Re: Khan of the Steppes
Anenome gracefully leads the way, making the trek with no difficulty, although she does make some noise pushing through plants and sending a few small stones flying. Zane emerges at the waterfall with a number of burrs attached to his legs, and a couple of very minor bruises from being hit or tripping over the dislodged pebbles. The group manages to not make too much of a disturbance while moving though, and any traces are removed by Sleipnir.
As soon as you see the waterfall, the eagle dashes forward and flies into the small pond at its base, splashing about to clean his feathers of the dirt and leaves it had gathered from being caught in the net- and also from the walk; which it had conducted quite clumsily.

"Well, this would seem really quite nice.
Though I do not believe I could find this twice."
Zane follows the eagle to the base of the pond and splashes some water on his bruises, taking care not to knock the burrs loose.
After a moment, Zane politely comments to the eagle,
"You do not have to walk; you may continue to fly.
Just remain near the rocks; do not go to open sky."

Re: Khan of the Steppes
The eagle bobs its head, nodding at Zane's permission for it to fly.
"Don't know what you want me help you with, seems Gazelle better scout than I! How she spot waterfall from so far away? Couldn't see it until just coming out from trees. Didn't see it from air earlier. Can she see through trees?"
The trees grow fairly tall around the waterfall, as well as there being some trees above the ledge from which the water descends, which would block the sight of it from the air.
The eagle stares intently at Anenome for a moment, before watching Zane wash up, staring at the burrs. "Why you no get rid of those? Look itchy and scratchy."

Re: Khan of the Steppes
Zane lays down next to the pool of water, resting his legs.
"Her scouting skills are indeed rather impressive,
though I know not if trees disappear from her perspective."
Zane turns to look at Anemone for a moment, trying to see if there's something that might betray her ability to scout, before shrugging and turning back to the eagle.
"I do not believe scouting is something you can overdo.
You also have the advantage of gaining an aerial view.
As for the clinging seeds, they may cause a slight itch,
But it is how they proceed. They cannot walk so they hitch.
Once we have traveled from where they latched,
they will drop off when they find a place to hatch."

- Hey, a set of rhymes I'm actually pretty pleased with!
Zane is laying in the pony sense of sitting? I don't know the proper terms. He's on his stomach/legs, not on his side.
Also, everyone in the group can hear what Zane is saying. Looking at you, Anemone.
Because...you know. Zane looked at you. Literally. :^I

Anemone shrugs, having no simple sentence to describe years of training and experience, and then with a nod says, "Yes, an aerial view will always be a boon to us."

Sleipnir finishes his drink and wipes his mouth with a hoof. He turns to Anemone. "This must be one of the hidden water caches I have heard so much about. I would be interested to know whether there are any others you can show me on our travels. We have found one or two in the Green Sea, and they have made the Prairie Striders strong."
Sleipnir then takes a moment to look around at all the nice scenery. The lush vegetation a welcome sight after the dryness of the trip to the Meet. "So, where do we go from here?"

Re: Khan of the Steppes
Zane squints his eyes at the eagle, still thinking about a name.
"How would you feel about being called by the name 'Red'?
I noticed your claws were wiped, but remained like they bled."
Zane then turns his head toward Sleipnir before the eagle can respond.
"I will reveal the path, do not worry; the most direct route to our destination will take us across the Highlands.
We will pass through Red Hoof territory, but they should not bother us if we acknowledge their demands."
Zane shrugs after this statement, implying that it may not be a good thing, but it must be done.

Re: Khan of the Steppes
"I know the territory well myself. I think it may be best to simply avoid the Red Hooves where we can." Anemone says. Then she starts drawing a rough map in the dirt along with a route she thinks would be quick and provides cover without limiting their options too often in case of need of escape or a detour. When she's done she looks to the others, in particular Zane, "I think this would work, what do you think?"
GM, should I roll a skill for this? If so, I tend to use Streetwise additionally as Survival since they do basically the same thing just in different circumstances and you never really need to use one when you're in a position to use the other.
Edit: Though if you'd prefer I roll Perception or History or such... *shrug*
Edit 2: Streetwise: 8 + 15 = 23

Re: Khan of the Steppes
"Red? Like the look of that. Yes, Red is good name. Red is bold color. Red is delicious color!"
Red watches you make the map, and seems to understand. After all, a map makes a lot of sense to someone who is used to an aerial view.
You feel pretty confident about the route you've laid out- it's still quite direct, and should put you out of the way of most Redhooves if their positions haven't changed. It should take you about 4 days to reach the general area of the Mist Tails, and you still have some time today to travel. The sun is still pretty high in the sky, but it is certainly past noon.

- Timey Wimey:
- Looks it's time for a time skip! As usual if anyone objects we can back up temporarily, if you weren't done with the last location or wanted to describe doing anything on the way.
You all have made your way down the mountain and through the forest- the trees have thinned and the land has mostly flattened out, though small ridges, rock formations, and slight hills make the plain more interesting than someone unfamiliar with the steppe would expect. You make good progress, making a fairly straight path taking advantage of available cover, leaving few tracks or traces of your passing.
The sun is out of sight, but maintains its presence through the sliver of light on the horizon in vivid colors- but most of the sky is dark. A distance ahead of you, just in sight- almost directly in the path you had set, is the bright light of a campfire, quite noticable, and unusually large for the two small, strangely shaped tents around it.
Re: Khan of the Steppes
Silver paused a bit at the camp, looking at the others for a moment with a worried expression crossing her features, taking a breath and holding up a hand to indicate the others should pause. "That's odd...They're trying to make sure they're noticed...Not to mention the camp is about as in the way as it gets. Either someone cut us off and is gloating or we have some ponies who are truly terrible at managing resources..." She thought for a moment, gripping her staff tightly with one hand and tapping the ground with it as she did so. "If you want, I can try and slip up on them, see if I can figure out who they are, what they're up to..." Truth be told, she probably would regardless of plans unless they wanted to stick together...As it was, she strained her eyes, trying to see if she could make out any further details from here...

