Players should/GMs should encourage players to take notes. Nothing too complex but small notes of characters you've met, artifacts discussed or encountered, and places you've been to helps increase the feeling of progress and also gives you a heads up in case the GM reuses something. In theory, this is easier in play by post since there's no time pressure and you can actually backtrack at any time.

COMBATS SHOULD ALWAYS TRY TO HAVE THREE OUTCOMES THE WIN OUTCOME, THE LOSE OUTCOME, & A DRAW OUTCOME... Whatever those are might vary form combat to combat, but the GM should try to plan for all three outcomes for all combats.
