It was a dark and stormy night... but that was last night. Today is a bright and sunny early Autumn day, something quite uncommon for Port Pegasus, and the leaves are just beginning to turn for the season. Everypony is out socializing and having a good time, taking advantage of the nice weather scheduled, though that does not mean they are all outside. A good number of ponies, of all ages, are in the local pub, Juice and Gin, having just as good a time. Some ponies are drinking the alcohol served there, others are drinking apple juice or orange juice or some other fruit juice offered there, some colts drinking grape juice in the corner and pretending it's wine. A few of the ponies here, strangers and a strange lot, go by the names of Beams Brightly, Brass Wing, Crow Wing, Dancing River, Silver Lining, Sky Wolf, Stacked Deck, and Wanderlust.

((Mmm, not quite what I had in mind. I'll try and make it fit though.))

The young Earth Pony stumbled out of the nearby woods in a daze. Other ponies who looked on rushed away as quick as they could without attracting attention; she was covered in small cuts, and looked ready to bolt at the slightest thing. She felt their disapproval, their worry for their own safety; it pounded in her head like so many hammers! In her fright she dived under a nearby park bench.

After several minutes, once she was alone, she noticed a pair of saddle bags strapped to her for the first time. Twisting her head around, she compared the buckle to her own cutie mark; they matched. She concluded that it belonged to her; however, she resisted the urge to examine the contents for some clue of her identity. She was alone, she was sure, but somehow didn't feel as though she were safe. She crawled out, much calmer, and started looking around for someplace more suitable.

She settled on a bar in the town square called the Juice And Gin; it was not devoid of ponies, but none seemed threatening, and she hoped that if something happened they would detract attention from herself.

She silently sat at a booth. Looking to make sure nopony was watching, she started to empty the bags.

Almost immediately she found a sheet of paper with writing on it. The writing was messy, and there was an ominous red stain on it; but she eventually read:

"Your name is Dancing River! You're going to have some trouble remembering things for a while. Beware of ponies that already know your name! Sorry, that's all I can recall..." It trailed off here, as though the author had to rush away. She dug around a little more and found a Sharpie marker, testing the writing against her own; they didn't match. Clearly somepony else had written this note. But who? The dead pony in the woods? She shuddered at the memory; she wondered what she was to do about it. She was certain she would never be able to find him again; and the police would never believe her otherwise.

She continued digging around, looking for more hints to her identity...

Stacked Deck walked into the bar with a sly smile on his face. It brought back good memories of a time when he would've walked into a bar like this and left with almost everypony's bits. Ah, good times. Now, even though he'd surely be put back in jail if he tried, he still couldn't help but think of all the ways he could scam every pony he saw. Then he saw... her. His demeanor suddenly became much more serious. The mare looked strange to say the least. She was cut all over and rifling through some bag as though she didn't already know what was in it. That couldn't mean anything good. No, something was definitely wrong here, and Stacked Deck was going to find out what. "Poe, I think we got a situation here. Stay by the door and watch my back. I have no idea what this mare will do, but I think she might be dangerous."

Stacked Deck's face suddenly resumed a sly, happy demeanor as he casually walked up next to the battered mare. "Well hello miss. I couldn't help but notice you from across the room and I just have to say it looks like you've been through Tartarus. Anything wrong?"

"Oh, Miss River will be fine, won't you, dear?" a dull-coppery pony sitting at the bar says over-loud. Sitting on the floor at his sides are heavily stuffed and worn saddlebags, and a dusty coat with too many pockets hides a pair of wings. He also wears a hat, even though he's indoors.

"She's just very confused is all. Come, Miss River, have a Sirish Coffee with me and calm down. I'm not a stranger to waking up the next moring without a memory. At least, I think so... Anyway, it's good for the nerves." As he sits back to think. a whirring noise comes from his general direction until he idly kicks a bag. When he sees the growing look of concern on her face, he sighs. "Oh, don't worry about me, I just overheard you reading the note aloud."

Stacked Deck just smiles and shakes his head slowly. "Now, now. Let the lady speak for herself. You see, I'm very interested in what she has to say. After all, it's my business to investigate suspicious things," he says as he flashes his detective badge.

