Eight accepted the seat on the blanket. "You know, not all stories end tragically. The Tale of the Six Gods, for instance."

"Well, the Six Gods weren't always the Six Gods. They were just an adventuring party, in my homeland. They had a Warrior, a Mage, a Rogue, a Bard, an Assassin, and of course, a Healer. They were just six beings, brought together for the purpose of exploring a dungeon for treasure by the corrupt kingdom. They had no connections to each other, but were bound by their task. But as they traveled through the dungeon, they discovered something they didn't expect...

The hut had come together nicely and looked like a fairly safe and comfortable grass-and-stick hovel. It clearly wouldn't last long, but neither would the night. Dagnir leaned back and admired her work with a smile. As Eight began to speak of gods, however, her ear swiveled to catch the conversation and she moved over to the blanket, lying down stomach first upon it to listen. She rested her chin in her front paws and closed her eyes, though her face still changed with the words.

"None of those. Well, they might have been there, the specifics of this first test are unfortunately lost to time. The important thing was that, while inspecting the treasure to see what was valuable, and what wasn't, the Mage discovered an document. Several documents, in fact that were enchanted to resist any form of destruction. These documents told them that the current kingdom, going back hundreds of years, was actually ruled by an usurper, who had attempted to kill the true heir, only for the heir to have been spirited away and hidden in safety. Because the corrupt king would likely crush any attempts to rebel, or reveal the fraud the evidence was hidden away until a group of heroes brave enough and noble enough to find said heir ( or their children) and restore the true monarchy. And as the group figured, said noble heroes would likely be greatly rewarded for their aid, much more than they would have been paid by the Kingdom in restoring this treasure..."

Dagnir's eyes flicked open and she looked up at Eight. "But...if someone was even able to usurp the throne, doesn't that mean that they're more fit to rule than the current heir? I-" It seemed to occur to her that she was interrupting and she bowed her head. "Sorry, go on."

Eight smiled. "DOn't be sorry, that's an interesting question. But in any case, the original usurper had been dead for some time when the Six discovered the existence of the papers. In any case, it is true that orignally, the Six's motives were not pure. They sought gain, and royal titles, not justice. So they hid the documents among themselves, replacing it with another claiming that there were other dungeons around containing even greater treasures. The King told them to find these dungeons, as they expected, which gave them the excuse to travel the land in a group, under the cover of treasure hunting, and secretly find the heir.

"Thus began the True adventures of The Six. But while I could go on for hours detailing their deeds and growth, i'm guessing you would prefer a shorter version, yes?

Re: The Curse and the Treasure - The Quest

Post  mjh6 on Thu Oct 30, 2014 1:33 pm

"Well, the shorter version goes that the group traveled the land, search of the lost heir. They only had the vaguest of ideas where they might find him or her, so it took several years of traveling, slaying monsters for bounties, trying to fob off the king's men asking after the nonexistant treasures, and trying to avoid killing each other. And as they traveled, they grew closer to both  each other, and the people they protected. The more time the spent traveling among them, the more they grew to sympathize with the hardships and burdens placed on them by a king unconcerned with anything except money and luxuries. But as long as the people believed that he was the  true king, they would follow him regardless. Their quest became not just for themselves, but for their country as well."

At this line, Eight stopped and blushed slightly. I know a lot of this is just summarizing what they are thinking and doing, but she's right; the full tales aren't meant to be told out in the damp.

But eventually, they found their lost heir. A humble shepherdess. One who knew nothing of the duties of ruling, but had true royal blood in her veins. And more importantly, she had the true desire to help the people, and act as a ruler should.

Nadir stomped back to the make-shift camp, the fish still wriggling in his hand. He didn't seem to pay attention as Eight spoke, instead gathering what little sticks and leaves and grass there was on the river shore.
Seeming not to pay attention wasn't the same as not paying attention of course; he was just used to being ignored. He was listening rather intently, in fact, at first because it sounded like something to file away for later, and then...

...Well. It was an odd thought. But he'd like to hear the full tale sometime. It sounded... romantic.

Even so...
"Rule is more than intent," he said slowly. "You need to know how to do it. Like magic."
He held a palm toward the small pile of sticks. There was a glow beneath his glove, before flames sprouted from the leaves. He took a twig, sticking the fish, then planting it in the ground before the camp fire.

