Re: A New World
Ch'aska does in fact see, checking out the alcoves under the months and days, a smallish stone box with a keyhole under the current month (looks like its inlaid into the alcove- difficult or impossible to remove). All the other alcoves are empty, although the only easily accessable ones are the current day and month, as well as the past two and next two- after that the calendar continues into the walls, hiding their contents (if any) until the passage time causes the calendar to move.
Re: A New World
"Wait,I think I found something. A locked box." Carefully, Ch'aska reached out and tried to open the box, on the (very) slim chance that it was unlocked. Hopefully, doing so wouldn't set off some horrible trap, but she braced her self just in case.

Re: A New World
As you suspect, the box does not open, or move. Nor does your attempt to open seem to trigger anything either.
Re: A New World
Ch'aska withdrew her hoof. "Yes, definitely locked. Anyone see a key?"

Re: A New World
"It's something at least." Arcantos said, stepping forwards and giving the box a glance over, before turning and looking around. "Still... why build this so big, if this is the only room? I think there's either another entrance into the temple, or a hidden doorway."

Re: A New World
Ch'aska nodded. If the thing in the box was what they were looking for, then this did seem suspiciously easy. Where were the fire traps and lava pits? She moved away from the box for now. "Good point. All the more reason to search the room." Ch'aska started scanning the room. While doing so she also prepared her magic. that box was currently their only lead, and either way she was going to open it, through fore if necessary.

- Perception check focusing on the walls and floor this time for switches and stuff, all while still trying to avoid touching anything. I guess looking for a key too, although I doubt it's just lying around.

Also, prepping Weaken Substance so we have the option of trying that on the box.

Re: A New World
"Here, Rufus, why don't you search about the calendar and altar for clues to the box, and I'll see if these walls hold secrets, eh?" The mole nods his affirmation, and scurries off near the centerpieces of the room, while Piasa walks around the room, studying the walls and floor for some sign of intrigue, some clue that there is more than meets the eye here.
- OOC and sorry:
- Sorry it's been so long since I had something meaningful to add here. I'm really really tired and probably about to come off the caffeine I have been regularly consuming, so let's get this double perception check done. Also, does Rufus get Grandeur from me? He's technically an ally of mine, even if he is basically a class feature. I'll hold off on that until I know for sure.
Perception, Rufus, By the Calendar and Altar: 16 + 7 = 21
Perception, Piasa, Checking the walls and floor: 2 + 6 = 8. Well, that roll could have been worse, but only a little bit

Re: A New World
Arcantos was tempted not to search himself, but decided that the room was definitely big enough for them to all search... still he didn't join in right away, just looking around the room and pondering the situation...
- GM ONLY:
- As he did, so Arcantos reached for the spirit of the skull. "Any ideas how to get inside? If there is an inside."

Re: A New World
- Ch'aska:
- The walls are covered in murals, with some glyphs carved into the stone rather than painted, but nothing seems to be a hidden switch. Some of the murals depict sacrifices being made on the altar in the room, or the one outside- thankfully not any llamas, but still hardly pleasant material to look at- so much blood. Thankfully, there seems to be little evidence of it now, other than the odd suspicious-looking dark spot on the floor, or speck of brownish-red paint on the murals. The altar itself is spotless.
- Piasa/Rufus:
- Rufus doesn't seem to want to go near the altar, but scampers about it giving it a quick look. "Clean." he squeaks. He scurries around the calendar mechanism, peeking in and going inside the alcoves to take a closer look. He squeaks to you, spotting something in the part of the calendar still set in the wall- the alcove of a day several days from now. "Shiny!"
Meanwhile, you look at the walls, and their lovely samples of ancient draconic painting.
OOC: I would say Rufus gets the Grandeur bonus. He is his own entity, even if under your direct (?) control, and I'd definitely consider him an "ally".
- Arcantos:
- "There should be- in a lesser temple I would say there was no inside, with the bulk of the structure being solid, but at the very least there must be space for the full Calendar mechanism. The old priests surely would have had a way to get in, but I have no idea what that would be."
Re: A New World
Arcantos spoke after a few moments thoughts, asking. "Has anyone checked the mechanism of the calender? For a temple like this, I think there's more to it then we can see currently, and if we discover more about the mechanism, we might find our way in."

Re: A New World
Ch'aska shrugged, turning back to the calender. There didn't seem to be much on the walls except a lot of gruesome paintings, so might as well check the mechanisms themselves. "I can try, but I don't know much about machines and things like that. If either of you are familiar with that sort of thing, you might want to check as well."

