The Equestrian Multiverse Empty The Equestrian Multiverse

Post  TheCavalry Sat May 31, 2014 10:47 pm

So, let's talk Alternate Universes.

Of course, technically everything non-show related is an AU, but- excusing other generations- I think it's safe to say that worlds and games are typically presumed to exist in a continuity that roughly follows that of the show; a thousand years of Celestia as the benevolent princess after banishing Luna, Nightmare Moons return, etcetera.

One of the interesting things I haven't seen touched upon here however is an attempt to adapt popular AU's into game-ready settings.

Now, I'm aware of how much bias this is- I consider "What if" to be the best phrase ever. I have a fondness for fictions which touch on the idea of what might have been. The current arc of the comic has introduced an Equestria mirror world, which I think provides a very different possible game experience; the show has the Equestria girl universe, which might be adaptable.

I was thinking of trying to assemble background and rules for an Equestrian Multiverse, and this thread is basically a way to gauge interest. Would this be a project anyone would be interested in seeing or contributing too? Or are there any worlds you'd be particularly interested in seeing?

Well considering my game runs in a particular Alternate Universe, and a character of mine uses Multiverse jumping as his primary excuse for fitting into games, you can consider me greatly interested in this. I'd be happy to contribute my own ideas on the Equestrian (and other) multiverse, as well as my home universe.

Count me in, too. A lot of my ideas for campaigns are based in different universe (see the Ghostbusters campaign.) Of course a lot of them are garbage but that's besides the point

Huzzah! Interest!
...what do you mean this means I have to work?
(Still experimenting with avatars, so don't be surprised if it changes. Be less surprised if it involves Equestria-3 or the CSA)

The flavour and setting blindness is one of my favourite aspects of this system. I'm sure it probably possible to tool up a multiverse hopper using re-flavoured skills; Crazy Contraption for a universal tunnelling device, Fracture the Fourth Wall for information from 'other' universes, etc. That said, there might be room for some abilities or destinies that play with the traveller theme; only thing I can think off immediately though is a Bioshock Infinite-style quantum tear, or a destiny to basically make the Doctor.

You're competing with Equestria Girls, I wouldn't worry about quality.
Ghostbuster Ponies sounds interesting, and I'd definitely like hearing any particular worlds or rules you (or anyone else here) would like to see; I'm putting together a short list of the different 'canon' multiverse we know of from the series, so getting a rough idea of stuff available might be good.

As for non-pony a multiverse burn the blasphemer!... yes, it's something to do. As I say, I love multiverse fiction, particularly stories which involve crossovers. The reason I want to start with Equestria is so we have a 'standard' universe to start deviating from, before more-or-less inventing rules on how to create a custom Steampunk world for Living Legends.

Though speaking of worlds...

Post  A1C Bronymous Sun Jun 01, 2014 6:49 pm

I didn't mean non-pony multiverse in that there was a lack of pony. Let me explain:
Equestria 1.5- Crossoverse:

As for applying this to a game: It has a lot of potential on a million different fronts. You could run games in this that have nothing to do with ponies, but ponies could somehow show up and it would be fine, because its fact that they do exist in this universe. And of course vice versa, you could throw the Doctor, the Daedra, or hell Johnny Bravo at your Pony group, and as long as you have a reason, it's fine. The one caveat to remember about this is that Earth the Human World, and Equestria, are not in two different dimensions or universes. Just two different Planets.

Phoenix the multiverse jumper was in fact inspired (read: basically ripped off) from a fanfic called The Sweetie Chronicles, wherein Sweetie Belle is hurled across the Multiverse to different universes and timelines. It was a great story, so naturally I tried to include it. All I really ended up doing was including Phoenix in it, but it now serves a purpose within the game system to let me play him in most settings (he's been in 4 so far, only one of them not pony). He doesn't have anything on his character sheet (nor do most jumpers, I suspect) because the jumping is just a means to get him in the game, and doesn't need to exist within the game after that. However, if the game were to be ABOUT crossing universes, then e definitely would need to see some custom jumper talents. I imagine their abilities would include things like teleporting and phase stepping, flavored as leaving the timeline briefly and reappearing.

Now here's a part of the forum that hasn't gotten much love in a while.

I'll probably contribute shortened primers for earlier parts of the franchise when I have time. Reserving universe numbers 100, 150, 200, 300, 350, & 000

So, I think we can say this Preamble has successfully judged there to be sufficient interest, eh? I'll try write up a sample for an Equestria as a template, and we can see about putting it together more thoroughly.

