Re: Hope's Refraction
Ugh. Candy? Seriously? Scales scowled as she sat on the floor. It might have been out of habit more than anything else, but the lack of shiny baubles in the room was irritating. Still, she listened as Shadow spoke, the frown slowly becoming more confused. She tilted her head to the side.
"Act'lly, I don't think it was Storm's attitude that did it," she said slowly. "I mean, that Fatpony started talk in' to him right away." Her frown became more pronounced. "And she looked at the rest of us when she talked about merchandise. And she said he moght want more. Ya think maybe she assu,we he owned us cause he... 'cause he is a dragon?"
Whereas, despite her protestations to the contrary, Scales was visibly a pony, so obviously didn't count as a dragon here. That thought soured her attitude more than the candy did.

Re: Hope's Refraction
Storm Fire listened Shadow speak, the explanation that it seemed that slavery, or something close to it was legal and accepted in this world, and that he was considered to be the master of the others. Once this was all said and done, he blinked once... twice... before sighing, and saying. “Speculation is useless... but it does mean we have something to look out for in particular once we head to the library.”
The dragon didn’t mull on this for too long, as his sister spoke up once more, quite easily bringing up a sore point to her along with it that made him frown... through he shrugged his wings as he said. “That might be, or it might be that I simply carry myself with the most confidence, which is why she honed in on me.” All that really mattered to Storm Fire, was learning about if this slavery thing was true or not.

"Not expecting you to change your demeanor. To ask for that would serve no purpose regardless. I simply felt it was critical to warn you all before we did much else. I don't doubt you could handle yourselves in a fight, but they may bring overwhelming odds on your side." Shadow nodded, turning and heading for the door. "Still, if there's nothing else, let's head to the library."

Re: Hope's Refraction
Following the direction smile gave you leads you to a large oak tree near the edge of town that looks like its seen better days. The side next to the town wall seems to have wilted due to lack of sunlight while the other half hasn’t fared much better, in all honestly it looks like a decent buck could send the thing crumbling down.
Upon entering you are greeted with a small half wave by a old bored looking mare with a book on her lap.
Giving the place a quick look over you see that the old mare herself seems to be the only one here, though that may have something to do with the lack of books and the large about of box’s are littering the floor.

What a dump...Then again, if slavery was all but legalized (And that was assuming it was, in fact, illegal, which might be a stretch,) education likely wasn't a priority. Nothing like a bit of learning to make the lessers question the way things were, after all. But...There should have been at least a few books here for the more literate...Still, Shadow slipped easily back into her less serious persona, approaching the older mare and smiling gently. "Excuse me, miss, but this...Is the library, correct?" she asked, wondering if the books were in those boxes...Perhaps she was getting ready to move?

She gives a warm smile as you approach “yes dear” she says with a smile “unfortunately most of the books have been packed away for moving to new location... the current one is not in the best condition” she sweeps her hoof out at this pointing at several points of damage along the interior of the building.
“honestly, I don’t know why we've stayed in the old place so long, you'd think the mayor would have given us permission for us to move sooner.” she gives a little huff at this before turning back towards your group “but never mind that dearies , are you looking for something in particular? I’m sure we can find a good book for you all to sink your teeth into.”

"Uh...yeah. You do that," Scales replied. She glanced around, clearly dissatisfied. It wasn't just from being inside a tree- but seriously, a tree? Who would live n a tree?- it wasn't just being inside a tree. From the way the granny was talking, and what Shadow said earlier, research sounded like it involved reading. No thanks.
Instead, trying to look cool and non-chalant, she leaned against the wall, looking out through the window for anything more...interesting.

"We were looking to brush up on our history, if you have anything like that...and...I noticed. Sad when a place to learn gets such low priority, isn't it?" She shook her head sadly, but looked back at her. She seemed to be the face of the team when they weren't assuming Storm ran the show, so best to act like it.

Re: Hope's Refraction
Storm Fire frowned when they reached the library. Living inside of a tree was rather strange, but it was how ill the tree looked that got a reaction. Unlike his sister, he wasn’t dissatisfied at the fact it was a tree. Though he was highly dissatisfied to see it look so empty and disused, making him wonder if it was a waste of time.
Having almost no knowledge of civilization at all, Storm Fire let Shadow do the talking, though he listened to make sure they didn’t miss anything. So, the library was still operating it seemed, just in the process of moving to a new location. Whilst he didn’t value education and learning as much as those two did, he still had to agree that they should of moved sooner.
“Reading... of course.” Storm muttered under his breath, shooting an amused look at his sister, knowing that she rather disliked reading and struggled to learn it. He had been helping her of course, but he wasn’t the best teacher and neither of them were exactly patient either. Storm wondered if he could get one of their companions to help Scales learn to read... and maybe work on his writing as well, he might need that in this new world.

Hmm...Glancing around, there wasn't too much left...Wait, that was-...'A Study of Brands and Duty?' Hrm, interesting. Shadow levitated it over, glancing at the book. "Oh! This seems interesting..." she said, smiling slightly. True enough. It might actually be relevant and answer at least one of the questions raised by that questionnaire.

