Psychoneights

Post  Elacular on Sat Feb 22, 2014 6:49 pm

Deep in Southern Buffalo Country in Equestria, on a small, dirt hick-road that seemed to lead to nowhere, a large cart was being dragged by a massive male buffalo and a rather small unicorn stallion. Inside the cart was a group of foals: an older Pegasus filly with no cutie mark, an earth filly with puffy pigtails, a larger earth colt, a unicorn colt curled into a ball and wearing a tin-foil hat, a male griffon cub snoring against the glass and a unicorn filly asleep on his shoulder. The Buffalo looked back into the cart and gave an immensely forced grin. "Alright, uh, foally-o's, we'll be arriving at Whinnying Rock pretty soon. So feel free to wake up and look out the window at-oh! Actually, don't look out the window. Windows are bad. Don't do it."

The griffon sat up and let out a huge yawn that degraded into a caw. "Thank Celestia. Could this trip be any boringer or stupider? Featherbow, why don't you guys have a train or something yet."

The Buffalo laughed nervously, the paper flower that adorned his horn shaking. "Garret, honey, that's something we grown ups like to call 'abuse of corporate finances'."

The unicorn next to Garret rolled her eyes. "Worst. Secret service. Ever." She then turned to the other inhabitants of the cart while the Griffon poked his head out the window to hock loogies at anything they passed. "So. Lots of new kids on our route this time around. Garret's not going to help you, and you certainly aren't going to get anything out of Amilie, so tell me. What's your deals?"

The older pegasus lets out a long yawn as she turns and lays opposite the way she was, now on the seat and away from the 'bad' window. "Don't have a 'deal'. And boring-er isn't a word; it's 'more boring'."

The trip had been quiet and boring but it gave Marsh a chance to reflect.  Her life had been turned upside down but she wanted to make the best of it.  With the unicorn speaking to the group, she didn't want to be rude and not respond.  Though she wasn't sure of the question.  "Deals?  I...I don't know what you mean.  Um, I made fresh marshmallows if anypony wants one."

At the mention of fresh marshmallows, the griffon shoved the unicorn out of the way, held out his claw and demanded "Gimme!"

Even with her face smooshed against the seat in front of her, the unicorn rolled her eyes. "Of course you have a deal. You're going to psycho-camp for ponies with brain powers. Just because you're not curled up like the other new kid-" She used her horn to make an arrow to point at the unicorn in the foil hat, "or hiding like Amilie doesn't mean you're normal."

There was an audible din from the left side of the cart. The unicorn pointed her arrow towards the window instead. "Like that. Would any normal camp have things like that happening outside it?"

The pegasus just says "Whatever," and lets out a deep sigh, hoping that she's not going to only older kid at the camp. The fact that the returning campers are younger than her isn't a promising sign, though.

A little taken aback by the griffin, Marsh started handing out marshmallows.  "I just didn't know what you meant.  I have syon...'psionic healing' I think they called it.  Should be useful if I learn to control it."  She pointed to her medical cross cutie mark that was similar to many nurse ponies.

The unicorn shook her head, making the arrow she made light up. "No, seriously! Look out the window! It's kind of awesome!"

"Um, no foals, don't look out the window! Nothing important is happening in any way at all." The buffalo said very quickly.

Garret clambered on top of his unicorn friend and laughed through a beakfull of marshmallow. "Dude, this is freaking awesome! Pointer, look at this! Hahaha! Kick his plot, Jewel!"

From outside the left of the cart, a blast of fire was visible and the sounds of muffled swearing were audible. Anyone looking out that side of the cart would see a teenage-ish dragon with bright red scales and grey coveralls chasing a unicorn with a porn-stache around the road, swinging a rake at him. On the other side of the cart were a number of signs with odd slogans written on them:

Magic healing for your condition!

Make the voices go away!

It'll all get better with magic.

Cloud continues to be uninterested in the commotion just on the other side of her window, but glances somewhat worriedly at the signs across from her. Just what kind of a camp has she been sent to? Sure, her parents were...worried about her, and she's one of a rare few who haven't discovered their purpose in life by now, but she's not sick or anything.

