Zilean's Revenge (Part 4)
Edit: There's an OOC thread. Links to stuff is there.
Skitter facepalms and gives a soft pained groan. They had figured out a risk free way to get everyone past the fence and immediately someone was already going out of the way to find ways to screw things up. He shook his head, not sure why bigger folk always tried the harder dumber path just to spite a simpler better plan simply because they weren't the one who came up with it.

Let's just say we all got in after a bit of complaining and elbowing. I managed to get the window seat. After witnessing the eldritch abominations floating off in the distance, I regret this.

It's funny you mention eldritch abominations. They've actually always been a part of D&D. Anything with the Aberration type basically. Like Beholders or Mindflayers.

Re: Zilean's Revenge (Part 4)
Yeah, unless Rolf doesn't want to go into the hole for some reason, you can assume he went inside as well, and is now with Skitter and co. on the other side of the fence.
As Horizon approaches, he accidentally steps on top of one of the discarded logs from the construction, rolling under his boot and stumbling him enough to miss his target, simultaneously alerting him. The cultist jumps back in shock, but then turns it into aggression, as he takes hold of a long stake hammer and takes a swing at Horizon.
Make an opposing athletics/acrobatics check with a -3 penalty to "avoid the swing". If you win, you can then try another athletics to try to overpower/kill him (you'd be at a lack of direct advantages though). If you fail either of those, you enter combat (at a disadvantage if you fail the first one).

Athletics: 3+10-3=10. Wellllp
The dice really didn't want me to have that one. I rolled 2 more times after the 3 to see what might have been, and got a 2 and a 1, in that order.

I'm sure you had a back up plan, right? Right? A professional contractor wouldn't go off on his own with a backup plan, right?

Yay. You're going to put the entire camp on high alert just like we didn't want. Like was predicted. Gosh, it's a wonder why every team doesn't want a non-team playing violent sociopath with the subtlety and patience of a brick of 40 year old dynamite. *rolls eyes*

Re: Zilean's Revenge (Part 4)
Well, so far, only that one cultist was alerted, and he hasn't yelled for alarm yet. Depending on how quick he can finish the battle (under 2-3 rounds is advisable), Horizon could salvage the situation (by avoiding the other guy from joining in, for example), or risks a harder battle and/or a full alert if he takes too long/blunders.
Anyways, will need an initiative roll, Brony. And since you didn't avoid the hammer, he gets a free 1d10+4 damage to deal to you, prior to initiative rolls.
Cultist initiative roll
d20 = 18
Free damage roll
1d10+4 -> 2 + 4 = 6 damage
Edit: Oh yeah, and everyone can roll perception because of reasons (Brony too, though he's probably too occupied at the moment to care).

Not sure why that guy didn't yell out the moment he saw Horizon honestly. But, too late, you already chose to have him not do so (twice really).

Maybe he's overconfident in his abilities, and thinks "he's got this" (ahahahahahah).
Or not thinking straight from the rage of this guy trying to stab him.
Or maybe he's just dumb.
Or he doesn't want to share any credit for a potential "intruder-dispatching promotion" from the big cheese with anyone else. More bragging and boasting privileges as well, which lets him nag everyone for his own amusement.
Or he believes he needs to prove to himself and his currently-awol partner that he's "not a pussy" and can deal with this intruder.
But he's still not dealing with the crazy rat man because hell no.

Re: Zilean's Revenge (Part 4)
The cultist takes another swing of his hammer, and lands a firm blow!
The start of the fight is suddenly rudely interrupted by a booming, overwhelming and familiar voice...
"YOU WORTHLESS MORON!"
Upon hearing the voice, the cultist Horizon is fighting becomes visibly shaken and distracted...
...and he isn't the only one - on the other side of the camp, everyone in the party hears the booming voice. Rolf and Zthulan manage to determine its source - It appears to be coming from the large, pulsating tent, generated by some voice-amplifying spell, if Rolf's hearing is not misleading him. Taking a peek from the shadows, they see a person, robed in purple, running through an opening in the barrier. He is obviously distressed, as he appears to be lit aflame with the intensity of a fire elemental, yet none of the grandeur. He flails around for a few seconds, before collapsing and not getting up.
"Let that be a lesson to anyone else too incompetent to adhere to the simple instructions of holding a beaker! Whoever was this clumsy fool's former lackey: congratulations, you have been promoted! Bring me some replacement beakers from the supplies, if you don't want to follow suit. Oh, and someone make sure that fool's remains don't go to waste."
- Hammer Cultist, turn 1:
- Hammer Swing - Standard Attack
Deal 1d10+4 damage to target creature. On a crit, dazes for a round.
1d10+4 = 9 + 4 = 13 damage

Re: Zilean's Revenge (Part 4)
Ok, down to 11 hp already. This can't not go well.
Horizon, ready for the hammer this time, allows himself to stand in the way as long as possible, in order to to counter and strike back at the cultist. He braces, and as the hammer connects, he grabs it and the cultist's wrist, twisting it and throwing him into the construction pile. He then staggers, as the pain from the blow and the disorienting voice hit him at the same time. His vision blurs and his mind blanks, but he remains standing. The last thing he hears before going blank is a familiar laugh.
"...About time you let me in..."

Re: Zilean's Revenge (Part 4)
Horizon takes the blow, staggering back from the impact, but doesn't react otherwise. He stands upright, and speaks. "Do you know what the best thing about a man is? His fear. Fear is such a malleable weakness, and any man can be turned to a child by the mere thought of his fears coming to life, coming to get him. When a free man would stand tall, denying all else, Fear is the one thing that will drag him into bondage. For example." As he speaks, a mass of black tendrils grow out from nothingness, twisting down his arm into his hand, where they coagulate and take form of a long polearm, topped by a twisted, wicked blade. He points the new weapon at the cultist, and a force pierces his mind searching out and taking hold of the cultist's fears like a leash, taking control of him. "Let's see what fear can inspire in you."
