The Nuzlocke Challenge
I just started one here: follow the story of Crimson as he derps his way through Leafgreen thinking that grass beats fire. Anypony else have a run they'd like to share?

Re: The Nuzlocke Challenge
Running a Fire Red Nuzlock IRL right now.
Current rules:
1) Faint = Permadead
2) Only one catch per route, must catch first thing (pre-pokeballs doesn't count for fairness)
3) Nickname everything
4) Starter must stay in party
5) Starter dies, game over
6) No TMs, only use HMs once.
7) No skipping trainer fights.
No running from wild battles unless all Pokemon are in the yellow or worse.
9) No repel or escape rope.
10) You can catch legendary Pokemon, but you can't use them.
Current Casualties:
Batman the Zubat
Badges: 5
Also, sleep powder + Abra + pokeball = How did I do that?
That's right, caught an Abra! Now Zatana is a Kadabra!

If you can only use HMs once, does that mean that when the HM Pokemon dies, you are pretty much stuck?Whiteeyes wrote:6) No TMs, only use HMs once.

Yikes, you've imposed some grueling rules on yourself! No TMs and only one HM use? Yeesh. Since you only have one casualty thus far, though, I'm assuming you're doing well thus far. Especially since you somehow caught an Abra.
Also, I think I sense a DC Comics theme in your naming. Batman, Zatanna... who's your starter and what's he (or maybe she) named?

Bulbasaur, named him Greenman. All males are named (something obvious)man! All female Pokemon are named after appropriate superheroines! Batman was a coincidence.

Actually, I think there actually is a Green Lantern named Green Man out there. XD I'll grant that your system of naming the males is simpler, though.

Yup, there's a C-Sharp Bell running around somewhere. Haven't seen him recently, though.

Re: The Nuzlocke Challenge
Decided to start my own Nuzlocke challenge on FireRed. I'm going a tad bit easier, but not much. My rules are:
1 ) Faint = Dead. Starter Faint = Game Over, unless I have a baby starter. This is because I miraculously got a female Squirtle (Sparkle).
2 ) Can not refuse Trainer Battles. Okay.
3 ) If I don't have 6 'mons, I take the first one(s) that come along. Exception: I don't have to take multiples. If I don't like one, I can release one if I don't like it, but only after it's either made one KO or gained one level.
Current Party:
Level 6 "Sparkle" - Female Squirtle, Timid
Nothing else, yet.

Re: The Nuzlocke Challenge
Female Squirtle? Lucky... Why exactly did they make a 25% chance of a female starter? I'm pretty sure a 3-to-1 ration of males and females wouldn't help them survive... like, at all. Don't get me started on why the heck the final Nido evos can't breed. I don't think Gamefreak thought any of that through very well.

AUGH, I had just managed to forget the existence of that abomination, that crime against nature, decency, and common sense! GAMEFREAK, I CURSE YOU WITH LOGIC! MAY THE KNOWLEDGE OF YOUR MANY MISTAKES HAUNT YOU TO THE END OF YOUR DAYS!!!!!!!
That being said, I still love the game. Just doesn't make sense if you look at it too hard.

Re: The Nuzlocke Challenge
Careful, Grey. Confidence is good. Overconfidence, however, may well come back to bite you in a Nuzlocke.
That being said, that first gym should be a breeze. The only starter who has any trouble against Brock whatsoever is Charmander, and you have Squirtle.
On a completely different note, having a Hasty Fluttershy is indeed funny.

Also, remember: overleveling is a myth. You are never overleveled for a gym battle... unless it's Brock and you have Bulbasaur or Squirtle and it's not HGSS Brock and wow that's a lot of qualifiers and why can't I end this sentence and what happened to all my punctuation oh there it is so let's end this sentence now while we still can before it grows so big that it engulfs the world and suffocates everypony in it because that would be really bad I don't want to be dead ah dang it I really should stop now...

Re: The Nuzlocke Challenge
UiYeah. Usually when I take Charmander I try and get a Butterfree (for Confusion) and/or a Mankey (for Low Kick), they both make it tons easier. But, I'm primarily doing this for nostalgia (it's been YEARS since I played this) and I always liked Squirtle best. No particular reason for that.

Re: The Nuzlocke Challenge
Squirtle's pretty cool, but IMO, Bulbasaur's where it's at. Gotta love Leech Seed for catching Pokemon (unless you need another grass type). A good switch-in for all those darn Poison types, too. I'll admit that I'm probably biased, though; grass types tend to be my favorites. Except Chikorita, who's just bad, and Torterra, who's just not as exciting as Sceptile or Venusaur or Serperior. Ah, Serperior with Coil and Leaf Blade, can't beat that. Not to mention I put the Rocky Helmet on him. Anything physical best have type advantage and STAB to get through that guy. :3
Maybe I should rename this as the "gush about Pokemon" thread. XD

Re: The Nuzlocke Challenge
I'm more of a water person.
Tactically speaking, if you're gonna go with type triangles, I try and get Fire/Water/Electric rather than Fire/Water/Grass. This is because Grass has quite a few weaknesses that Electricity lacks; Also, Grass and Water share at least two strengths IIRC (Rock and Ground), and so Electricity provides more flexibility.
No serious changes in party except for some level ups.

Re: The Nuzlocke Challenge
Ah, grass is kinda lacking in the strengths department, but I really like status conditions, what can I say? But you're right, aside from that, water can do everything grass can, better. But hey, Ludicolo! Not much status conditioning there, but a wonderful Pokemon overall. There's a reason Wallace uses one.
Fire I tend to just avoid for some reason. Blaziken and Infernape being notable exceptions. But if I'm not starting with fire, I prefer other types. Grass has plenty of weaknesses, bug is not really a concern because they're fragile, ice I prefer using a fighting type on, and I always have a ground type, so steel's not a problem.
Water... well, I always end up with one since I need Surf/Waterfall/Dive to proceed in the games. They're okay, I guess. I'd like 'em better if there wasn't so much surfing with random water type encounters. Thank goodness for Unova.
Electric's not my favorite. Fast, hit fairly hard, but fragile. Except Electivire. I gotta train one of those things someday.

I like Magnetron. Not so fast, but not so fragile either.
For fast and hard I like Kadabra or Haunter, depending on mood. Probably the later on this run; sure I'll have to wait, but it's easier to get...

Re: The Nuzlocke Challenge
True, Electric/Steel does have its benefits. But I try to shy away from double weaknesses if I can, unless it's Swampert, because Swampert is awesome. Or unless I'm on a Nuzlocke and have to take what I can get. XD
Yeah, I'd go Haunter unless you get REALLY lucky and manage to have an Abra as the first Pokemon and catch it on the first shot.
Oh, by the by, if you like fantastic stories with your Nuzlockes, check this guy out. He has the best stuff EVAR. So long as you don't mind relatively heavy swearing (then again, that seems par for the course with Nuzlocke stories) and the occasional dirty joke.

Re: The Nuzlocke Challenge
I tend not to worry about double weaknesses too much; since anyone who's trying can simply avoid such a situation.
Ironically, quite a few of my favorites are double-weakness. Butterfree, Haunter, Magnetron, Gravellor...

Scotch has been... DISMISSED. He didn't die, I simply decided he wasn't worthwhile.

Lvl 8 "Sparkles" F Squirtle
* I love emulators.
Fluttershy + Metapod Trainer + Fast Forward + Auto Fire = Instant Evolve.
