Cirque du Celeste
- Spoiler:
It was a little before noon when the circus came to town.
Well, maybe that was overselling it just a little. After all, what arrived in the field a little south of the town wasn't a circus; it was a train of wagons and carts being pulled by ponies. At the end of the train, in a cart protected from the elements by a thick cover, were the poles and rigging that the roustabouts would assemble into the open circus tent.
The field was a good spot, almost naturally circular, with good grass for any ponies who might fancy that sort of thing. For any who didn't, the village of Trotsworth was less than an hour away.
It was perfect for a circus, as it should be. The more established members of the circus might have remembered playing here just over a year ago.
Three Ring shrugged her way out of her wagons harness, and stepped out in front of it. It was the largest -one of the perks of being the boss- and stuck to the side was a hopelessly faded and out of date poster. She cast an eye over the rest of the wagons as they pulled up, the stallions dragging the cart with the would-be circus tent to the centre.
- Spoiler:
- Obviously, since this is a travelling circus, your characters don't have homes you can return to at the end of the night. Instead, a lucky few of you have access to wagons, alá Trixie; small, somewhat rickety, but at least affording some degree of privacy. Unfortunately there aren't enough to go around. Accommodation tends to be tight, with two ponies squeezed to a wagon (a situation I'll let you guys decide amongst yourselves). Fortunately, for those unable -or unwilling- to be squeezed together like sardines, when the cirque camps at night some ponies take the circus canvas and create makeshift tents to lie under the stars.

Flare took a moment to stretch. Being of of the smallest members of the troop, she often ended up crammed in with two others. But she didn't have much time to waste, there was a lot of work that needed to be done. She headed over to the place where they were going to set up the tent.

Re: Cirque du Celeste
Newton stumbled out of his wagon, mask resting comfortably on his back. Well, honestly, it wasn't really HIS wagon. He and Barkov the Magnificent, the other magician, shared the tent just as they often shared an act. Barkov was a nice enough diamond dog, but still a diamond dog, which meant that the wagon often smelled pretty badly after a long journey on the road.
So Newton decided he would take this chance to get out of the wagon, stretch his legs, get a breath of fresh air, and watch the roustabouts work. He liked to think he got along fine with them - outside of his counterpart, CAVENDISH, being extravagant, he didn't really demand anything from the workers and was kind enough to stay out of their way when they needed to work. He also did his best to treat them like ponies. Or dragons, in the case of one of them.
Of course, to Newton, treating them like ponies involves a lot of stammering and hiding behind a mask. So Celestia knows what the roustabouts think of HIM.
Regardless, he took in the fresh (near) Trotsworth air. He quite enjoyed playing here last year, and the years prior.

Re: Cirque du Celeste
A gentle poke in Tale Spinner's side made him roll over. 'Five more minutes..." He mumbled between a snore and scratching his belly. A second poke followed. "Breakfast can wait..."
A flurry of stabs assaulted his side. Tale Spinner jumped up, or at least as high up as he could from a lying position, and turned his head to glance at the perpetrator. A most adorable little furball stood next to him, flailing her arms from side to side and pointed off to the ray of sunlight pouring into the corner that had been Tale Spinner's sleeping sanctuary a few moments ago.
"We're here?" Tale Spinner rubbed the sleep from his eyes. "Alright Zazi, hop on."
The squirrel ran up Tale Spinner's leg and up his back before making herself cosy inside the bushy mane. Making sure her tail was twirled around his neck so she wouldn't fall off, Tale Spinner set out into the new day to write the next chapter in the story that was his life.

Re: Cirque du Celeste
Flashpoint stirred as the caravan pulled to a stop. Being a traditional Pegasus, he was slightly claustrophobic when it came to his sleeping arrangements, and so chose to sleep on top of one of the wagons, rather than in it, and even on rainy nights he would set up a canopy rather than sleep inside. Luckily, this meant plenty of room for his gear, and he didn't have to share a room with whoever else. Who was it anyway? he thought as he threw off his blanket, and peeked down through one of the wagon windows. Oh yeah, the snake guy... uh, snake guy. Flashpoint didn't necessarily mind the Snake Charmer, just thought he was a bit odd in a few ways. Trusted the stallion and his pet enough to keep watch over Flashpoint's valuables, at least.
Flashpoint disembarked the wagon and took to the air to get a general sense of where they were setting up shop. It seemed vaguely familiar, probably was there once or twice before.
FPs been with the circus at least 5 years, probably 7. Knowing things.