Zamuel... I really should have said that, shouldn't I? The ones I've thrown on the chart are just me spit balling any ideas I could for worlds; if anyone is looking at this and thinking they'd like to contribute rules or setting details for the Steampunk Equestria please, feel free to! If you want to create your own, do that as well. Everything on the list is just a sample to pitch some ideas and what might need to be involved, and I'm not going to scrap all your hard work because I wanted a certain Equestria for myself.

(Except Equestria-3. In case I haven't made it clear yet, I love the Mirrorverse concept.)

Heck, on the "don't own it" thing... I'm hoping to add some Fanfiction verses to it, for people who want to play FO:E, or the Optimalverse, or whatever. I just think it might be polite to ask permission first, which is why the Luna- and Celestiaverses are the only ones there; RDD gave permission to cannibalise the setting and series Bible he created.

I don't think we should worry too hard about ownership in this sense, at least not for borrowing from fanfiction. Paying homage to a good story is usually fine. Besides, If I had to publish my setting, I'd owe SO MUCH MONEY to SO MANY PEOPLE.

Something I just thought of, and I think might be helpful, is my Multiverse map. I don't have an illustration, because infinite multiverses are hard to put on paper, but it's simple enough to conceive of.
Headcanon backstory- Not necessary, but explanative:
Basically, in my mind the Map works like this. In the beginning, there was one single timeline, lasting for all of, say, less than a second. The First split of the timeline represented the biggest split in the universe- Male vs Female. So, from the beginning there have always been two mirrored universes, and essentially all they are are the Rule 63 genderswapped universes. Then, mirroring each other, each of them splits and fractures infintiely into all the other timelines and universes, but each split in one gendered timeline is mirrored in the other, so for every time a guy says yes or no and creates a new timeline, so too does his female counterpart.

The way I play with this in my setting is that travel between the universes on one side of the gender divide is near impossible, but still relatively simple compared to breaching the gender gap and invading the opposite timelines.

So then: progress! Of a sort. Kind of.

Zamuel, you used the word I was trying to think of and couldn't: primer. I finally set aside time to start doing a first draft template of a world-

YES, IT WAS EQUESTRIA-3, I'M PREDICTABLE, LET'S MOVE ON-

-and I think it might be useful to ask you guys what sort of things you think should be included in descriptions of each 'verse. As far as I see it, this list should be a mix of inspiration and rules. As fun as Equestria-Prime is to play in, I imagine it could be fun to play with different toys and paint.

Bad metaphor aside, what I'm saying is, I think each universe described should provide the background knowledge for a particular universe, at least enough so that everyone is at the same starting point as they are going into a pony RPG in the 'normal' universe.
Eg: the Lunaverse description would summarise the major differences and background of Equestria under Luna, important NPCs from the fic, and suggestions in games that might work there (more antagonists, slower levelling up)

Then, of course, including additional or alternate rules for the setting as appropriate
Eg: rules for playing a more scientific society in a steampunk setting, or how radiation works in FO:E

Makes sense, but usually specific rules like that are made populous by the DM. Even if a setting template were to exist, I'd imagine only the least imaginative of game runners wouldn't alter it to better fit them. Adding or changing mechanics, for example- only the bravest or most creative DMs are willing to experiment with stuff that might turn out breaking the game, breaking itself, or generally just being too much of a hassle to remember.

Case in point: Myself. I wanted to add a layer of realism to Sun Sets, and use Hardcore Mode (borrowed from New Vegas) mechanics. Adding status effect like hungry/starving, tired/exhausting, thirsty/dehydrated, and resulting penalties and similar effects. It worked well in theory, but I lost track of doing it rather quickly. Another one I pioneered was an achievement system, where you unlock achievements and earn points a-la Xbox, and then could trade those points in for prizes. Between updates to the system rendering prizes obsolete, and again losing track, it also sort of dried up.

Setting rules that only affect flavoring, however, are much easier to implement and hold onto, and so they would be more viable for use in the setting templates. And setting backstory is almost assured to change- either in detail, or in scope. Either way, it'd be prudent to simply offer cosmetic guidelines as setting rules, and maybe some script or backstory prompts for those who can't write it up on their own, instead of fully fleshing out setting and timeline bibles that may or may not be adhered to.

I've got a bit of an idea for an AU.

Equestria #1984: Elements of Conformity

In this universe, the ideals of Harmony are perverted by the governing body (probably a tyrannized Celestia) to transform Equestria into an Orwellian totalitarian regime. The PCs in a typical campaign of this would choose either an Element of Harmony, reflavored as an Element of Conformity, or an Element of Chaos, reflavored as an Element of Revolution, depending on their Lawful/chaotic alignment.

