Seen a good film lately? Want to discuss the latest blockbuster? Lambast the critical flops?

Recommendations, warnings, riffing and chatter; a general purpose thread for any cinematic discussions.

So to kick things off...am I the only one who walked out of the latest X-Men film thinking "That was good, but not great"?

I was legitimately confused by it. Like, most people were confused by Inception, and I had that handled, but XMen confused me. They brought up the first 3 movies just so they could officially write them off as never having happened. They never explained how the Professor was alive, even after the bullshit hidden scene at the end of 3. Why could Shadowcat send people's minds back in time, that's not her power. What did they even accomplish in each location if every time they just rewound and were never there to begin with? Why was Mystique being such a bitch to BOTH Charles and Eric? Why didn't they bring Quicksilver along to do LITERALLY EVERYTHING for them (read: Giant Eagles). WHAT EVEN HAPPENED AT THE END WITH YOUNG WOLVERINE AND MYSTIQUE/STRIKER AND WHY DOES HE HAVE HIS CLAWS IF THAT WASN'T HIM AND WAT.

Lousy with plot holes, but overall I thought the movie was pretty entertaining, and since I don't follow X-Men at all outside of the movies, overall I was satisfied.

The "b.s. hidden scene" at the end of 3 makes a bit more sense if you remember a scene early in that film. When Xavier was teaching a class about the ethical ramifications of using mutant abilities in certain ways, one example he came up with was transferring the healthy mind of a crippled or dying person into the body of a brain-dead and comatose person. Taken in conjunction with the stinger, this implies that in order to cheat death, the Professor did exactly that. Of course, that doesn't explain why he looks exactly the same as he had before and still needs a wheelchair.

Shadowcat's new ability appears to be a case of "New Powers As The Plot Demands". They probably could have invented an entirely new mutant to do that instead, but the filmmakers seem to prefer using preexisting ones. (Plus in the original comic book arc for Days of Future Past, it was Kitty who was sent back in time instead of Wolverine, so that might have something to do with why they picked her as opposed to someone else.)

They weren't actually trying to accomplish anything in each location. They were just trying to stay alive until they could meet up with their fellow X-Men and hopefully come up with a plan.

Mystique was upset with Charles because she felt that he had a history of trying to control her without taking her own needs and desires into account. Mystique was upset with Erik because Erik tried to kill her.

They didn't bring Quicksilver along because a) he was still living with his mother and presumably couldn't just drop everything to go on an international trip (the Pentagon escapade took a day, tops), and/or b) he only helped them out for the opportunity to pull the heist of a lifetime, and he had no motivation to continue helping after Erik was free.

I don't believe we've seen any evidence one way or the other of whether Wolverine still has his adamantium claws in this new timeline or not. As for young Logan with Mystique/Stryker... Well, what do you think sequels are for?

Hay this thread is convenient. Last Night I went and saw A Million Ways to Die in the West, and Maleficent.

Both were tremendously good. A Million ways to die had its fair share of ridiculous sex jokes, sheep penis, Liam Neeson, Liam Neeson's ass, gory deaths, vague racism, drug use, Doc Brown, and Django. Fun for the whole family.

Maleficent was just really cool. If you hold true to the original story of Sleeping Beauty, you probably won't enjoy all the things that it changes- Maleficent caring for Aurora as she grew up, trying to un curse her, trying to find true love for her to break the curse, ad ultimately breaking the curse with her own kiss (The true love of a Mother to Child, mind you). ALso she doesn't turn int a dragon. She turns someone else into a dragon for her. But besides that, shes a cool as shit demon girl, and there is enough characterization in the movie that I now consider her my top favorite Disney character.

Maleficent is a bit of an odd movie for me to comment on; overall, I liked it... but I didn't love it, and I really wanted to.

It did a lot of stuff very right. Jolie was magnificent, particular following the loss of her wings. Before that, I didn't think she had the same innocence and heroic qualities that young-Mal did... but she played villainous very well. Watching the transformation that goes on behind her eyes when she learns how to walk with the staff was amazing; her arrival at the castle and casting of the curse was every bit as awesome as I was hoping it would be.

Her relationship with Aurora was also fun to watch; there was an appreciative laugh in the cinema when Aurora met her 'fairy godmother', and, again, the look on Jolie's face throughout the sequence really sold her emotion, the gathering realisation that the baby was, for all intents and purposes, hers. I also liked True Loves kiss. I predicted it, but that doesn't mean it wasn't good. I like seeing the move away from True Love=Romance, and not everyone in the cinema expected it. I heard some kids in the row behind me cooing with delight when the Prince went for it, and could practically feel them deflating with shock.

The spinning needle room is one of the most awesome set designs I've seen in years; I LOVED the PARRALLEL between aurora and Mel making their way through the forests. The overall 'Celtic' feeling to it in the actors accents and the fairy myths was cool.

O...what bothered me? Well, for one think, the constant narrative; it really took me out of the movie. There were some narrative holes I couldn't quite fill, like the three fairies and the moors, and... Well. I didn't see many trailers, and didn't realise it's rating until I was in the cinema; I think I expected something darker, exploring what it meant to be a fairy tale villain.

Still, fun enough film.