Re: A New World
- Spoiler:
- Sorry, was waiting to see if Deathstorm was going to post, I shouldn't have left you all hanging just for that.
I'm going to say that Piasa told you of Rufus's discovery (or Arcantos can talk to Rufus directly, seeing as you have animal speak).
Ch'aska is right- she doesn't know much about machinery. But it must be somewhere, and considering that you're at the top of the pyramid it must be below you- meaning there must be a way to get there, to have built and to maintain the mechanism.
You scan the room again- only part of the calendar is visible, but most of it is concealed beneath the floor, only showing current and near dates and months, with alcoves for each segment of time (one of which has the locked stone box). There are the creepy murals. There is the skylight. There is the entrance you came in. And there is the gleaming white altar.
Re: A New World
Ch'aska stepped away from the machines. It didn't seem like she was getting anywhere trying to figure out if there was anything to trigger. But if it wasn't in the calender, or on the walls, then there was only one other place to look. She suppressed a shudder and approached the altar. She tried to focus all of her attention on the altar, especially trying to avoid looking at the walls.

Re: A New World
You continue to be amazed at how clean the Altar and the area around it is- considering the acts depicted on the walls.
This becomes even more pronounced as you get a close look at it- it's spotless really, flawless even, polished to a reflective sheen. You're glad it's not midday, otherwise the overhead sun would likely make it blinding to look at.
And so is a rectangular section of the floor, off to the side of the altar- the same shape and size as the altar's base. It's smoother, and slightly lower than the rest of the floor- as though worn away somehow through repeated use.

Re: A New World
"Okay, I might have found our entrance. Let's see if we can move this altar." Ch'aska positioned herself so that she would be pusing the altar onto the smooth patch on the floor, then started pushing.

Re: A New World
"The altar?" Arcantos says, half to himself at this revelation, after a while he nods and comes over to the Aplaca, saying. "That makes sense, only the priests will most likely approach the altar, so only they would know about it." He then moved next to Ch'aska and put his shoulder against the altar and pushed, putting his entire weight into it.

Re: A New World
Together you make rapid progress sliding the altar along the barely visible grooves in the floor. You can see the beginnings of a staircase in the opening beneath the altar- you've already managed to move it about a third of the way open
However, it is strangely warm to the touch. Hot even. And getting hotter. Is it shinier than it was? Perhaps glowing rather than merely reflecting light? Arcantos, pressing his shoulder against it in particular feels he'll end up with a nasty burn on his shoulder if he keeps pushing it with his full weight. (Each of you make an endurance check, stop pushing the altar, or whatever else you can think of to avoid being burned/minimize the damage.)

Re: A New World
Ch'aska stopped pushing for a moment, feeling the unnatural heat coming from the altar, instead focusing her energies on breaking any sort of enchantment long enough for them to push it aside without burning to a crisp.

Re: A New World
(Whew, that's quite a roll! Wasn't automatically a success, but I rolled poorly for the spell's strength)
Almost immediately the altar stops glowing and burning- though it still warm to the touch. As you push the altar the rest of the way, you reveal the descending staircase completely. Warm air rushes out from the exposed tunnel. As sunlight reaches down into the opening, a couple of crystals set into the wall halfway down begin to glow. As that light spreads down as far as you can see before the stair takes a turn, you can make out another set of crystals beginning to emit light as well.
Ch'aska and Arcantos are unharmed- although the altar seems to have managed to burn away a tiny bit of fur and loose scales. Not that there's any evidence of burned objects on the altar, which is as spotless as ever.

Re: A New World
Arcantos stepped back when the altar started getting really hot and seemed to start glowing. However, almost as soon as it did so, it stopped. Frowning, the dragon glanced sideways at his companion before putting his shoulder to the altar once more and pushed. The fact that this alpaca was this talented at magic was a little... alarming. Arcantos hoped that he would learn more runes and soon, because he would not allow someone to out perform him!
Once the stairs where open Arcantos looked at the others and drew his swords, saying. "I believe I should go down first, any arguments?"

Re: A New World
You all descend the staircase, which is lit by the crystals. After only a couple flights, you find yourself in a large chamber- also lit by the crystals, though not as brightly as the stairs.
What you can see at first glance:
You can see the rest of the calendar mechanism here, all of the days and months of the solar year that you couldn't see above (minus a few that are stuck between this ceiling and the floor above).
On the other side of the room, towards the center of the city, parts of the mechanism continue downwards along a continuing set of stairs.
There are two very heavy looking stone "X" 's that look to be winches, one attached to each part of the calendar. One arm of each "X" sinks into a groove in the floor- the two grooves extend the length of the room, and end in a little inset in the wall, each with an adjacent small lever.

Re: A New World
Arcantos looked curious and somewhat fascinated as he looked around at the mechanicems used for the calender, however when Ch'ask spoke up once more, he shook his head to clear his thoughts, saying. "We're here on a purpose, and the faster we accomplish this, the faster we can catch up with the captives." That said, Arcantos headed for the stairs once more.
