Re: The Sunless Realms (Pony Souls IC Thread)
The group makes it across with mostly little difficulty - Kabra'za almost loses his footing, but corrects just in time and hops across just as Hope lumbers ashore. Gaunt Quiver and Eclipse have already began following in the wake of the timberwolf, clambering over toppled trees and branches.
Following the wolf, it doesn't take long before they reach the clearing Umber saw in the wolf's memory.
It's obvious that a terrible struggle has taken place. The undergrowth is trampled, claw marks score all over the soft earth, and numerous piles of timberwolf remains litter the area.
Oh, and there's also the towering stone-skinned creature, stomping onto a timberwolf that was attempting to reform. A heavy set of stony talons crush down onto the bundle of living wood, pulverizing the creature to dust.
The monstrosity appears to be vaguely avian, with raptor-like legs and wings composed of dagger-like stone flints, currently folded up at its side. It has an elongated neck, and a mildly curved beak with serrations on the edges. Most uniquely, though, is that it doesn't seem to have eyes. Instead, a cancerous stone-like tumor sprouts from its face, covering most of the top part of its head, almost like a deformed crown. It whips a powerful, scaly tale around, crushing a tree under its impact.
The wolf howls in challenge, and throws itself against the monstrosity. The deformed stone-creature lets out an equally chilling screech, and retaliates in kind, swinging its tail around and slamming the wolf into the bordering trees. Undaunted, the wolf clambers to its feet, preparing to do battle.
Gaunt seems to hang back for a moment, before his eyes widen. "It's the other expedition team!"
Sure enough, trapped under a collapsed log seems to be two of the other scouting team. On closer inspection, the ragged and scattered remains of some others can be spotted as well, as well as the prone form of Arrow Flint, the leader of the other team, lying to one side.
"I shall rescue them!" Eclipse cries out, suddenly running out to help the others. Gaunt growls something about hotblooded idiots before flying high, and trying to find an opening to get the trapped ponies as well.

Ghreham hangs back momentarily, focusing on the stone monstrosity and trying to sense the strength of its soul, gauging whether or not it's worth the trouble.

A quick scan of the creature confirms that it possesses quite the powerful soul - a foe worth challenging.
While Ghreham is doing this, the beast hisses angrily at the timberwolf, and rushes it while the wolf is still regaining its footing. It drives its spear-like beak into the wolf, knocking it sideways and causing the wood surrounding the body to begin to gradually rot away.

Re: The Sunless Realms (Pony Souls IC Thread)
There was a time and a place for being subtle. Now was not that time.
"Shadow, go." was all Kabra'za muttered under his breath as he waved towards the trapped ponies, ordering his shadow to assist in whatever rescue efforts were going to be made. Without a word, his shadow abandoned its connection to him, forsaking all pretense of being nothing more then a normal shadow in order to zoom along the ground towards where the trapped ponies were. Granted it lacked his abilities as a healer, but it could still move things if required.
Now free to engage the stone monster at will, Kabra'za took a moment to remove his hat before reaching into and withdrawing what appeared to be a hoof's worth of some strange kind of seed. Scattering them onto the ground before him, the zebra shouted the command "Tartafie!", causing -all- of the seeds to start digging into the earth they were on top of. Where one of the seeds had planted itself, a twisting bundle of roots burst from the soil and started to bend and twist together in order to form the shape of a meditating equine... through inside of a horse's head, that of a spitting cobra was there instead.
Satisfied that the first of his enhancing totems had risen, Kabra'za took a deep breath before turning to the stone beast again and prepared himself for what was to come. "Taefan!" A dark mist rose from his body as he pointed a hoof towards the stone creature, for a moment coiling around him before a copy of the mist appeared around the beast's head, forcing itself into whatever openings that it could find. For a horrible moment Kabra'za feared backlash for his spell, but the darkness around him faded without consequence to himself.
The cobra headed root totem slowly turned its eyeless gaze towards the stone moment... before it began to glow with the same dark mist that Kabra'za had summoned moments before, already getting to work at enhancing the raw destructive power of entropy that Kabra'za had cursed the stone beast with.

Re: The Sunless Realms (Pony Souls IC Thread)
The stone creature rears back and hisses at the appearance of the new enemy, but strangely enough the magic doesn't seem to take hold in its entirety - a dark power belonging to the creature itself seems to shield it from the worst of Kabra'za's voodoo magic.

