The Deer Tribes
So those of you who follow my Hooved Races topic know I'm trying to incorperate EVERY HOOVED RACE EVA! Which amounts to Cloven hooves and Solid hooves, not things like elephants. But when we get to the deer...
There are a freaking lot of things called deer.
Which is why, instead, I take the option of the Deer Tribes. They're supposed to be seclusionary and scattered across the globe, with a race-wide trait that emphasizes how good they are at hiding from ponies (more on that later), and a SECOND trait that comes specificly from what tribe their from. Moose Tribe, Red Tribe, White-tail Tribe, Muntjac tribe.... Anyway, I could uses some help here.

The fics It's a Dangerous Business, Going Out Your Door and Under the northern light have some very good ideas for the deer but you should ask the authors before using their ideas.

One thing I can say from personal experience is that white-tails especially are very nimble. I live in Louisiana, and I've seen them running through forests at a gallop, flitting all over the place and jumping gaps like nothing.
Perhaps they could get some kind of bonus to Athletics or Precision checks when jumping and navigating rough terrain?

Speaking as a Pennsylvanian, they aren't that perceptive or impressive. Then again we lack the natural enemies to thin the herds, so our deer probably aren't the best genetic stock for that.
On one RP site I used to frequent, deer were terrified of how brightly colored ponies were, not to mention their flying, loud noises, sharp horns, magic, and general insanity. They also developed the martial art of Tai Kwan Doe.

Precisely. But really now then, are the different species of deer so great as to justify a huge number of races? Moose/elk, standard deer, and miniature deer seem like a nice enough division to me. 3 groups just like ponies, but just as diverse. Anybunny else like this idea?

Not sure whether you're for or against cutie marks in this instance.

Re: The Deer Tribes
I'm 100% for raindeer having the cutie mark mechanics. But I'm more on the fence if they have a "cutie mark" itself...

Nah, reindeer shouldn't have CMs, they should have flight. Come on people, it's December.
