Character Concepts

Post  TheCavalry on Tue Dec 02, 2014 5:40 pm

So, I considered posting this in the character sheets thread... but I don't have sheets for these. At the moment, they are both just ideas for characters who might be interesting to play.

...which is why I started a topic; I can't be the only one like this, am I? Is there any characters you guys have been thinking about or considering? Guys, girls, ponies or others who have. Ade you think "That might be fun to try sometime,", rather than being a character specifically designed for a campaign?

Right now, there are two ideas I've been considering, one pony, one not.

The pony... Picture a pointed Darren Brown, I suppose; an Earth Pony who's special talent let's them be a mentalist, with a combat build based towards Dominating enemies or providing buffs to their team, and an ability-set of a diplomancer.
(I totally know I'd want to reflavor the stare as hypnosis or something).

The non-pony is less developed in terms of abilities, but a lot more on other stuff. Basically? The female follower of the goddess of Love.
Wait, don't go!
So, I've seen comments about how guys (which I am) play female characters, and then use said characters to indulge in hedonism and stuff. This character is intended, squarely, as the opposite of that, because the Goddess isn't of romantic love, alá Cupid, or the hyper-sexualised stuff that gets associated with Aphrodite. This one is closer, I suppose, to the Judeo-Christian kind of "Love thy Neighbor" type of thing, which probably means the character is built more towards being "the healer" than a fighter.

Anyone else who wants to share characters who are waiting for the right game to come along?

A mechanical character...Who's actually mechanical in origin. I think I've seen like one on these forums, maybe? Probably brawn or knowledge-focused (though trained in Mechanics if only for the 'I know machines. I am one.' thing.) Personality would vary depending on if they're designed for heavy-lifting or more of a walking database, though. Inability to understand organics optional, but possibly an amusing way to play out the inevitable 1 on a diplomancy check. ("It's all my fauuuult!" "Everyone dies. Even if you had mended his injuries, you could not change that fact. Your efforts would ultimately have been in vain." "...Was that supposed to help?" "It didn't?")

It's been a while since I did a crazy character. I would just love to give Multiple Personality disorder a try, as disruptive as it is.

I'm picturing a zebra with three different names:

Zane: Overall the most competent and coherent of the three, but also the most dangerous: Zane is angry, violent, and generally not nice. But, he is also the easiest to reason with, being more capable of coherent thought. Zane occasionally uses rhymes for scare value, but doesn't feel a compulsion to do so.

Zack: Less competent then Zane, but also the least coherent. Zane is unstable, impulsive, and prone to random acts of randomness. Zack always speaks in rhyme, and sometimes even bursts into song.

Zip: Less dangerous than Zane and less random than Zack, Zip does come with the drawback of being mostly mute (Zip has only spoken in order to say "I'm Zip", and only rarely.) Zip is timid and shy, but also quite stubborn, which makes him difficult to work with.

I actually have an old LL character with multiple personalities, which were assigned to different GE "races" for the purpose of the old Changeling's trickery. No longer works with this new system, but if you stick mostly to Flavor and RP for the split personalities, and stay away from mechanics, then it should be perfectly viable to make a character like that.

From the top of my head:

Steel Wall; Earth Pony Villain who despises magic. Armed with a mechanical harness with claws. Master of All Trades, ~10 in every stat, with additional stat boosting talents (e.g. Stealth Mode, Dispel Spell). A companion if I can afford it, make it a mechanical mannequin with some sort of setting-friendly variant of a television as a head. No idea what the combat build would be. It'd need to be both tanky and damaging, with elements of control...

Unnamed Buffalo Weathercrafter. Based somewhat on Dota's Earthshaker, except with the sky. Probably carries a totem with him. High Brawn, possibly high Knowledge and/or Horse-Sense as well. All weathercrafting talents, obviously. AoE Combat Build...

Unnamed Zebra Musician. Joins the party for new song material (if joining an existing party, he would have had written songs based of his dreams which were very similar to adventures the party had, leading to a possible plot point should the DM wish to explore that). High Horse-Sense. Social-based talents. In combat flavour, he is a coward and hides (becoming exposed when bloodied, only really hit by an enemy when knocked out (which, well, knocks him out immediately)). However, spirits of his ancestors fight on his behalf, using a summoner build. Sadly for him I've since made a (slightly) musician character and a zebra character, so I don't have that much of a desire to make him now...

Really cool to see some of the ideas here!

@TheCavalety: Neat, it's pretty cool when people will try to play with expected ideas, make things turn out differently, that's certainly an approach to love I don't think has seen much.
@Caden2112: Speaking as someone who loves construct characters I really like the idea of this, especially with the whole "organic's feelings going over his head" type stuff.
@Bronymous: This sounds really cool, kinda reminds me of Killer 7, the idea of the separate personalities having different bodies.

- Heartache [Heuristics Enabled Abstract Realm Thinker – Anti Changeling Histoid Entity]

The ACHE project was part of series of studies made in an attempt to create an artificial construct that could combat the changeling threat. ACHE in particular was noted for a project which attempted to create constructs derived from recovered samples of changeling tissue

Heartache is the result of one of the experiments which had a higher changeling tissue integration coefficient than usual, to the point that at a glance Heartache looked like it was a living creature, at least on the surface, which has the general appearance of a black pony as a standard, with sections of hair broken up by the appearance of patches of chitin. Heartache's mechanical, nigh skeletal components are hidden beneath a sheath of mutable material based on changeling tissue. The idea behind Heartache was that, like some other anti-changeling constructs, it could be used to help detect and neutralize changeling infestations in groups. With Heartache's shapeshifting, it could also potentially infiltrate changeling hives, as well as utilize unique combat protocols that took advantage of it's mutability.

While Heartache managed to reach creation, it was not without much worry and argument over how to implement it. There was worry that it's living components gave it too much capacity for emotion, giving the potential to disobey commands, and that with it's shape shifting capacity there was a risk it could escape and basically serve as another sort of changeling threat. The result of this was numerous safeguards that were put into place in an attempt to make Heartache feel safer to use, include gaining a user's permission before engaging in disguise protocols. Heartache itself does have emotions, though it tends to not express them in a fear of being rejected, or worse, destroyed. As a result, it tends to act and speak robotically most of the time when in it's default form, though time will tell if it will eventually face enough stress to crack and show its heart.

Heartache would probably fit best in a sci-fi type setting—I even originally imagined him to be a shape-shifting colony of nanomachines that took a pony form as a default. Though with enough fudging I'd like to think he could fit in a general pony story. He'd likely use changeling's trickery, have tracking/sensing capabilities, and his combat talents would be flavored around him shifting his body around into different shapes. Like, shifting a horn from his head into as a magic cannon, or growing wings with a bladed edge for melee combat.

- Squeaky Clean, The Janitor

Squeaky ain't much. Squeaky ain't exactly remarkable either. In fact, the most remarkable thing about him is probably how unremarkable he usually is. He's spent his entire life feeling like he's in the background, with nothing he does really being that important. Which has led to him managing to get away with things here and there since people rarely seem to regard him so much.

I kinda thought on the idea of Squeaky after thinking about Scruffy the Janitor from Futurama too much. He's have the Untraceable ability, and maybe a few other evidence-removing abilities that could be tied to his cleaning skills, and likely have him have an emphasis on stealth, with maybe some high persuasion to convince people he's not worth noticing when he is seen. I like the idea that even in an official adventuring type group he might be seen as just another background character who just happens to be there constantly, though I'm not so sure that would actually work in a player dynamic.
