Wanderlust: Beyond the Looking Glass (PbP)

Post  Crystalite on Sun Feb 01, 2015 12:30 am

Okay, so there's a number of different ideas coming together here.

First off: For those who do not remember Who You Gonna Call or My Little Warehouse, there's two links for you; but, the short version is that they are considered part of the same continuity (Even though neither one got too far) and they both dealt with Equestria's paranormal threats. This campaign is also part of that continuity, occurring after both of them, and is also dealing with just such a threat, what MLW would call an Artifact, which brings me to the next idea.

Now. I have never seen any of the Equestria Girls stuff, and have no intention of doing so: however, I have come to understand that the basis is around a mirror that permits travel between the "pony" world and a/the "human" world. It occurred to me: Who says that's the only one it goes to? This campaign is based largely on the premise that does, in fact, lead to a nigh-infinite number of alternate worlds, extra dimensions, and sections of the timeline. The player characters are a team of Equestria's finest, tasked with exploring and cataloguing these different worlds. Or, perhaps, getting lost in them. We'll see. I am, of course, open to suggestions here: although I as a GM have standards of appropriateness and interest, literally anything is possible.

Rules notes: in my ongoing attempt to stress test the shiny new Wanderlust system, we will of course be using said system: however, we shall be starting at Level 4, allowing for higher-level abilities, and of course the Destinies.

Recruitment notes: I'm shooting for about 4 or 5 players here. Anyone can submit a character; however, I am giving preference to the previous players of the Warehouse and Ghostbucker campaigns (The ones I mentioned earlier) should they want to play this. Since it's the same continuity, it's even likely enough to play as characters from those campaigns (Trust me, nothing is unexplainable here) or something more bizarre.

Feel free to ask questions or make suggestions regarding plots, world-detail, or other miscellanea!

MMMMmmmmmm.... Multiverse settings. I have one, and it's different from this one, and we'd all prefer if it was our own.

Eh well, regardless. I'm signing up the twins, obviously aged up from Ghostbuckers. However, before I put together a Wanderlust version, I'd like to know what the Canon ending to that game might have been, to see how their personalities might have shifted.

Hmm. I don't know what 7 of 9 had planned for the campaign in general, although I assume we bucked many ghosts, and perhaps stopped some world-eating monster at some point. I'm going to leave that as a Noodle Incident; spoken of, but mot elaborated. My headcanon says that it's been a pretty long time (30-40 years) so that party is significantly older, but there's ways around that, if it's even a problem in the first place. I assume there was development of character as well, but again I don't know exactly what you planned for the twins so that bit's up to you, really.

On another note: it has reached my attention that the Mirror in question only has one end-point... But, there's more than one mirror, and other mirrors could handily lead to other places.

Oh, I was expecting a 5-10 year difference.... For development I was expecting very basic growing up, abandoning their G.O.A.T. attitudes, and for a very dramatic turn, there was always the chance of one of them dying, which would have seriously affected the survivor's psychological makeup and development.

I'd be tempted to play off of that with the dead one still hanging around as a ghost, or even just a figment of the other's imagination, but I feel like the "voice in my head" deal is a bit played out. Plus I don't know how well I want to play a 40-60 year old jackal- I'm certain dog years still mostly apply.

The comics actually use other mirrors that go to other worlds (or at least one mirror that went to other worlds). I believe Celestia uses them to discover those other universes and take the technology back to her universe, something like that...

And for a spin, they don't have to all be mirrors. They could just be any random object that holds definitive importance in a different universe, and by using that object in the right way you would be transported there. I would imagine such objects, produced through an intersecting of the two worlds, would be discoverable and collected in Canterlot.

Or, Stargate. Or, Phoenixes. Or, Discord. Oooooooor.... There are any number of ways to make multiverse travel happen.

Ooh, that gives me an idea! If I'm reading this right, almost anything can be done for a character, right? I'll be right back...

Okay, my life went off the deep end last night, and I'm still sorting things out, but I have been waiting for a supernatural/x-files style game to show up for about a month. I don't have time to read the previous threads right now (I will get to them eventually), but is this that sort of campaign? Is it investigatory, 'we have no idea what we're dealing with' or more 'bring it on, multiverse!' style?

@ Bronymous: I would probably just stick to mirrors or variations thereof, but otherwise all of those thoughts sound reasonable. If we're to visit Pheonix Land, I'll need to hear more about it (Or maybe just hand you the reins on that mirror...)

@ MJ: Yes, but I would like to try and keep it pony-themed, at least within the party, so please keep that in mind?