Re: Khan of the Steppes
Silver can certainly see the fire very clearly- it's bright enough that the tents around it are only really silhouettes at this point. The fire doesn't have any immediately apparent purpose- it's not sending up signals, and nothing seems to be cooking. The two tents are triangular, and very small- accounting for distance, probably just large enough for an average equinoid to sleep in. No other details are really noticeable from this distance and light.
Re: Khan of the Steppes
If Red is near to Zane, the zebra will turn to him and whisper,
"Do you recognize those tents?
Should we move to circumvent?"
(If Red's not near Zane, then nothing happens, obviously.)

Re: Khan of the Steppes
Grateful for a break, Book Smart looked over at the camp. "It might be a good idea. After all," he said while resting, "we don't know who they are, and with Crimson Hoof after us, a little caution couldn't hurt." He peered at the strange grouping, eyes narrowed in thought. "Those tents do looks weird. I wonder who they could be..."
- Tales of the Steppe!:
- Well, the camp sounds to be fairly distinctive and unusual. I don't know if this is a style common to some group out here, but it's worth a shot. Let's see if Book's heard tale of a people that like to use this sort of encampment:
History: d20 + 21 = 10 + 21 = 31
Note: It sounded like it was well-lit, but if I need to make a Perception check for this, let me know!

Re: Khan of the Steppes
- Book Smart:
It's well-lit, but it's hard to see more than shadows at this point. Still, I'll let you do the check based off of what you can see, and what Silver can describe from what she saw without making another check (unless you want to try anyways). Simple tents like the ones seen are generally only used by travelers going long distances, as most steppe-dwellers live in the larger circular Ger or some other variant on the yurt- in any case usually something larger and more comfortable. The particular shape of these tents is more often used by others not from the steppe. Without a closer look at details that's all you can figure out though. You think with a good look (or descriptions from someone else going to look) you could pinpoint the source better.
"Tents! Don't know. See many tents. Those type tents move lots. Don't belong to Pony." Red screeches with complete lack of concern for volume. There is still no noticeable change at the camp- you still can't see whether there's anyone there or what they're doing, but there's clearly no commotion. All they would have heard was a distant eagle screeching- not an uncommon sound.
Re: Khan of the Steppes
"Aneome's right. We should send Silver and Red to take a look. I don't think these are Crimson Hoof's, but I have heard of this kind of tent being used by foreigners. If these are friendly travelers, they deserve warning about the Redhoof tribe."

Sleipnir nods his agreement at the plan. "They are definitely not of the Steppes. Caution is advised, even though it looks like we outnumber them. We don't know if this is a trap. We might have managed to skirt the Red Hooves for now, but who knows what else lurks out here."

Silver glanced over and nodded, thinking for a moment about the best possible approaches to get closer unseen...But after a moment, she seemed to make a decision, speaking quietly. "I'll be right back. Stay here. If I need you, you'll know it." With that, the minitaur began her approach, keeping low, slinking along in the shadows...

Zane opens his mouth to respond, but Silver has already moved away. Somewhat off-put, he sits down and lets his still compacted yurt stand on its own.

Re: Khan of the Steppes
- Silver Steele:
- You sneak up upon the small camp, hearing soft voices in strange languages as you approach. It seems to be a sort of mishmash of languages- some words are almost recognizable as words in the steppe tongue, some common words used by foreign merchants, and some completely alien- but possibly belonging to the same language as that of the merchants. The voices don't change as you approach, nor is there any movement. The tents are as small as would be guessed at a distance- they seem to be practically only a couple of sticks in the ground holding up the points of simple cloth roofs. Under the two tents were the two camels you had seen at the meet. A number of chests and bags are right next to each tent.
Red flew off and began circling above the camp.
Re: Khan of the Steppes
Steele was a bit curious as to what, exactly, was in those bags and chests...Those two, she recognized them...They'd been at...Perhaps they were just traders of some stripe after all, but why had they been dressed in the local fashion if they were foreigners...She lingered for a moment, keeping low-key for a bit, trying to see if there was anything that would hint at their purpose for being here...Though, before too long, she'd return to the others, knowing better than to turn a simple scouting mission into a cherry-picking session...
- rolls:
- Perception to see if I can make out anything in particular from the merchant's talking...
1d20+10 = 14+10 = 24
Stealth to look for anything they shouldn't have in the bags before slipping back to the team:
1d20+17 = 17+17 = 34

Re: Khan of the Steppes
- Silver Steele Scouting:
- Steele manages to overhear their conversation, but is only able to understand some words, that the merchants had to borrow from the Steppe language to explain some things. Part of the discussion seemed to be about the Meet, and Udus Khan is mentioned, as well as the names of various clans. At one point it sounds like the camels are arguing about routes to take, mentioning the desert to the south as well as the Sunstone and Sand Scorpion clans. They do not appear to notice Silver at all.
A quick look at the bags show they are mostly made up of the sorts of trinkets that merchants bring to trade on the steppes, simple objects made of exotic materials and made of finer craftsmanship than is generally available locally. One bag contains simple rations, dried fruits and bread (not common on the steppes: this foreign food relies much more on sedentary agriculture). There are a couple of chests, probably one carried by each camel, but they are locked.
