the lobby to at least avoid the heavy downpour of water.

Ivan had been caught in the rain after riding in a one of his old rival's cabs, the driver saying that he was going to wait out the storm. Ivan was given the same saying from the staff that Gravedigger Sparky got, saying he was welcome to sit in the lobby but not be part of the seance.

Bonehead and Madam Clairvoyance were in a backroom of the auditorium, Madam Clairvoyance likely getting ready to put on a show, while Bonehead working as her guard at the door.

Bonehead slips out from behind the backstage, and heads into the crowd. He makes no pretenses that he's part of the audience, but still he goes to mingle with those who came for the seance, beginning the process of hot reading of the guests: listening for names, background information, possible intentions and the like, as well as covertly ensuring no one carries weapons or dangerous materials into the seance.

Perception for Hot Reading: 12 + 12 = 24

Clairvoyance hums under her breath, pondering over her tools of the trade. Crystal ball, or Crystal skull? She weighs both in her hooves for a moment before eventually settling on the crystal skull. It's more thematically appropriate for the seance.

Murmuring quietly, she waves a hoof over the crystal skull, causing it to light up with a mysterious pale flame, as well as attuning it to the frequency of the equine mind. All in preparation of the ritual, though of course she won't begin the seance until she gets the information she needs about the crowd.

Which reminds her, she needs to get in touch with Bonehead. Reaching out with her mind, she asks him, How is our audience looking tonight? Anyone of note?

Abilities:
Telepathy (3) – At Will (13)
You can communicate silently with other willing characters that you can either see or that you know very well within 1000 feet.

Enchanting (3) – 3/Day (30) (2 used)
When you select this ability you may choose three of the following enchantments for free. When you activate this ability, you may activate one of the enchantments you chose this way. You may choose additional enchantments for 1 point each.

Arcane Alarm – Enchantment
Preparation Time: 10 seconds
A small object you touch becomes an Arcane Alarm for the next 8 hours. If any living thing enters within 40 feet of the Arcane Alarm it sends a small telepathic alert to the caster. You may end this effect at any time, and you can only have 3 arcane alarms active at a time.

Eternal Flame – Enchantment
Preparation Time: 5 seconds
Create a magical, heatless fire that lasts until you dismiss it.  You may only have one Eternal Flame active at a time.

Staring out at the storm that poured down outside, Sparky couldn't help but let his ears droop as he shivered from more then just the water that damped his fur. Ever since he had been a young pup, the sound of thunder had always had a rather... poor effect on him. It was just so loud and sounded like it was coming from everywhere at once while pounding into his skull. If he had been at home, he would have put some wood in his little metal fireplace, put some earplugs in his ears and curl up by the fire and read a book as he waited out the storm in as much comfort as he could afford.

Instead he was standing in some strange building that was kind enough to provide him with shelter, resisting the urge to speak up about how the seance they had all come to see was likely some kind of parlor trick to scam them out of their hard earned money out of concern that he would find the good will of his hosts disappearing and him back out in the storm and trying his best not to whimper or wince at the distant claps of thunder.

Instincts older then sentience kicked in as the graying Sparky suddenly started to shake himself dry, floofying up his fur while spraying those gathered in the front room of the building with water.

The cab creaks and bounces up as Ivan Leadhoof steps off, giving a half-hearted wave back to the other driver as he goes inside. Maybe at least this place will have some damn coffee.

One cab shot up. Another stolen. Spending the night in jail because the third one was a 'Legger drug runner with a pound of bam-bam still taped under it. All in the same damn week.

Coffee in the lobby. Tastes a little burnt, but still a step up from the rash of hard luck Ivan's had.

The Diamond Dog shakes himself dry. Now Ivan's coffee tastes like burnt wet feet. Still an improvement.

A bland grey earth pony stares forlornly out at the rain. Inkwell sighs, patting at his wet mane to get it out of his face. Just his luck to be caught outside when it suddenly rains. After another long sigh, he decides to make the most of things and looks around for someone to talk to. That diamond dog seems friendly enough.