@ Sunbeam: I, personally, am shooting for somewhere in between, favoring the first type (since that's what the first two were like); however, as a GM I always try and cater to the players, so keep me informed as to what you want.

I wasn't in either of those other games, but if there's a space after veterans, I'd love to sign up. I admit, I haven't read the Wanderlust rules yet, but I am a big fan of alternate universe stories.

So, uh... I guess I'm tentatively asking if I can be considered, if that's okay?

Oh, well... at lest the idea is from the main pony universe? Embarassed

Here's the character. If I need to change the flavoring so she isn't a phoenix, I can. I also understand if I don't get in for whatever reason...

@ MJ: ...Holy crap. That idea is brilliant, and the only reason you might not get in is that I did promise preference, although so far Bronymous is the only one with both preference and interest. Wow.

@ Cavalry: While I have offered preference to the previous veterans, it's still fairly likely that anyone else could get in. Like MJ there.

@ Bronymous: I had a thought for justifying a younger pair of twins.

Sometime after Ghostbuckers, but before the original MLW (Which I may be reviving, incidentally) the Twins stumbled upon a mirror that sucked them into an alternate world. They got lost, and spent two or three years finding their way back: only to discover that for everyone else at home it's been more like thirty years.

This justifies younger twins as explained, but also permits a variety of plot hooks for me (Their reappearance providing an additional mirror and accompanying world) and character development for you (As they are now temporal castaways, and besides, who knows what happened on the other side of that mirror?)

Ok some points to clear up:

RE: Phoenix Land- When I mentioned Phoenixes, that came from a specific thing of mind that is desperately more complicated then you would think, for various reasons- including the existence of my PC Phoenix (who is called that for a reason), and the situation of Phoenixes in MLP- one of which is now under consideration. If you want notes, I'll give you notes, but....

RE: Twins- I'm not sure I'm really a fan of that particular trope either- calls back to certain other things which can be connected in less than 6 degrees to the stuff I was talking about above. It could work, if it gives you more to work with and nets them significant plot time, then I'll play along, but I'm just gonna keep it under consideration until we have a full player list and my sheet is finalized.

I atually have more about her planned out, so would it be ok to message you about it? Or should we wait until things are more settled? (And I know that I have a spot...)

Question!
Is there a list of destinies for Wanderlust besides the ones the main document links to?

Sorry for asking... I'm not particularly familiar with Wanderlust yet. Case in point being my original character idea being scrapped because it doesn't have a Break the Fourth Wall talent.
Anyway, thought I'd best ask, just in case there were more destinies and I was missing them.

Nope, just the one for now. In any case, it isn't fully necessary to have a destiny all picked out if nothing is specific to the character. But if you like ot have one, there's no problem with that.

Okay! Looks like our player list is Bronymous, Sunbeam, MJ, and Cavalry. I have a full sheet from MJ, and concepts still needing sheets from MJ and Sunbeam. Bronymous has yet to get on the ball with that, but I should be able to get things moving once I have sheets.

I seem to have had forgotten that this was a thing I needed to work on. Luckily I have a 4 day weekend, so I can get some of it done and dealt with. Though I still don't know how I want the Twins to have grown up... I may not even play them at all if nothing suits me. In that case I'll need to come up with another character entirely, so lets hope something suits me.

Meet Eaglesong, our team medic. I will put a link to the backstory on the character sheet when I have a draft of it that is longer than two sentences (I blame Twitch Plays Pokemon).

I know the combat build is ridiculous, but I want to see if it can work.

Another obstacle with this rebuild of the Twins. Their primary purpose and mechanics were built around assists- they gave extra bonuses to assisted checks, made full use of the magical bonuses, etc., based on the theme of siblings that learned to help each other out and work as a team. A lot of those talents no longer exist in Wanderlust, so now not only am I looking at a personality rewrite, but a complete Non-Combat rebuild along a new theme.

I can offer you Helping Hands, Word of Advice, and Not This Day! for boosting other people's rolls. That's a solid 8 novice points right there, and there's similar versions in the Exalted Tier of the Support section. Add in handful of things like Nightwatch or Beginners luck, and you should have enough stuff. Just reading through your old bio, I am entertained by the idea of them taking smash the spell and just running into Forcefields at high speed and licking enchantments until they break down. It seems very dog-like. But that's just me.

I'll look into it again. But they weren't that dog-like in the younger versions, so I doubt after a life of fighting ghosts they'd become more playful and puppyish.
