Hey there everypony! I've finally got something to work with Rainbow's face, and here's the link: https://docs.google.com/document/d/18qk5HkwSJmeL1kU3knGYMd0HD7CB94QAzUJT65lj3M4/edit I really do think it kinda fits, just search up Painis Cupcake Smile. So spread the meme!

What. I don't even... why would anyone want to spread memes? I thought the success metric for the human race was how many memes we successfully eradicated.

Or was that xenomorphs?

... Neutral
That's... not how memes work. First of all, memetic meme is redundant. Razz Secondly, you can't just tell people, "Hey, this is a meme, propagate it!" That's called "forcing" it, and it rarely works. The concept behind memes is that they just grow naturally, without anyone having to induce its growth. So, yeah. As a matter of fact, that face went around just after the episode for a while. It's nothing new.
So, err, yeah. Stop that.
Now, if you really want to start a meme, we should try and bring back "rufus." Seriously, why didn't that catch on?! Razz

Another thing: A lot of the reasons people dislike bronies (I've been on MULTIPLE sites with this) is due to those types of things. Screencaps of the show with blurbs of text on them posted all over and way too commonly in forums.
So yeah.
Make the memes die.

You're right. This is something we have to figure out as a community.
Personally, I've never really understood the hate. We watch a show. Granted, it's supposed to be for girls or whatever, but we've defended ourselves well enough, haven't we? Just let us enjoy it. I was reading a /tg/ archive the other day, and I was just nonplussed at the utter hatred we've accrued. One guy recommended basically throwing us into a nuclear waste site! D: What did we do?

Post  Ramsus Fri Sep 14, 2012 3:57 pm

I've actually never understood either side of the issue.

I don't get the whole "Brony" thing. I mean, I watch a lot of shows. Do I have to call myself a Sailor Moony or a True Bloody or a Throney or Yuru Yurey? No, because that's dumb. I don't understand the desire to classify yourself based on one thing you enjoy. Or the need to defend it. Since when have guys not watched "girls shows". Hell, most of us who watch anime do that all the time and never bother even contemplating having to defend it.

I don't understand that hate on the other side either. If those people watch....anything at all they probably also watch something not specifically aimed at them. Maybe they're annoyed at how bronies act? Which makes it then weird that anger isn't more focused on the people in particular than the group of people who are "anyone who watches the show".

I also don't understand actively liking memes, watching sports on TV, or a lot of other things though. I just find a whole lot of things dumb, these issues really being the least of them. Still, I figured this was a good opportunity to ask why people feel the need to call themselves bronies.

I mean that I think it's weird to do that for one show and not for everything else you watch. I mean, I highly doubt it's even most bronies favorite show. Why make the gesture for one thing and not everything else? Just following the pack?

Well I'd more agrue that it's the size and scope of the fandom itself that makes find fun in calling myself a Brony. It's so very much complex to the point that the fandom itself is worthy of such an identy it has I'd say. I mean what show out there get's an RPG pen and paper system imspired by a fancomic of a cartoon for little girls? That fact alone is why I think the term Brony exists...

And it's not like we're the only fandom that does it.

Star Trek has Trekkies,
The Daily Show has Stoned Slackers
Doctor Who has Whovians
Lady Gaga has Little Monsters
etc.
etc.

Sometimes a fandom comes up with names for itself and they stick
And sometimes a fandom appropriate names from people who dislike it
And sometimes a fandom just doesn't have a name for itself

Basically I think it happens when people have a lot of passion for something and want to meet other people with that same sort of passion. Then people with less passion but still some pick up on the name too, and then the fandom in general does it, and sometimes in some fandoms none of that happens not necessarily because people are less passionate but just because it doesn't happen
And all that is fine???

Or if it isn't fine it's not like we're the only fandom in existence with this vice, at least. Misery loves company. Twisted Evil

Do you know how many shows have a p&p RPG? So friggin many it's not even funny. You want a Powerpuff Girls RPG? It's out there. Probably an official printed version too.

I guess some other stuff has fandom names too. But...not all of them. Or even most. Or really even a lot as far as I know. I guess I find Trekkies just as weird as Bronies (not the people, just bothering labeling yourself as such). There are still way more Star Wars fans than either (or probably both combined multiplied and combined again really...) and yet...no real name for that group. (I like all of these things btw but, don't ascribe to describing myself based on such things. Hell, I don't call myself a gamer or such things either.)

Edit: Huh. Ok, maybe there are more crazy people fandom names out there than I thought. I still find it really weird and refuse to do it myself though.

Edit 2: Going off topic is almost my specialty (thus all the paragraph talk in almost any post I make anywhere on the internet).

Oh, sweet! You're a discordian? I've always wanted to meet one. While I don't fully agree with all of your tenets, I find it incredibly fascinating as a concept. What do you like to do in the name of your religion? Why did you decide to become a discordian? Oh, and fnord!