Elements of Conformity:

Surveillance (Honesty) "If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear"
Opiate (Kindness) "Now just calm down and don't think about it and you'll be fine."
Morale (Laughter) "Everything is perfect! How can you think otherwise?"
Provision (Generosity) "They deserve it more than you need it."
Nationalism (Loyalty) "My princess, right or wrong!"
Power (Magic) "Community is power. If we burn tonight, we burn together."

Elements of Revolution

Privacy (Lies) "Everypony has their secrets, whether they admit it or not."
Magic: This pony can become completely undetectable by any means for the next 15 minutes. While in this state, they can interact with the world, but cannot communicate with any pony through means other than leaving notes and markings for them to find.
Fury (Cruelty) "You call me extremist, but if I didn't scream, nopony would hear me."
Magic: During a (non single boss fight) combat scene, this pony can use a magic point to instantly remove one of the combatants from battle completely and permanently with the caveat that they cannot "pull their punch" on this enemy and leave them alive.
Cynicism (Bitterness) "You may be content to walk in your dreams, but I see reality."
Magic: This pony naturally resists mind-altering substances and Lotus-eater machines and may expend a magic point to free up to 6 other ponies from such effects.
Resourcefulness (Greed) "Stealing, pragmatic use of assets, to-may-to to-mah-to."
Magic: This pony can use magic to "steal" an ally's (willing or unwilling) cutie mark skill, adding their bonus to their own a and leaving that ally's skill at 5 for 15 minutes.
Rebellion (Treachery) "Question everything, even your own thoughts."
Magic: This character can, at will, sense the doubt's other ponies have in their most firmly held beliefs and, with a magic point, force them to think about nothing but those doubts for 15 minutes.
Individuality (Loneliness) "Invictus."
Magic: When completely without alies, this pony can spend a magic point to make the next three skill checks automatic spectacular sucesses.

Thoughts?

Some of that seems to be playing on setting backstory that isn't there (Lotus-eater?) and the one about instakilling an enemy breaks system rules, if not setting rules. But some of the Chaos elements have interesting effects, albeit a bit overpowered.

The Lotus Eater Machine (Warning:Link leads to TVTropes.) is a concept in fiction where someone is trapped in a "Paradise" inside their own mind by an outside force for whatever reason in-universe to paraphrase from the article.

Altered mechanics basically depends on the mechanic.  In a few of my campaigns I use a different set of skills.  That said, some mechanics fall by the wayside so it takes adjusting and experimentation.  Did my first attempt at one of these.  Ask questions if you think it's missing something or could be clearer:

Oh, ok nevermind.

Speaking of playing off backstory, what's the source material for 150? Another show, gen1 or something? Anyway, I like nonexistant magic, and I've been waiting for a legitimate slice of life campaign for a while, so sounds pretty good. And you'd need to define the parameters of "Modern" vs "Fantasy", especially when it referring to something as technologically ambiguous as MLP. Seems like every episode they add some new kind of modern tech, despite still lacking dishwashers and telephones.

Good questions.

-My Little Pony Tales was a cartoon.  The second one in the franchise (leading to some erroneously calling it G2) but it was still within the G1 toyline and general body proportions.
-It was the franchise's first version of a static set of protagonists as opposed to random rotating casts like the previous show.  The protagonists themselves were school age but a campaign can easily work by making them older.
-While all seven protagonists were female, this is one of the few parts of the franchise where male ponies were actively a part of the entire show.  Three of the guys were part of the secondary cast and were about as recurring as the CMC are for G4.
-The quirk is that magic exists but there's less or the bigger magic hovers on the outskirts.  I mentioned passive luck since one of the 7 protagonists had it.  However, she was also clumsy and not especially bright so it generally wasn't overpowered.
-Manehattan shows that rotary telephones exist but you have a good point.  The franchise as a whole has a rather hybrid mix of genres.  Tales style of modern is like...suburbs.  It was structured somewhat similarly to an early 90s sitcom or after school show.  However, the "magic is on the outskirts" is reflected by having a few medieval style towers here and there.  Essentially, MLP as a franchise is a fantasy with modern elements.  Tales is a modern show with occasional fantasy elements.
-Tales is guilty of a number of bipedal stances and front hooves with marshmallow consistency.  I originally wasn't going to mention it since a lot of fanart uses sticky hooves and back leg standing but it's probably needed for people like me who do err on the side of quadrupedal motion.

