If it's the insta-kill aspect that people are concerned about, what about a slight rewording?
12: Roll a d12. If you roll a 12, set target creature's HP to zero. [or -50%, etc.]
That changes it so that the GM and players can decide for themselves if 0 HP means death, or merely being knocked unconscious (for a plot critical enemy, say). Since the setting is My Little Pony, after all, not every group may want to kill their enemies for various reasons.