I'm a discordian too. Er....or I was. Then a friend and I made our own sect (based on the rules of hotdog consumption), then I went and made my own Eris based religion/half-thought out philosophy that's much more serious in nature (so...almost serious). I guess I'd call it Erisian if I had to call it something aside from "beliefs what Ramsus has and general outlook". *shrug*

You know, I think Discordianism encourages that sense of free thought and personal definition of its belief. Of course, Discordianism encourages everything, so... Razz
I just love it! It's such a silly religion, and yet there's this deep, underlying sense of genius to it. If I didn't believe in moral absolutism and the existence of God, I'd probably convert. Very Happy But I am happy to be a Pope, though. Wink

I rather like calling myself a Brony. Mainly because the large majority of bronies I've met have been kind, inspiring and thoughtful. (That includes all you people). It's also helped me find a bit more direction and balance in my life. And helped me stay focused on writing amongst other things. I love it, and am entirely unashamed to call myself a brony. But I do dislike the notion of trying to force the show on others when they clearly don't want any part of it, that type of action is entirely unnecessary and I cringe any time I see it.

Just my thoughts on being a brony.

Post  Prof. Charles Hoofington Mon Sep 17, 2012 7:16 am

Oh wow, people that have actually heard of discordanism. Thats a first.

serious philosophy/religion warning. I'll try not to insult anybody, but the very nature of belief means that I may state something you disagree with.

I don't really do much in the name of discordanism, being a sect of 1. I don't even bother with the whole "no hotdog buns" thing, but I use my powers as pope to retroactively declare those days to be Fridays when ever I start to feel self conscious about it. Mainly I just use it as an excuse for not caring about what other people think of me, but I understand enough to care about other people- I am quite socialist like that. Long story short- discordanism let's me act how I want, but I still take my impacts upon other people into consideration. This is partly because I believe that the role of discordans is to relive the humdrum of every day reality- pinkie pie: the religion essentially.

I became a discordian a couple of years back (just before I discovered mlp) when I wiki walked to its tv tropes page. After reading the principia discordia, I fell in love with the silliness of the religion. I had been raised by an atheist dad and a Christian mother, so I was never too sure where my beliefs lay. I had difficulty accepting the idea of a perfect being, especially since I was dyspraxic- if god existed, why was I mentally disabled? But at the same time, I felt uncomfortable with the idea that there isn't anything out there, that we are alone, that our failures and successes where wholly ours.

Discordanism gives me an outlet for that. It is blantantly silly, literally being the ramblings of a group of guys on acid. It allows me to give my faith to an imperfect being who I know doesn't exist and accept the natural universe as it is-I am a scientist who accepts the laws of physics as well. The philosophy on the nature of chaos and order, and how chaos isn't a bad thing, but a natural force that should be encouraged (the amount of order in this world IS TOO DAMN HIGH!) is an added bonus.

Not to mention that I am a pope as well. That part is just awesome.

Edit- forget to mention a bit more about the popey stuff- since everyone is a pope, everyone is equal in terms of power and standing, therefore everyone is equal, period.

That's somewhat similar to where I went with it. (For the hotdog bun thing we made it so that eating them also made you a Discordian, like it or not, so if you already were you were out and then back in and also....everyone who ever ate a hotdog bun on a friday was secretly (to them) a discordian. =P )

I dropped the silliness (not that silliness is bad, it's just simply another thing) and view things such that the whole of existence is chaos and our universe is just a small pocket of relative order within it (since it's not really chaos if order doesn't randomly show up on occasion). I view Eris more like a convenient avatar for the human mind to latch on to to attempt to communicate with the divine chaos that is in essence everything. Mostly I pray for things to change or altering the order of things (though only when I'm willing to risk Eris' capriciousness in the method it's granted) .

I don't really believe in any moral or ethical tenants or religious practices as such and figure people are going to do what they like and that's overall fine, even if specific things people do are not personally fine with me. That's my problem, not everyone/everything else's and it doesn't make sense to me that my moral/ethical outlook would ever match more than superficially with anyone else's. Or even mine the next day for that matter.

As a note, I just view order as a subsystem of chaos, not as an opposing force or an equal one.

Post  Prof. Charles Hoofington Mon Sep 17, 2012 3:48 pm

Yeah, that way is a decent way to be a discrodian.

major tangent on the nature of order and chaos ahead.

My view on chaos and order, specifically, are that they are two natural forces in a dynamic equilibrium, with one begetting the other and vice versa, but the total levels of order and chaos being the same.
Well, up until humanity came along, creating order, disrupting the balance and then when that order converts to chaos it is too drastic to handle. Cities come to mind- great edifices of order where millions of people are found, living in small, ordered boxes, living ordered lives, yet from the ground level you have the mass of crowds, the rush of traffic- the stressful chaos of everyday life in the city. Order creates chaos.

Therefore, as a discordian I see it as my oft-ignored duty (what? I'm lazy.) to convert some of this order into constructive chaos.

Also, I would like to apologise to the OP for massively derailing this thread.

Well if you really think about it... Normally Meme's are used to derail threads. So it's really fitting for a thread that's about a Meme itself is derailed as badly as we did.

And by the way, on the topic of Faith... I'm personally an Atheist and totally not ashamed of that fact. After all once you lack shame for enjoying a show for little girls when your an adult man, there is little left to shame you left. But that's all I'm going to say about faith, cause I don't really feel like taking more about other then saying the only label that fits me best. Also I've not got a clue what this "discrodian" thing is... >.>