Re: Cirque du Celeste
As the wagon rolled to a gentle but firm stop, Barkov rolled his shoulders a little as he waited for Newton to get whatever items he needed before leaving the wagon to do whatever he needed to do. Unlike many of the other members of the circus Barkov didn't mind the somewhat claustrophobic conditions of the wagons; Having been born and raised in a network of tunnels, the diamond dog found it very easy to sleep in the wooden transports.
Once he was alone, Barkov donned his green hooded vest and made his way towards the door himself. Taking a deep breath, he stepped into the outside world and forced himself not to stare up into the open sky. Even after six or so months, walking under the open sky felt weird to him. All that vast emptiness just looming above your head... Shaking his head to get his mind off of things, Barkov looked around to see if there was anything he could do to help with the setting up before he went into town.
While performing his act with Cavendish was alright every few towns they performed in due to a fabricated rivalry between their alter egos, Barkov found that having one of the local performers challenging him to a 'magical duel' in which both sides attempted to out perform the other with their tricks and acts worked much better; It got the crowd on the edge of their seat to see one of their own performing, it allowed for some side bets as to who would win the challenge and the local talent got some free publicity and a cut of the take from the bets. It didn't really matter who won the 'duel' itself, since the audience tended to love it all the same.
Spying their little dragoness roustabout walking around, Barkov smiled warmly as he walked over to her, bending his knees a little so that he was a little easier for her to meet the eyes off before asking "Do you need any help Flare?"

Viper slithered toward Tan, who was practising his harmonica skills. They were fairly recent additions to the circus, and fortunately was given a wagon with somepony who didn't even sleep inside, so as long as they didn't touch his stuff they had it good. Viper climbs Tan's leg and rests on his back. "Come on Tan, we've got things to do."

Risky'd been awake for a while, just thinking, before the wagon train had stopped. Noticing the third of their cabin is still asleep, he silently puts on his vest and loops a coil of rope over his neck before strolling out of the carriage after the dragonling. He pauses and takes a moment to enjoy the open sky before starting a series of stretches.
3 to a cart gets a little cramped, but as it's only on the treks between stops it works out alright; the earth pony opting to improvise shelter and give himself and the others a bit more room.
After finishing his stretches he trots over to the dragonling and diamond dog as he sees them, saying with a smile, "Another beautiful afternoon, yeh? Sky don' get much more open than that." He looks admiringly up at the sky.

Re: Cirque du Celeste
Three Ring cast an eye over her little ponies. It was what her father used to call the circus crew, and a habit he had passed on to her. Most of the workers were older than her, but as far as she was concerned, she had much more experience, making the epithet justified.
The stallions pulling the tent wagon unhitched themselves, lowering it. Inside, beneath the tarp, were an array of poles, ropes and canvasses, lying in a haphazard mess. Actually driving the stakes into the ground and running up the rigging was the easy -if physically demanding- part. Untangling them was the tricky part.
Three Ring stepped onto a small, fold-out platform and whistled for attention.
"Okay everypony, listen up! Those of you who pulled the train, dust off your hooves and get some rest. We,"- she held up her own dirty horseshoe in proof- "earned a break. The rest of you lazy good-for-nothing's, make yourselves useful and get the tents and signs up. Don't make me come looking for answers as to why it isn't done yet."
She hopped off the platform, and walked towards one of the wagons.
"Spinner, have you got a moment?"

Re: Cirque du Celeste
Tale Spinner turned his head at the sound of a pony whistling for attention. He watched a mare shouting out orders to various ponies before hopping off her little platform and vanish into the crowd. He felt a soft scratching in his ear followed by a single squeak.
"Honestly Zazi, how can you not know Three Ring? She's the nice boss pony who runs this whole shebang." He folded one of his ears down as to gentle tap the squirrel. "You better be nice to her 'cause she's the reason we have a roof over our heads, a moderately comfy sleeping space and food in our bellies."
The squirrel rolled her eyes at the lecture but Tale Spinner didn't notice. His attention had been captured by the aforementioned mare who was now standing in front of him.
"Spinner, have you got a moment?"
"For you dear, I've got all the moments in the world." Tale Spinner smiled.

