Fever Enigmatic

Summer's eyes narrowed slightly. "Telekinesis isn't cheating." she said coldly.

Marvel raised an eyebrow. "No need to be touchy. You haven't heard of the Tiny Missile spell?"

Summer's lips were still pursed. "Of course I've heard of it. I'm also sure that the judges have heard of it, and will be looking for it."

Sunset Stroll represses a sigh, but does quietly roll his eyes. "You need a partner for the Apple Toss, don't you? Isn't there a tradition of asking somepony special to join you?" He had no idea if that was true, but it seemed a safe way to move the conversation on.

Marvel had started to reply, but was interrupted, and decided to take Sunset's cue to move on. "Somepony special, you say," she said, looking at the sleeping form of Winter. "Or is that 'special somepony'?" she said, looking back his way with a hint of a smirk.

Sunset shrugs, suppressing a smile. "Clearly my memory on the subject is less than perfect."

Summer felt her face heating up even more. "Light Burst didn't say anything about needing partners for the toss." She said, embarrassed.

"Hmmm.... It does sound like more fun that way," Misfortune said as she walked around the edge of the room. "But if you haven't got anyone picked out, well then what..." She looked at Sunset. Conveniently, she was behind him, and he was standing between her Summer Wishes. "Oh! I know!"

"Sunset, why don't you go to the apple toss with her?" she said, putting her hooves up to push him towards Summer. "I'll probably end up running medic duty for it, and Bitter Medicine can work the clinic, so it's not like you'll be doing anything at the moment anyways!" she continued, putting a big, flashy smile on as she maneuvered around to where both of them could see. "You two could even practice a bit while we wait on Winter to wake up! How convenient!"

As Sunset stumbles forward, something clicks in his mind, and he shakes his head, quietly waiting for Marvel to finish talking. "Unfortunately, it's the egg toss that's paired. I remember Lustrous Ivy discussing the implications of this year's teams. The apple toss is...something else. I vaguely remember hearing a story about the Glow Triplets being disqualified for trying to use a trebuchet, but that may have been apocryphal. This is my first Summer games, so I don't know why I was guessing so confidently to begin with." He finishes looking both a little sheepish and a little disappointed.

"I don't think very many ponies are going to be getting a 'good nights' sleep after tonight's festivities," Fairy answered.

She looked at Fluffy for a moment, before frowning.
"You... do have some protection at your home, don't you? I admit, as... comfortable as it is having another changeling within walking distance, I don't like the idea of tonight's thief making a repeat performance on a fellow changelings home".

Summer fidgeted for a second, then said sheepishly "Well, if you don't mind, I could probably use some help practicing for the apple toss, and it would help to actually be doing something other than waiting around." Suddenly very glad he coloring made it difficult to tell when she was blushing, she pawed at the ground awkwardly. "I mean, if you have time. Clinic work, that's a pretty important job."

Sunset Stroll hesitates, then nods. "Technically Marvel has the rest of the night shift; I was just keeping her company. So why not? I could stand to get out of the clinic on something other than emergency business."

As they leave, he shoots Marvel a look that he hope conveys 'Marvelous Misfortune, however I may look, I am over 40 years old, as you now know. Shame on you and your antics.'

But playfully.

"Just stay within shouting distance and I'll be fine," Marvel said reassuringly, returning Sunset's look with a wink. Glad I could help!

Fluffy Crust hung her head at Fairy Charmer's question and started to walk off, "My house might have too much protection.  Guests don't tend to make it out without injury."

"Ah, yes. I almost forgot about that."

So the calamities around Fluffy's property weren't "accidents"? Maybe that wasn't what she meant, but it certainly sounded like it.

"In that case, I suppose I should head home as well. A diva does need her beauty sleep, after all... Good night, Fluffy."

Sunset takes a deep, appreciative, breath of the night air and looks up at the moon. "Do you think anyone will be mad at us for using the field at this hour?" He absently asks Summer.

Summer shrugged. "I don't know why they would. It's not likely anypony else is using it." Summer trotted to where she and Moonlight had been tossing apples earlier, hoping the bag they were using was still there.

"Apple tossing is a rather quiet endeavor." Sunset observes, meandering after Summer while picking out constellations. "You went to Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns, right?" He asks when he catches up to her.

"Yep."Summer said bluntly. She picked up an apple telekinetically, and spun it absently. "So, apple tossing is pretty straightforward. Just catch and return. " She walked the appropriate distance from him and turned to face him. "Ready to start?"

"Sure!" Sunset says brightly, not appearing to have noticed the short response.

"Okay. So, if you don't mind my asking, what was the deal with you and Ms...I don't believe I caught her name?" Summer frowned, trying to remember if she had caught her name. Summer tried to toss the apple, but...

Sunset takes a few steps forward, picks up the apple in his teeth, then backs up again. He tosses it back with a careful twist of his neck, and replies, "Marvelous Misfortune. She has a number of different abbreviations, and I haven't yet picked up on her exact preferences. What do you mean by 'the deal?'"

This time Summer was able to catch the apple a little better. Summer didn't use her telekinesis for much other than the basics, so this was probably good for her. "You mean you didn't notice how she was almost shoving you out the door to come help me with the toss?" she asked, raising an eyeridge in disbelief.

"Actually, I could think of several things you could be commenting on, and I wanted to narrow it down." Sunset says, his wide smile visible in the moonlight. "And yes, I did. Marvel and I...well, let's just say our demons are quite compatible. I think it's a rare occurrence for her." He reaches into the barrel and fishes out another apple, tossing it with his hoof, and finding it much more to his liking. "What did you study at school?" He doubted it would help, but the full title of her alma mater clearly didn't sit well with Summer.
