Pony Art Story Time?

Post  Grey Pen The Flawed on Thu Jan 24, 2013 3:21 pm

A while back, I found this mini-series of webcomics where the artist would post an image, and then the viewers would describe "what happened next", which the artist would then draw for the next day. Repeat ad nauseam. It was called "Story Time," and it was rather akin to a Choose Your Own Adventure Book, or some RPs I've seen.

Because I want to improve my drawing skills, I am contemplating starting such a thing, and would like your opinions regarding the wisdom (or lack thereof) of doing so.

More interactivity and farming out some of your plot to your audience? Sounds like fun.

The worst that can happen is that you get some practice and we boo you, burn down your house, and exile you to the moon.

Yeah, pretty much, though with (a little) less silliness. Or rather, a different kind of silliness.

Well, it primarily depends on what you think you can handle. While I'm not sure of the exact form of "Story Time" (links would be appreciated), the endeavor sounds similar to the tumblr comic Moonstuck.

The main "hurdles" I could foresee are 1. how much control you wish to have over the narrative, and 2. how to sift through the responses you get (while this forum may be a relatively friendly place, opening it up to the Internet at large may result in a lot of "kill the love interest", "have the Time Lord/Death Star/ other intellectual property show up", and "and then they f*****d" responses).

Just remember, this is YOUR project, and it's important that you continue only if YOU enjoy it. If you need a break, take it. If you're continuing only out of "obligation" to your fans, stop.

I, for one, would be interested to help contribute, and I would look forward to seeing what you can do.

Linkage: Let's Draw Story Time Of Epicness was where I found this idea initially.

Desired Control Level: While I certainly will allow the viewers to make suggestions, there will be rules regarding what gets picked, according to what I'm able/willing to draw. So it wouldn't be hard to keep it kid/copyright friendly. Moreover, what does get picked will ultimately be my decision, though I will keep you guys in mind.

I will probably come up with an RNG mechanic to take some control out of everyone's hands; with a die of some sort deciding how successful a given action is (when appropriate).

Dedication Level: Assuming I go through with this, it is VERY low priority; If other obligations are getting in the way, or if I simply don't feel like drawing right now, I won't.

Intended Audience: For now, just the Pony Tales Forum. If I decide I like doing this enough, I may move it up and outwards, though I don't know where to yet.

Sounds neat. I'd definitely keep an eye on it and suggest stuff as it went on. I love projects that work as a way to improve one's artistic abilities Very Happy

Actually, I was thinking we'd go for a unicorn; since a talented unicorn can either do or fake most of the same things any other pony could do, it would result in more options for the audience to suggest.

But I dunno.

I can see that everyone here apparently thinks it's a good idea; I'll start looking into the hows of it. In particular, I need to see about making the scanner do my bidding...

Well, you could do three main characters, unicorn, pegasus, & an earth pony.

Pegasus wings are hard to draw right (from my very limited experience) Razz

But yeah, having three characters would be pretty awesome.

That's a thought. Would these three ponies be one cohesive party, or individuals who's paths may happen to cross here and there?

I'd say individuals, just so you don't have to draw all of them all the time.

Another thought might be that if we get an Ending, the new one would be a different race in turn. So if the Unicorn dies, the next one is a Pegasus; when the Pegasus gets hitched, the new one is an Earth Pony. Repeat ad nauseam.

Re: Pony Art Story Time?

That's a very iffy proposition. First it assumes that anyone will be trying to conclude the stories or lives of these characters. Second it means you're stuck with whatever is the current main character even if you want to practice something else. And if you decide you do, you'd have to kill off the previous one. Which makes it tricky when you want to go back and practice that thing again.
Edit: Also there's the risk of putting of you viewership by killing off (doesn't need to be literal) their favorite character or such things.

Yeah, I think three characters with three quite different colour schemes could be a good form of practice Very Happy (I'll definitely end up with a favourite character)

If you want a real challenge, make one of them have a spotty coat pattern. (Note: This will probably drive you insane.)

UPDATE!

I do in fact have a way to publish drawings. It's not ideal, but it does at least work...

So! I will be posting the Beginning here any day now!