As River continued to take stock of her belongings, she felt q sudden sharp ache in her shoulder; and promptly a unicorn came up behind her with a smile. "Well hello miss. I couldn't help but notice you from across the room and I just have to say it looks like you've been through Tartarus. Anything wrong?"

She stared momentarily. Bits of thought flooded through her head; she somehow recognised they were not hers. She automatically started sorting them into relevant data. He was police officer, good? He thought she had stolen the bags!? Less good. He was a skilled magician (though she could not pinpoint the specialty.) Threat Level: Moderate to High. As she tried to reply, she was interrupted by another voice.

"She's just very confused is all. Come, Miss River, have a Sirish Coffee with me and calm down. I'm not a stranger to waking up the next moring without a memory. At least, I think so... Anyway, it's good for the nerves." She suddenly grew quite alarmed; he knew her name! Just like the mysterious note had said. "Oh, don't worry about me, I just overheard you reading the note aloud."

She worried anyways. She hadn't read aloud!

...had she? She didn't think so. Could this pony "read" her, the same way she was reading him? Or was something else occurring? Once again, she had come to some conclusions about him. She did not think he could read minds; somehow she had read aloud without meaning to. She decided he was a roboticist. And he knew her name! He was harder to get a grain, however. But, the note hadn't specified how someone knew her name.

The first unicorn spoke up again. "Now, now. Let the lady speak for herself. You see, I'm very interested in what she has to say. After all, it's my business to investigate suspicious things," he said as he flashed his detective badge. She had guessed correctly. Or was it a guess?

"...It's MY bag, I'm sure of it," she managed to say around her anxiousness, pointing to the buckle, and then shifting slightly to show her own matching cutie mark. She felt conflicted; emotionally, she didn't feel safe with these two stallions asking her questions or interacting at all; intellectually she knew neither of them (probably) were trying to actively hurt her. One of them would likely help her, if she could get him to believe her. Or lock her up somewhere if he didn't; she looked less than reputable, and even she was questioning her sanity now. "Please don't take it away," she asked with a slight hint of a whimper. She really just wanted to be left alone; but felt she wasn't going to get that today...

Sweet Celestia this girl is scared. The bag definitely matched her cutie mark, and it didn't seem to be an illusion. But still, this mare looked battered. He'd be remiss if he didn't try to help her. He laughed a bit on the inside. Thinking about the safety of others? Maybe he really had changed.

"Now look. I never said I thought the bag was stolen. I just saw that you looked quite battered, almost as if you'd been in quite a fight. I'm with the police. I'm not here to hurt, only to help, but I can't help if you don't tell me what's going on. I will warn you though, don't try to lie to me. I know a lie when I hear it."

"Now look. I never said I thought the bag was stolen," he was saying to her.

No, but you thought it, she remarked to herself, making certain this time that it didn't leave her mouth.

"I just saw that you looked quite battered, almost as if you'd been in quite a fight. I'm with the police. I'm not here to hurt, only to help, but I can't help if you don't tell me what's going on. I will warn you though, don't try to lie to me. I know a lie when I hear it."

She glanced back at the Pegasus. A mirror on the wall allowed her to notice another pony watching intently from behind. She guessed that he was with the detective. She had gathered a name by now; Stacked Deck?

She spoke in a whisper, afraid of someone else hearing; although she couldn't imagine who. "I woke up in the wilderness today. There was..." She choked. "There was a dead stallion out there! I ran away, I didn't..." she promptly broke down, and started to cry...

Stacked Deck steps back surprised, then composes himself. A body? Bad for the poor chap who died, but today just got a lot more for exciting for Stacked Deck. He thought of what he needed to do and began to act. A small spark flicks off his horn as he opens up the magical communication channel with Poe.

"Poe, come in. We have possible murder, maybe even a kidnapping. We need to get an investigation underway immediately. Phone in to station," Stacked Deck says. Then he turns back to the battered mare. "Alright, I know you're distressed, but I'm going to have to ask you to come with me back to the station. A local bar is no place to discuss murder. Right now I'm bringing you in as a potential victim. Evidence, if found, may change that. For now, please come with me."

The younger mare barely heard what Stacked Deck was saying until the end. "For now, please come with me."

She looked up. She could feel his concern under the show of profesionalism. Threat Level: Moderate to Low. She cursed herself for thinking it so automatically, almost like a machine. She started putting stuff back into the saddle bag.