- Dragons Roar:
- You find a book called the dragon’s roar, a small story book about how one small dragon, discovered his ‘roar’, venturing from his home on a mission of great importance, making friends and gaining may treasures along the way.
Extract from chapter one.
CloudRunner gave a great yawn as he woke up from his nap and stuck his head down through the clouds that made up his bed, true he may not have been able to breathe fire like the rest of his clutch but at times like this it was worth it, no matter how much teasing he got for it.
The warm air hitting his scales as he rested upon pure clouds was one of the most pleasant feelings he had ever experienced, something that filled him with joy from the very moment he woke up, something that was purely his as opposed to his family’s and that to him made it all the more special.
A rapidly growing smirk played across his mussel as the sound of laughter reached his ears, specifically the voice of one of his brothers who had just made the mistake of accidently laying down right below his cloud.
With a small shift he rolled though the cloud, dive-bombing straight downward with a shriek of joy as his brothers face froze at the sight of him, yes there were defiantly perks of his ability to cloud walk.
......
..........
Cloudrunner woke up and knew immediately something was wrong, the wind blew with the sent of ash, devoid of the usual birdsong that was the norm, sticking his head down through the clouds his mouth dropped open as he stared at the devastation beneath him, at the ruins that where once his home.
- Extract from A study of Brands and Duty by sir Seraphic seal.:
After gaining permission from the church i have embarked upon this task in order to hopefully shed some light upon the matter of the brandless, i hope with this work we may reduce the number of souls that reject our lady’s light.
The Rejected, the Corrupt and the Banished.
As stated before The brand that adorns our flank is a gift from our Lady Destiny so that we may understand purpose of our existence, the Brandless however can be separated into three major categories, the Rejected, the Corrupt and the banished.
The Rejected are those who do not gain there mark at all and are more commonly known as the forgotten by the general population, however both names are misleading as rather than having been rejected are forgotten it is they themselves who have rejected the light of order, discarded the truth of themselves and as such never understood there true purposes, instead choosing on some level, to instead wallow in selfishness and darker thoughts..
These individuals are by far most the most fortunate of the brandless in that it is relatively simple to cure with time and effort. As such there is little to fear from them but instead bee looked upon with pity as it may by be by that very process that they gain their own brand.
Though my study’s most of these cases have been shown to be caused by feelings of worthlessness, regret or deep sorrow, something that with the proper care and guidance can be cured, finding purpose and soles in the embrace Destiny’s light, allowing them to become who they are truly meant to be.
The Corrupt commit the sin of rejecting the Destiny’s Light after it has touched their hearts, unlike the Rejected they themselves voluntarily give up, sell or otherwise destroy their brand.
Through time and effort i was able to interview one such criminal before his stay in an rehabilitation centre. His words entreated me when he stated that ‘it was like a veil had been lifted from him, he no longer had to be ‘just’ himself’, however i wasn’t able to get much more out of him before his stay began.
Yet after his stay he had once more found his purpose and commented upon how he was a fool to try and lose himself, that by rejecting the Light he had lost himself, lost what made him have purpose and that once he realised that it became clear what he had to do.
The Corrupted generally have a there brand shattered in some sort of way, not to be mixed up with those brands that naturally have such a effect, these differ because by their very nature do not look natural. The exception to this however is those that sell themselves, gaining a (0 with a / through it ) symbol as a reminder of their crime.
Unlike the others the banished are unredeemable, ponies who have committed such unspeakable acts that the light of destiny itself rejects them rather than the other way around such as with the corrupted. They become monsters wearing the skin of one of our own, abominations of an unnatural nature who’s only purpose is to sow confusion and despair.
These individuals cannot be reason with, lost so far to darkness that the only mercy that we may give them is a swift death. Should you encounter one such individual it is advised to run and tell the nearest guard about the situation ,these monsters marked by the shadowy outline of their rejected destiny upon their flank, can only be given one final mercy, a quick death.

The Lands of Equestria... the title caught Zakiyya's eye giving her a feeling that such a book might be useful to someone new to this world...

Re: Hope's Refraction
That was somewhat troubling, actually. It seemed as if those insipid cutie marks that ponies sought so much back home were shackles here, binding them to a calling whether they liked it or not. Problematic. But it explained why it was labeled as destiny, not talent...She flipped through a bit more, nodding to herself. She'd need to catch the others up later. "Do you mind if I borrow this for a bit?" she asked, glancing at the librarian.

Re: Hope's Refraction
After Storm had finished reading the first chapter for Scales, he paused. Turning to look at his sister in amusement as he teased. "Congratulations sis, you picked out a story book." Despite the fact that Scales had found a story and not actual information like they had been looking for... Storm wanted to keep the book. It was unusual for a story to have a dragon has a good guy, let alone the main hero. Especially not a Weather Wyrm like himself.