"Err... yes- I mean, that is, of course, er... Right away, uh... Three Ring!" said Newton, in a mighty hurry.
Of course, in his hurry he forgot to get out any tools needed to assist in the setting of a tent and so was left with his telekinesis - which, while certainly impressive, wasn't all that helpful if not given clear direction. Which he was too shy to ask for.
Finding a yellow text color that doesn't hurt my eyes is hard. Also, rolled a 2, which is totally in character for Newton.

Turning towards Risky for a moment, Barkov couldn't help but wonder if the stallion was intentionally poking fun at him for the fact that for the first few months of being apart of the circus he had been quite skittish while under the open sky... It was just so big... and empty... and how did these ponies not worry about falling up into it?!
Resisting the urge to look up as that strange feeling of not having a roof over his head started to play at the back of his mind, instead Barkov's attention was drawn to the voice of the owner of the circus. He always paid attention to her when she was speaking... and sometimes when she wasn't. She was the boss after all...
Shaking his head a little to get his mind back to the matter at hand, once he had his marching orders to help set the tents up he bucked himself up to do it. While he wasn't the physically strongest of beings that were apart of the circus, he wasn't that poor off in the strength department. Plus the fact that he had hands and thumbs gave him a lot more freedom when it came to holding stuff then many ponies.

Re: Cirque du Celeste
"Great. Since I only need the one, I can put the rest to work. You mind taking a trip?" She nodded in the direction of the village.
"If you could drum up some good PR, that'd be great. Take Newton with you; it's his turn on the rota."
She looks back at the circus group, prancing slightly.
"You know what? Take Flare too. Kids love a dragon, and she can hand out fliers to the grown-ups."
---
A dirt-brown pegasus with a taut rope cutie mark glares at Risky. She's one of the hands who jumped on the circus wagon in recent months, serving a stint as a roustabout.
"Who cares where it is," she grunts, shifting through the back of the wagon. "Long as they pay better'n those last ponies did. If I wanted to make nothin' I'd have stayed on the rock farm."
She took a piece of rope, manipulating it into a knot.
"Hey, not-ponies. Hold this, will ya?"
---
Those who weren't working on the tents and signs were sitting outside a wagon which was filling the air with aromas to make their mouths water. Any annoyance that Gourmet- griffon, resident cook- was the only resident besides Three Ring to get a wagon to himself usually disappeared by lunch time.
Even if, from the smell, the chef was cooking a stew made of grass, alfalfa and dirt. Again.
Even he couldn't make that completely appetising for the third day running, but at least he hadn't started adding meat again. That didn't 'to go over well with most of the crew.

Turning his head towards the mare that required his aid for a moment, Barkov lifted his paw to give her a wave to show that he heard her and was on his way before turning back to Risky and Flare to simply say "Good luck and have fun both of you." before starting to rush over to help out where needed.
Offering the dirt-brown (Such a lovely color) pegasus a smile, he happily took hold of the rope where requested and making sure he had a firm grip on it as he simply said "Don't worry, I got it Ms." before letting her do whatever she needed to do with it.

He watched Three Rings turn around and trot off. Knowing what to do, Tale Spinner himself walked over to his wagon, grabbed a couple of saddlebags and stuffed them full with flyers. He swung them on his back, made his way back to the where all the action was taking place and looked around. It didn't take him that long to locate both Flare and Newton, what with one being a baby dragon and the other carrying a mask around. He whistled at them.
"Flare, Newton, we've got a job to do! Come on, we're going to Trotsworth."
With that said, Tale Spinner positioned himself at the edge of the encampment, patiently waiting for the baby dragon and the magician to join him.

- Risky's already near the pegasus with the rope, so I'll assume you're just telling that to just Flare.
Also, I'm guessing at how these tents work. Risky would know pretty well by this point, as I've planned him to have been with the cirque for ~3 years.
Mechanics for Risky tying knots? Just rp-success for now?

"Oh! Um, well..." began Newton.
Unable to finish the sentence, and unable to excuse himself from his "job" putting up the tents (which he hadn't really done any decent work on), Newton paused for a few seconds before levitating his mask in front of his face.
"You shall have my aid, oh Spinner of Tales!" said THE AMAZING CAVENDISH, trotting off after Tale Spinner.