Re: The Sunless Realms (Pony Souls IC Thread)
The Timberwolf howls, and runs up to the monstrosity, attempting to clamp its jaws around the stone creature's neck - however, as it closes in, the Monstrosity flares its wings out, shielding itself from the worst of the assault while slicing the front of the timberwolf to ribbons with its numerous razor-sharp quills.
As the wolf falls back, the Monstrosity seems momentarily torn between attacking the timberwolf and attacking Haskur, before a glint of predatory cunning reaches its eyes and it whips around, the spines detaching from its tail and sailing through the air in a hail of deadly stone javelins. The spines hit Haskur, the wolf, Kabra'za and his conjured totem.
The voodoo curse continues to eat away at the Monstrosity, but again, it seems to have an inherent resilience to such things, suffering much less damage than Kabra'za would have thought.
Haskur, the Wolf, Kabra'za and his conjuration take 10 damage, and Haskur suffers vulnerability 3 (save ends).
The Monstrosity fails to save against ongoing damage.

Re: The Sunless Realms (Pony Souls IC Thread)
Hope's eyes went wide at the sight of the monstrosity, as well as what was left of the scout team. Still, she wasn't the type to rush into things, even if she _really_ wanted to help those ponies. So she took a defensive stance, her legs splayed out, her torso low to the ground, and her claws crossed - ready to shift her position to lessen a blow. She observed the creature, waiting to see what it was capable of...

Re: The Sunless Realms (Pony Souls IC Thread)
"Go."
The Hollow quickly springs into action, dragging the heavy blade behind him as he quickly charges up to face the creature alongside their newfound wolf ally and Haskur. Sparks fly, and suddenly the blade seems to be suffused by a sickly black flame that clings like oil to the blade.
"May these sovereignless find purchase in thy blade and thy body... become thy strength of arm, and strength of bone, and strength of mind... let these souls of old become fuel to the fire..."
Balanced serenely on the Hollow's back, Umber utters a quiet prayer under her breath, and the Hollow's sword suddenly bursts to life with dancing flames, burning bright on the edge of the blade. The Hollow charges in, and slashes down at the creature with his greatsword, flames flickering and burning away at the beast.
Meanwhile, the stray sparks of fire surrounding Umber swirls up and darts towards Kabra'za, reinvigorating him with new life.

Ghreham nods, and decides to join in with the battle. The monster's spear-like appendages barely scratch Haskur's Iron, and as it retaliates against the Hollow, he digs his shields in and propels himself to the side. Turning, he raises one shield to catch the monster's wing, which scrapes off harmlessly. Haskur lets out a metallic chuckle from under his helmet.

Re: The Sunless Realms (Pony Souls IC Thread)
Once Haskur has made it abundantly obvious that he's the biggest annoyance of the group, the Monster rounds on him, striking down at him using its beak like a poleaxe. The strike connects not so much as a piercing attack but as a bludgeon, and the impact passes straight through Haskur's armor into his body.
Kabra'za's voodoo magic fizzles out suddenly, the Monstrosity's resilience seeming to ramp up in response to the increased severity of the curse.
Haskur takes 9 damage, ignoring resistance (but not half damage). He also suffers ongoing 2 (save ends) but that gets negated by his resist so whatever.

The Monstrosity saves against Ongoing Damage.
It's Kabra'za's turn!

Re: The Sunless Realms (Pony Souls IC Thread)
Kabra'za winced as he took a hit, the totem he had summoned being blown to pieces by the same attack. Pain might have been a reminder that he was alive, getting his heart pumping as adrenaline surged through his veins but that didn't mean he had to enjoy it. The fact that several sparks of fire landed on him to help heal his wounds didn't exactly improve the whole situation, but he had gone through worse in the past.
Feeling his curse start to weaver, the zebra growled as he pointed his hoof towards the creature again, barking commands in a unpony tongue to try and save it before the stupid bird cast it off for good. While he was focused on this, another totem rose from the ground in a sprouting of twisting roots, reforming the mediating cobra pony as it began to glow with the same dark magic as the first.