The shorter unicorn pulling the cart watched the goings on with disdain. "One of these days," he mumbled under his breath. One of these days Quiet Keep would grant him permission; or, at least, turn a blind eye long enough to set up an "unfortunate accident". "Let 'em look, Featherbow; they need to know where the rest of the world stands. There's nothing to be done about it 'cept what Jewel's doing, anyways."

The earth colt had looked through the window as well, and saw the slogans written. Unlike the others, he soon sat down with a snort, saying. “Magic will make the condition go away? Pah. Why should we wish to relinquish the psychic powers gifted to us? Its not like we are monsters or anything, our source of power is just different from the traditional magic.”

Feather shook his head back and forth very quickly. "I know you think that the foals can handle tough love, Pyro, but this is a very difficult and influential part of their lives. Trauma at this age can cause all sorts of psychoses and manias. I'm just trying to keep them safe from-"

Before he could finish his sentence, the unicorn booted the dragon off his chest and ran off, grabbing his signs as he did. "I'll be back tomorrow! The colts and fillies need to know the truth!"

Jewel gasped for air for a moment, then shook her fist at him. "Yeah, you better run y' ruddy buck-plot! Yer mother was a Changeling!"

Featherbow closed his eyes and groaned. "Trying to keep them safe from things like that. They don't need to grow up around that, you know? Even if they are different." He let out a hefty sigh as they reached a large set of gates. "We're here anyway."

Standing in the parking lot were a brightly smiling male zebra with a scarf around his neck and a light teal female unicorn with thick glasses. "Alright," the latter said, "Everypony off the cart!"

Meanwhile, the zebra sidled up to Pyro, whispering in his ear. "Um, Closure was generally the one to do the big speech at the beginning, but he's...you know. Do you think you could..."

Pyro grinned from ear to ear. "Say no more. Just get them organised, will you?"

Several moments later, he looked over the campers new and old. Between the time of evening, a new crackling campfire, and a carefully built platform on which he now stood, his coat took on an eerie sparkle. He looked like an apparition from Tartarus as he began his version of The Speech.

"Six hundred miles of synaptic fibre. Five and a half ounces of cranial fluid. 15,000 grams of complex neural matter. A three pound pile of dreams..." He paused, a sort of gleam coming to his eye, making him seem almost equine. It didn't last long.

"Encased in a shell three times harder than concrete, and firmly attached to the finest precision machine in the world. Your mind! It is the final battleground - and the ultimate weapon! You, all of you, are in one way or another Psychic; and you have come here to Whinnying Rocks to master this strange new power you have discovered. If you succeed, you will change worlds, level cities, warp reality to your whim! The rest of you," He paused again. The new campers were staring, wide eyed; good!

"The rest of you will be sent away, quivering little balls of paranoid anxiety, to spend the rest of your lives in padded cells and straight jackets. But I'm not letting that happen, bucket! I am Sergeant Pyro, and I am here to turn you into Psychoneights. You will address me only as 'Sergeant'; do not call me Pyro, do not call me sir! Save it for the top brass. You will do exactly as instructed by myself and the other counselors at all times! DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME!? We have not yet had a return on my watch, and I will not allow you to tarnish that record!" He leaned forward towards them as he barked at them. He came back to standing straight and gave them a moment to react...

Marsh was caught off guard by this. She didn't know what to expect from the camp so Pyro's speech was very intimidating. However, she promised her parents she would do her best to learn how to control her abilities. She sat quietly and respectfully for whatever would be said next.

Despite the relative silence and the imposing soldier at the front, Cloud raises a hoof in question and calmly says, "Yeah, what if we don't wanna do any of that though."

The Segreant glanced over at the raised hoof.

"And that, fillies, is why we do not have a train. If you didn't want to come, the time to decide that was before you left."

Paladin was quiet for a few moments after the speech was over, giving time for Cloud to raise his hoof and ask his question, as well as the sergeant's answer... once it was done however, Paladin sat on his rump, allowing him to lift his front hooves and bring them together in a slow, sarcastic clap.

