Fast As Lightning - Magic
By spending a Magic Point, a character of your race can move at a rate of 50-miles-per-second for the next minute. However, few of your race can endure a full minute at this pace. Moving at this blistering pace is incredibly dangerous; a character of your race takes 1D20 damage for every second spent at this speed.

Am I the only one who realizes that Fast As Lightning goes nearly 234 times the speed of sound?

Assuming a sound barrier of 770 miles per hour.

770 * 5280 feet per mile = 4065600 feet per hour.

4065600 / 3600 second per hour = 1129.333 feet per second.

50 mps * 5280 feet per mile = 264000 fps

264000 / 1129.333 = 233.766

if I recall correctly the old version allowed mach 5ish but my math may have been wrong

My group realized it, and promptly nerfed it into the ground.

I think they just nerfed it to mach 1 for sake of arguement.

...Still, explains why you take damage going that fast. You try going mach 233 without protective gear.

In mythology, hippogriffs are said to fly as fast as lightning.

In practice, it's one of those abillities that looks awe-inspiring... But really isn't much different than just giving the player a long-range teleport. We try to do that in the system a lot, make abilities that look amazing, exciting and unbelievably powerful... But are actually quite fair.

Big difference between this and a long range teleport.

Two words: battering ram.

Raggie in RoTWK did just that as an opening move on a boss. And it was AWESOME.

Just for reference though (and naturally, this can be overuled by the DM) but this was mentioned in the comment on the hippogriffs racial trait. It wasn't in Genetic Engineering yet, looks like we forgot to include the comment. It is now.

5) Neither utility talents nor racial features can be used in combat, except in the case of DM discretion. If you’re just trying to escape though, or are otherwise trying to avoid further confrontation without harmful engagement (such as trying to use the element of Kindness to talk someone out of fighting you) - go for it. Just check with your DM if you’re uncertain.

So yeah, don't try to ram the big bad at this speed or carry it into the sky, it won't end well. But escape? Go for it.


We did account for that to keep it fair... But hey, if you want to allow it, it's definitely going to be a ton of fun to ram big bads.

In my game, I've flavoured it so Hippogriffs and the hawklings from LL turn into bolts of lightning when they use that racial move (the only way I can see it working right in my mind). I brought that calculation up and a few others did as well when we were discussing it way back. I now have a shady NPC in LL that is the players' immediate supervisor. Every time, after giving the players their mission, he jumps out a window and uses that racial.