"...Then what happened?"

Re: The Curse and the Treasure - The Quest

"Well, then they set about starting a rebellion. As you probably could guess, a rebellion didn't just spring up. They had to start spreading the word of the usurpation, and the true ruler, gathering support, and supplies. All the while, they kept the true heir hidden and safe, always having at least one of them guarding her.

Finally, the time for the declaration came upon them. The Six discussed long and hard about how to go about it, but eventually decided to put together a loud spectacle right in front of the castle, too large for the guards to cover up, and ensure that as many of the people in the capitol heard exactly what the false king had done and was doing.

They were arguing over who should say what, when the True heir herself entered the room, and said that she wanted to say at least part of the speech. After all, she was the one they were going to try to put on the throne, and she should being taking responsibility. Additionally, it would should that they weren't lying about the existence of a true heir.

When the Warrior asked about her safety, she just smiled, and said 'AS long as you Six are with me, I know I will be safe.'"

"Well if the six of them were trying to guard her, she'd have to be there anyway. And if someone wants to kill her, they'll take a shot at her then, or wait until she's on the throne and take a shot at her anyway. I'm sure it didn't really matter."

"Well, the Six argued the same points. Was the risk worth it? Would their plan to induce the overthrow work without something other than claims and documents that a crowd couldn't read? They argued long nto the night about what would be best for the country, and the heir. And when the day came, the Six approached the castle seemingly alone.

The spectacle the six created was amazing to see. The Mage drew everyone to the area with the explosions and light shows, and then the Six of them fought the whole King's guard alone, while keeping them away from the civilians. Finally, they drew out the "King" himself, with only a few guards left standing. That is when they brought out their Queen.

It was a calculated risk, but they ultimately decided that she was right, they could protect her, especially with most of the guard defeated. And confronted by the true heir, wearing the ring that could only be worn by the rightful ruler, the usuper realized he was beaten, and surrendered. The Six accepted his surrender, hoping that that would be the end"

"But life isn't that simple. The new queen still needed protection, and even though she was the true queen, she still had a lot to learn about how to rule. Not everyone wanted a young woman to rule them, and the rebelled in their own way. The Six had originally assumed the aftermath of the rebellion would involve enjoying their reward money and noble status, not running around, trying to keep the country stable. To make things worse, the people began to whisper about the six of them, telling about their original mercenary desires, and claiming they planned to either overthrow the new queen, or use her as a puppet ruler. And these rumors were the ones that built the new rebellions up. And so both the Six and the queen realized that, for the good of the country, the Six must leave the country, and not return until things were more stable, if they every were."

Eight rolled her eyes. "Yes, and then there was a blight that killed all the crops, and a plague that killed everyone in the country, and a volcano opened up and destroyed the whole continent.

While the Six were powerful and important, they were not the only people guarding the Queen. They had to have them, what with the SIx being pulled all over the country to deal with rebellions and other matters. The Six left the Queen in good enough hands; ones that they trusted to do their jobs but were not associated with them heavily enough to cause objections from the populace. They wouldn't have left otherwise. Just because you aren't a pessimist doesn't mean you are stupid."

Eight gave Horizon a significant look. "You want to tell one of your stories that reflects you worldview, it would be nice if you waited your turn."

"Anyway, the Six traveled across the lands uncertain what to do now. They had succeeded on what had been their goal for years and year, and there was nothing more they could do for them. The three of them ended up in a tavern, far away from their home, where the discussed going their separate ways, when the bartender mentioned a problem they had with a dragon raiding the nearby mine, looking for precious objects And the Six decided to go defeat this dragon for them.

After a long and hard battle, the beast was dead, and they had full access to the dragon's horde, collected over it's long lifetime. More than enough money for them to just buy their own country. But as they celebrated their defeat, and looked over the horde, they knew what must be done.

They had power, and to sit by while people were in trouble just wouldn't be right. And the Six agreed to travel every land, where ever there were beings in danger, and protect and serve them.

For years and years, they protected us all. Their fame grew, but they refused reward, always continuing onwards. As long as their were those in need of protection, they would be there And their power to protect grew so much, that when they died they ascended beyond the mortal lands, become Gods. And even now, they protect and serve us, guiding and empowering the weak and injured. And those of us who worship them follow in their footsteps."