The other children there all stared with their mouths agape save for a few who seemed to be in their own heads. From a little further away, the sound of a female dragon cackling could be clearly heard. For once, Garret was completely silent. Pointer shook her head briefly and made a few false starts before actually speaking. "Well that's...different."

Garret sniffed very loudly and dramatically and threw himself on the floor in a terribly overacted tantrum. "I want Closure back! Not this prick! Where's Closure?"

A quiet voice emanating from seemingly nowhere spoke out: "Really? I think it's the best speech I've seen in years."

The three other counselors stood a bit off to the side. Featherbow's jaw was almost on the floor, the unicorn had one hoof to the bridge of her nose, and the zebra was clearly trying very very hard not to laugh.

Pyro's face was a stone mask; years of military service had made him much better at concealing and controling his emotions. So even though he too thought the reaction was pretty funny, it didn't show.

Then he heard a voice that clearly didn't belong to the crowd. He had been warned about her; he elected to address her right now, without trying to do much more about it.

"The voice you do not see belongs to Amilie. She is a pegasus filly, she doesn't like to be seen, and she can turn invisible. So think twice when you decide to get mischievous; she could be anywhere. Aaanywhere! And to Amilie I say this; don't think it's going to work on me or the other counselors, because it won't. Just like everyone else," he paused for dramatic effect as a grin played onto his face that would've made the Poison Joaker proud.

"You have to sleep sometime."

Persuasion:
Dissuading the campers, and especially Amilie, from getting up to no good.

Result: 1d20 [3] + Persuasion [10] + FK Intimidate [5] = 18

Of course, with a roll like that I'm not too optimistic.

Cloud hadn't intended to get into trouble anyway, so the sergeant's warning didn't mean much to her. But invisibility? That's...actually kinda cool. She makes a mental note to try and talk to the filly, or at least find out who taught her how to do

There is a rustle in the trees that seems to be approaching the platform and campfire.  At its nearest, a figure drops down into a empty spot in the midst of camp  On closer inspection, he's a young drake with white scales and wearing a tubesock hat and a silk green buttoned shirt.

"Honorable senseis.  Fellow campers.   I am Dart, and I have arrived."
He levitates a scroll* in the direction of the camp counselors.

*:

A letter of introduction from the Red Eye monks, and note that Dartaxian has permission to attend the camp.

Pyro's horn lit up as he telekinetically snatched the scroll, bringing it up to reading distance. "Dartaxian of the Red Eye Monks, hm? Well. Try and make it onto the wagon next time, huh? We like to know who we're dealing with a little further in advance than that. Now!" he said, tossing the scroll aside. "If there aren't anymore questions, then you can go settle your bunk arrangements. Tomorrow's going to be very busy for you."

The unicorn counselor took a deep breath and held it for a moment, removing her glasses with her magic. She then let out a deep groan and turned around. "Right then. Pyro, you handle the new kid. If you need me I'll be in the cabin chugging bleach."

With that, she began to walk away. Featherbow moved to follow her. "Um, Magimind, do you want to talk about-"

"No!"

Meanwhile, the zebra had himself propped up on a wall and was desperately holding back laughter. "I-I'm sorry, Pyro. You need to h-handle this. I-I can't right now, I'm gonna die." With that, he ran away as well, clearly barely able to hold himself together.

With all the other counselors occupied, a large, teenage red dragon marched onto the pedestal, pausing only momentarily to ruffle Dart's had with her claw. "Right then. My name's Jewel, and I keep this place clean. That's Jewel. Not Miss Jewel, not Ma'am, and definitely not 'ruddy celesdamn janitor'. The only reason Whinnying Rock runs as well as it does is because I've actually got my crap together. But enough about me. Let's talk about arrowheads, shall we?" At this last statement, she licked her lips and clicked her claws together.

Pyro sighed and face hoofed as the other counselors threw him to the wolves. "Ponies used to be stronger than that," he muttered.

Upon Jewel's entrance Pyro raised an eyebrow. "I do believe, Jewel, that we discussed the official policy on arrowheads already?"

Perception and OOC:
The discussion being that Pyro will bring her arrowheads, but will deny the fact if brought up and would Jewel please not rat him out.