"Oh-o-okay," she stammered out, getting wearily to her feet.

An earth pony sits on one side of the pub, unaware of the conversation going on, just looking at the mares around. It was a good day today for once, and he wanted to enjoy it with a lady. He spots a green crystal pony wearing glasses near the doorway, smiles to himself, and approaches her. When the pony is next to the mare, he gives her a quizzical look and asks "Hi, this might sound like a silly question, but do you have a twin sister?"

A gray pony was sitting in a booth, nursing a mug of warm apple cider with cinnamon, bored out of his mind, when he heard the exchange at the bar. His ears pricked up, and he smiled. "Just in time." he says quietly, successfully repressing a huge grin into a small smile. He puts a few bits on the table and waits for the detective and the scratched mare to leave, stowing his horseshoes in his saddlebags.

Beams Brightly gleefully trotted as she looked around the city of Port Pegasus. She had never thought it possible yet she now stood in the location of the Sheerclop Homes stories.  Looking to make the best of her vacation, she made a beeline for the nearest juice bar.  While she tended to limit her cider intake, Sheerclop Homes tended to frequent them when a case concluded so it seemed to be the perfect place to visit first.  Within her saddlebag was one of few first edition copies of A Stable in Scarlet.  While not as good as the later works, the author had autographed it, making it one of her most prized possessions.  As she walked into the bar, a friendly stallion walked up to her with a greeting, "Hi, this might sound like a silly question, but do you have a twin sister?" Giving him a warm smile she replied, "Only when I look in the mirror!" then busted out with a loud laugh that warbled in octave.

The earth pony gave a small laugh to accompany the large one. "Well, that must be one lucky mirror," he continues in his trotingham accent, "Because you must be the prettiest mare in all of Equestria."

Beams' translucent cheeks slightly blushed from the compliment. "Gosh, I always thought the princesses were prettier than I was.  Then again, since the Crystal Empire disappeared for 1000 years, I might be the same age they are.  And since I won my mirror at the Crystal Fair, it probably is lucky.  Do you have a lucky mirror Mr..?"

"Silver Lining," The blue earth pony responds. His mane was black apart from a streak of silver that ran through it. "And I can't say that I have, Ms..." He holds out his hoof, intending for the maid to place her hoof on top so he could give it a polite kiss...

"Anything for the pretty lady." With that, Silver leads Beams to the table he was previously sited at, and went to get drinks. He picked up two of whatever was cheaper between the two mentioned drinks, just for convenience sake. When he returns, he passes a drink to the mare and takes a seat for himself. "So, what's a pony like you doing all the way away from the Crystal Empire?"

"You didn't need to pay for mine but that was most gracious of you.  I'm here on vacation and I'm glad I...one moment, please."  Beams Brightly had seen something on her way in but it was just now registering to her mind. Tilting her glasses so she could focus her natural farsightedness to one of the tables across the room, she spotted what looked like none other than Sheerclop Homes.  Immediately overcome with uncontrolled glee, she immediately galloped over.  "WOHOHAHA!!!  Is this the one, only, and singular Sheerclop Homes???  I'm astounded, shocked, and amazed! And my name is Beams Brightly.  I've read all of the books, I have all of the books.  To see you here before me.  Wow."

"Thank you for cooperating, miss. I promise that we will figure this out for you. When we get back to the station, I want you to tell me everything you know. Detail matters."

River started to gain some confidence. She had mentally bumped Stacked Deck into the "benelovent" category; although, she still felt wary somehow.

"Uhmm... well, I s-suppose the first detail is I c-can't remember anything before waking - up," she stammered out slowly. From there, she was more confident; she could, somehow, recall the whole morning with near photographic precision (except she was still unsure of finding the dead unicorn again.) She described everything that had happened in the best detail she could, including the part about how the Pegasus had heard her reading silently (she thought), how her shoulder ached when he came up, and how she had read and organised his thoughts and the coppery Pegasus' (being unaware of anything out of the ordinary about any of it) and the contents of the note she had read (introducing herself conveinently at the same time.)

"And then I started following you, Detective Deck," she finished. At that moment, she felt a spasm in her tail; and a small voice told her she'd better move! She darted to the side just as a flower pot smashed into the sidewalk where she had been previously. She looked up. An older mare looked down from a window. "Sorry!" she called down.