Flare was a bit surprised that she was the one being asked to pass out flyers to the public, since it wasn't like she was a performer or anyone who could draw a crowd ( like Newton) Still, her job was basically to do whatever needed to be done, and if the boss need a cute baby dragon passing out flyer, then that was what she was going to do. She hurried after the two, cursing her short legs.

Yeah, I would say just RP. If you want to make rolls, I certainly won't stop you, but, aside from a mouthy mare, there isn't any pressure on you guys to get things in order.
Yet.
That said, and a general note for the future. If you do ever want to... augment stuff with rolls, or roll for RPing purposes, go ahead.
Tan looks at the snake, just as Flashpoint started knocking.
"Did your things involve circus tents too," he asks his companion.
---
Three Ring smiles to herself, more than a little amused by Cavendishs enthusiasm. She glances over the ponies working, ignoring her stomach. She could afford to just tighten the belt a little more...
She is making her way back to her own wagon, when she notices the Pegasus banging on his wagon mates door.
"Flash, when I said get to work, I didn't just mean the rousties." She glanced at the door, raising an eyebrow. "Is there a problem?"
---
"My hero," the Pegasus said to Barkov. She took the other end of the rope, and looped it around a small spike. "'Kay, now slide your end up 'till it reaches this bit. Forget about this-" she brandished the length of rope in between. "That knot? 'S ajustable. That'll secure the line to the spike, and leave line free for whatever else needs tying."
Despite herself, her eyes lit up a little when talking about the rope. They darkened when Risky spoke.
"Yeah well, 'pends on the community," she said darkly. "Most pegasus I know wouldn't know a rock if you hit 'em with it."
She paused, scrutinising him. "Hey, aren't you the knife toss guy? Ricky Cuts?"
---
Trotsworth gives the impression of being a large village, but it's actually a lot smaller than most of the ones the circus plays too. Most of it's size comes from the fact that, almost as far out as the encampment itself, most of the land is owned by sugar farmers. The town square itself doesn't have many shops or boutiques; just a town hall, a few stalls for the farmers to hawk their wares, and a single general store.
It's the sort of place someone goes through to get somewhere nicer, somewhere where everypony knows everypony else.[/color]

Would we expect to do a show later today after the tents are set-up? Just a quick run-through in case of changes to the line-up?
Also, apostrophes. Apostrophes everywhere.

"...Yeah, anyway." Flashpoint turned away from where Tan was playing with his snake. "I'm going to go get breakfast. I hear we're eating mud stew again. Smells like it anyway." He takes off into the air again, flapping his way over the new circus grounds to the meal wagon, and got in line for food.

Barkov noticed the brightness of the Pegasus mares eyes as she discussed the rope that they were working on. Happy to see her in such a good mood, the diamond dog did as was requested off him, sliding his end down to the spike while ignoring the rope in between. Even if she was possibly being sarcastic about it, that 'hero' comment had made him feel good about himself.
However, as Risky appeared and joined the conversation, his presence and his questioning of the mares techniques had clearly darkened her mood again. Since the earth pony had asked what the mares name was he decided to leave that question unasked, instead he attempted to brighten her mood again by asking "You seem to know quite a bit about knots and rope. By any chance have you considered trying out an escape act? Since you already have some knowledge of how to tie and untie ropes you have a pretty solid foundation to start from if you wished to give it a try..."

As Tale Spinner was walking down the road to Trotsworth along with Flare and Newton, he began thinking of how to best handle the task given to them.
"Okay team, we need a lot of flanks filling seats so let's do our best."
He looked at the other two for a quick moment to consider their collective assets.
"I think it's best if we work as follows: first we attract a general crowd. Then Newton whips up something impressive to wow them. During and after which, Flare and I will distribute flyers, put up posters and convince any doubters to still come to the circus. Flare, use your natural adorableness to win them over." Tale Spinner winked at her before looking Newton in theface mask.
"I trust that you, as one of our resident magicians, have something up your sleeve? Nothing to fancy, just something flashy enough to leave an impression and leave them wanting for more."
The first couple of Trotsworth entered the view. Tale Spinner took a deep breath and mentally prepared himself.
"Anyone got any ideas they want to share? Else it's game time, lad and lassie."