A "best" list is difficult to gauge since the show feels like the era and people have differing tastes. A lot of early 90s cartoons had jerky characters, one of the boys is a "tough guy with a sensitive side" that some people read as abusive (ignoring the fact that he's like, 10 or 11 years old and incredibly insecure), and overall weird quirks like occasional hoofhands.  Though I guess I could narrow things down to An Apple for Starlight (introduces most of the recurring cast, has a more overt adventure, arguably a better introduction than the actual pilot episode) and Up, Up and Away (one of the characters who's displayed a fascination with the unknown winds up encountering it).  There's a few other episodes that I think are good but not in a vacuum.  If someone doesn't utterly hate the show, I advocate just marathoning it since the entire thing is only as long as G4 Season 3 and it actually does have a set continuum.

Ok, G2. Well I watched Sabersparks' video, and got the impression that G2 was almost overly girly- the actual incarnation of what haters think G4 supposedly is. Not in a bad way, but the themes were almost exclusively boyfriends, shopping, makeovers, etc. Obviously I never watched it so I might be wrong.

But then, if its just the suburban low-magic setting, then the themes could be anything you want I suppose. So no real issue, beyond I very much prefer the style of G4.

Thing is, it's a bunch of preteen girls so things like boys come up in some episodes but it's not the entire show. There's three problems essentially. A lot of the more cliche episodes are earlier before the show hits a decent stride so people see those and form those opinions before seeing the stronger parts. Even this is mixed since while the pilot, Slumber Party, is literally about a slumber party, it also introduces ghosts as canon (something that doesn't show up in the rest of the franchise). Second, people tend to purposely pass around what they view as the worst episodes so lower opinions are heavily spread around without seeing the whole picture. Finally, the show was designed for the long game. Despite being an episodic show for syndication, it had multiple small character arcs that really need to be watched in order and in entirety. It's sorta all or nothing. However, the show had 10 minute episodes so it really didn't have the breathing room for the things it was attempting. I'd argue that G4 is a vastly better show but Tales/G1.5 attempted to play with a few different concepts that benefited later generations.

As far as themes, I'm trying to write these in a way that any GM can pull from. "Suburban low-magic setting" is probably the most concise description for this.

@Bonymous

Yeah, I'm crappy at balancing and rules wrangling, but with someone competent at the head, I think the concept could work.

@Zamuel

I would love to play in a universe like that. I've always been a fan of characterization-heavy growing-up type games as long as there was a twist to make it interesting, and ponies would work well as that twist.

Something else I just remembered relayed to the topic. When it comes to jumping between parallel universes, which of these premises is more appealing?

A) You arrive in a new universe, and given the correct circumstances may come into contact with this verses version of yourself.

B) When you arrive in a new universe, your consciousness inhabits and overwrites the present version of yourself- you take their form and their place, but still know you as you from another universe.

C) Upon arriving, you completely overwrite the other you, replacing them.

As said before, my ideas on the multiverse thing come from the Sweetie Chronicles fanfic, which makes use of two of these options. Combining with my Gender divide theory, it would work as such:

Whenever you jump to another universe on the same side of the Gender divide, if you exist already in that universe, then option B happens, and you take over your alternate self. If you don't already exist, then you just arrive as yourself (this can be due to extreme differences in cause and effect, or a difference of time line.).
When you manage to bridge the Gender gap, though, the differences here are so extreme that you and your alternate self cannot be considered the same entity, so you arrive as yourself, and can end up meeting your opposite gendered self.

Since the thing is more of a guide than hard-fast rules, it might be best to mention all three options. They all have great story potential, from meeting yourself to Quantum-Leaping, and it might be a good idea to leave it to the discretion of the GM, based on the kind of story they want to tell.

Personally I'm a major fan of option A... With the subet of there maybe not being a version of you running around in the new universe... Or the two of yous are different enough to not even realize being doubles if that is an option. Too much is it that multiverse travel it's easy to run into the doubles and it really comes off as being way to easy to figure out that they're doubles...

The Equestrian Multiverse Empty Re: The Equestrian Multiverse

Minor thread necromancy, but...whatever.

Just want to let you guys know I haven't dropped this. Actually, I was waiting to get my hands on the last chapter of the Reflections arc, in case it through out some stuff about Equestria-3... and I finally managed to get to my local store and pick up my reserved comics.

So... I have the complete Reflections arc- meaning I can write a rough guide to E3- and I'm working through the Lunaverse, so I should be able to work on that one real soon. I'll try and finish my E3 guide and submit it here as a trial template, to see if the format is workable.