He waits for Sparky to shake himself dry and wanders up to make idle chatter.

"Weather's not great, eh?"

Bonehead finds nothing of interest in items, but he does get quite a few snippets of information. A mare by the name of Haymane had recently lost her grandmother to a gang shoot out that she got caught in the cross fire of. A few things like names and birthdays, and recent raises caught his ears as well. by the time he was contacted by Madam, he had gotten plenty of info.

At Sparky shaking the water from his fur, a stallion rushes out with a towel, coving the diamond dog with it.
"Refrain from getting the lobby wet please!"

Ivan was brought a seat, properly sized for a minotaur, and Inkwell was nodded to by the staff member as he walked by.
"Are you not going into the event sir? Or are you not here for it?"

One called Haymane lost her gran in a shootout. Mm... a couple other things. Seems like there's someone pretending to be that author, Inkwell. It's the red-maned unicorn in the crowd. I don't think he has weapons or anything but it could be a sign of trouble. I'll dim the lights, the guests are ready to be received.

Bonehead slinks off to arrange for the lights to be dimmed, then retreats to a corner of the auditorium, keeping a watchful eye over the guests, especially the one claiming to be Inkwell. The seance should start at any moment now, and sometimes the participants can get emotional, so it's important to remain vigilant.

Sparky grunted a little as a towel was thrown on him, turning to look at the stallion that had thrown it with quiet, judging eyes as if he had just insulted his mother before taking the towel and drying himself with it.

Grumbling under his breath about not letting an old dog have some fun, his attention turned to the bland grey stallion whom had asked him about the weather. "It could be worse. It could be raining cats. Last thing anyone needs to a bunch of perfectionists with ego issues complaining about having their fur get wet." The grin at the end of his statement easily suggested that he was joking... somewhat... maybe. "I take it you're here to enjoy some shelter from the storm as well sir?"

As soon as the lights dim, Clairvoyance draws up the hood on her cloak and steps out into the auditorium. Her crystal skull flickers with the ghastly pale flames, and she makes her movements slow and deliberate as she drifts up to the front of the crowd.

"Greetings," She says, bowing deeply to her guests. "As you may already know, I am Madame Clairvoyance, purveyor of the mystic arts. You have all come here with a particular purpose in mind. I intend to assist you in achieving that purpose."

"The process to invite the deceased back into this world is very delicate, so I can only assist one of you at a time." Clairvoyance casts a slow look over the audience.

Eventually, using the information Bonehead feeds her, she points Haymane out of the crowd. "I sense a recent tragedy about you, a loss in the family. Are you here to seek closure for that?"

"Erm, no, I'm not involved in this event," Inkwell answers the staff member. At Sparky's question, Inkwell nods quickly, gesturing at his damp hair and bag. "Yeah... I was out doing some light shopping when the downpour hit. This was the closest place I could find. What brings you here? Well, aside from the rain, anyway."

While Sparky respectfully fell silent as the show that so many ponies had gathered in the building to see began, it was merely because he wanted to be polite and avoid getting kicked out. In his line of work, he had seen all manners of con artists and vultures prey on the mourning and vulnerable; Granted a fair number of them worked in the funeral industry itself, but 'mediums' were a parasite that clung to it like a big ugly tick.

Keeping his voice down as he ignored Madame Clairvoyance completely, he softly answered the pony he was talking to "Was just on my way home after attending an appointment. Thought I would have had a bit more time but there had been a slight delay." He made no mention of who the appointment was with or what the nature of it was, but he seemed fairly relaxed as he offered the pony a paw to shake. "My name is Sparky. Nice to meet you."

"Inkwell," Inkwell tips his head a little, putting out a hoof to shake the paw. He would tip his hat but he's not wearing one right now. A beat passes, and he feels the need to explain, "Not the, er, best-selling author. I'm just a desk clerk. Ponies mix us up sometimes."