Re: The Sunless Realms (Pony Souls IC Thread)
The timberwolf drags itself back up onto its paws, and throws itself against the Stone Monster once more, managing to sink its jaws around the Monstrosity's neck. It clamps down, and the bird shrieks out in pain before lashing out with its wings, almost completely slicing one of the wolf's legs off, forcing it to temporarily retreat back to lick its wounds.
The monstrosity then rears back, and lets out an ear-splitting, piercing screech that echoes through the forest. Before the group's very eyes, the knife-like flints on on its wings seem to grow out, becoming sharper and more protective. It then settles into a more defensive stance, eying the group warily.

Hope Nexus frowned. Not only had she prepared for a strike that never came, but now this monster was acting defensively as well! And frankly... it looked like it would be better at it. She frowned. "Fine then..." Her voice was practically a snarl.
Despite her tone, she took no action as of yet... merely biding her time, waiting for an opportunity...

The Hollow backs up a little, cautious, and lowers Umber down to the ground.
"My faith will protect me," She says quietly, her head bowed in prayer.
The Hollow then goes up to the monstrosity again, and hacks away at it.

Tossing another orb of glowing soul into the air, Ghreham focuses, and molds that into a long, wicked sword which he sends hurtling at the monstrosity; meanwhile, the swarm of knives flock around the monstrosities, harrying it and preventing it from attacking anything else without suffering significant repercussions.

Reaction
The Monster hisses at the spectral blade, and swats at it with its wings, trying to destroy it.
Spectral Blade takes 19 damage.
Turn Proper
It then turns its attention to the knives, and starts carving through the swarm with its claws and wings and tail, flailing wildly to strike them down. Growling angrily it shakes off Kabra'za's magic again, though not before some of the stone of its skin flakes off from the damage.
Swarm of Knives takes 16 damage, ignoring resistance, and suffers ongoing 4.

"Taefan!" The dark mist rose from his body again as Kabra'za made to force his curse back on the overcome stone chicken. The magic lingered for a moment before fading without harm to himself, resulting in a breath of relief escaping him. Nearby, a second totem made of roots started to form by coiling together out of the ground: This time, it was in the shape of a pony with the head of a jackal that was seated in a meditative stance. Both cobra and jackal totems started to glow with the dark mist as they both acted in union to strengthen their masters curse.

Haskur reacts again, cutting in front of the hollow and taking another blow with his shield. Unfortunately, he cannot move to intercept the monster's subsequent attacks on the Griffon's summoned blades- fortunately, spectral objects were not something prone to dying. "You cannot kill me. You cannot kill them. You cannot kill at all!" He draws up, letting his shield arms go slack, opening his guard as if taunting the creature again...

Re: The Sunless Realms (Pony Souls IC Thread)
The stone monstrosity shrieks in fury as attack after attack rains down on it, its stone armor chipping and shattering in many places. Finally, the last straw is dropped as the timberwolf roars and clamps its jaws down into the tumorous stone crown atop the monstrosity's head.
The creature freezes for a moment, as the tumor cracks and fractures from the wound. Then, it crumbles, and the group is met with a horrible, ghastly sight - a single, bloodshot, slitted eye, blood-red and unblinking.
Haskur recognizes that eye. Those soulless eyes that turn victims to stone. Now they have returned, but even more steeped in darkness, even more evil.
The others recoil instinctively, shuddering away from that empty, mindlessly hungry gaze.
It seems to go mad with anger, and sets its gaze on the blades swarming around it. Despite not having eyes, the souls within those blades responds to the gaze, freezing in place and beginning to come undone. The spectral blade and Ghreham, too, are affected by the gaze, shaken to the core. They find themselves unable to directly face the beast and fight. If they do, they find their bodies weak, turning to stone, but if they don't, they run the risk of not hitting attack.
The timberwolf yelps, and staggers back, stunned by the sight of the eye - but not petrified.
The Dark-cursed Cockatrice is bloodied, and the Evil Eye is unleashed! After the Cockatrice is first bloodied, enemies must choose to be blinded or weakened before making the attack, until after the attack is resolved. If the attack does not deal damage, then the enemy is always blinded.
The Swarm of Knives are Petrified (save ends). Petrified creatures can take only one action per round (as though dazed), and if they take this action, they must roll twice and take the lower result on any saving throws made towards ending Petrified that round. Petrified creatures lose 5+X life at the start of their turn, with X being the number of times it has failed to save against petrified.
The Spectral Sward and Ghreham must make a saving throw. If they succeed, they are dazed until the end of their next turn and lose 10 life. If they fail, they are also Petrified (save ends).
