Re: Khan of the Steppes
Cau'rha awoke to the sound ponies talking. He laid still awhile, not being an especially fast riser, until a dry sensation in his mouth decided for him, bringing him out of his modest shelter in time to see Silver Steele and Red leave.
"Where are they - oh, I see," he said a little groggily, after noticing the camp below them.
"Let me get a drink of water and I think I shall attempt some scrying..." he announced, ambling off towards the creek...
((What would the DC on scrying be, do you suppose?))

- OOC:
- Hmm, do I need to tell you that?
What I will tell you is that I'll let you have varying levels of success on the scrying, and how that will work: It will be a pretty low DC to get some faded reflections on the water that will require a Perception check to make out details, and as your number goes up the image will be clearer, and at some point you can make out other details like sound or smell and such. Your arcana roll will also determine how much you can manipulate the view: low you'll be confined to one or two viewing points, restricted to reflective objects like shiny things or other areas of water, and with higher rolls you can move your view about and be less restricted from points of view. I presume you'd be using it to view somewhere in the camp or nearby area?
I'll remember to add in your Heart of Courage if it could be used to bump you up to a category with DC 30 or above

Re: Khan of the Steppes
((Okay, that works. Although, most of that seems like it should be in the OOC thread.))
Having discovered a small creek, Cau'rha took a long draught to quench his throat. He dug at the ground for a while in order to form a sort of small pool. Then, he drew a circle around it, large enough for him to lay down beside it, and stared into the pool as he inhaled deeply, absorbing the familiar scents of the lost souls, hoping to find a spirit of visions...

- OOC:
- Oops, you're right! Got a bit confused there- was responding because you asked that here. Put an OOC spoiler bracket around that so it doesn't take up space at least.
- Cau'rha's Scrying:
- Cau'rha manages to find the sort of spirit he's looking for, and his reflection disappears from the pool as the water goes dark. a speck of faint light (more like less darkness) appears and grows larger, until the range of vision suddenly expands and Cau'rha can see the camp. The image is still not as clear as it would be in person, but Cau'rha can see clearly enough. He even spots Silver Steele sneaking around, taking a look at the camp and a couple of the bags. He sees what she sees- the campfire, the simple tents, the camels talking and arguing, the bags and their contents, and the chests (one of which seems to be the starting point for this vision, from the shape of the keyhole). The scrying pool is fairly stable, and will continue showing Cau'rah this view unless disturbed.
Re: Khan of the Steppes
Cau'rha gazed around at the camels, the merchants, and other such things, and found he couldn't remember anything about them...
He stared a little harder, trying to determine if there might be any trouble...

Not sure which it is? Doesn't matter, you see.

I mean Perception! 'cause Insight and Perception are the same thing, right?
To try and determine if and how dangerous they might prove to be, and therefore how soonCau'rhathe party would have to speed down to help.

Re: Khan of the Steppes
- Spoiler:
- Caden2112: Oh oops, didn't notice you said Steele was going back to the others after checking the bags... and here I was waiting for you to post something else! Unless you are sticking around the camp.
Cau'rha watches as Silver leaves the bags and makes her way back to the rest of the group. The camels still seem oblivious to anything going on around them- and appear to be going to sleep. Cau'rha can't imagine the camels could be very dangerous- they didn't appear to have any weapons (unless they were in the hardly accessible locked chests), and seemed to not be very cautious in setting up their camp and its obvious bonfire. Red also returns.
"Didn't see much exciting. Camels lying down. Sad tents. Big fire."

Eventually Steele snuck back to the others, straightening up a bit. "Well, I recognize them. They were wearing outfits closer to what you'd see around here at the meet, though...Unless they're going to a lot of effort to hide being hostile, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt...If I'm wrong, well, we can handle that if it comes to it." She looked back at the camp, thinking for a moment as she finished her report, letting her staff lean against her shoulder for now.

"Agreed," the shaman said, having returned to hear Steele's report. "They might also have an idea as to what's ahead, and that would be helpful to know. Personally, I have never been this far south before."

Well, don't everyone just bound away at once, the shaman thought to himself, seeing that no one was especially eager to go as he started down the hill and towards the merchant's camp...

Re: Khan of the Steppes
You all make your way to the camels' camp. As you approach, it appears the camels have just noticed you and are scrambling to get up. Once you arrive, they greet you in turn.
"Ah, welcome you to our camp fellow travelers" says the one-humped camel.
"Please partake of our hospitality as honored guests." says the two-humped
"Sit you down please by the fire. Would care you for some warm beverages? Have I with me some fine cafe from my homeland"
"Oh no, I insist you drink some of my tea instead."
"Allow you for me to introduce my companion, merchant Zheng of Bactria"
"And that is merchant Ibn of the Dromedary Caliphate"
They have a couple of pots over the fire and a few fine cups set out.

"Thank you for your hospitality," Cau'rha replied, seating himself across from them. "I am Cau'rha, of the LaMancha tribe. And that," he continued, gesturing at the cups, "Are very fine, but you'll excuse me if I use my own goblet. It has some... personal value."
He took a deep, pronounced breath, and forced it out into a whistle. The air from his mouth swirled into the form of a simple, wooden goblet with a peculiar symbol on it...
"There we are," he said, admiring the simple container. "If you don't mind?" He held it out to be filled.

Re: Khan of the Steppes
Zane smiles at the camel and dromedary and lets down his yurt, before finding a seat near Cau'rha. He is impressed by the goat's cup summoning prowess.
"It is a pleasure to meet you, a merchant pair; I am a simple Mist Tail called by Zane.
Red is our companion with wing in the air; the others prefer bring forth their own name."
Zane nods toward Red, wherever he is, when he references the eagle.

- Protocol?:
- What's the proper protocol here? I, not being either a pony or a traveler on the steppes, am not sure and would like Zane to act in the correct manner.
More specifically, how do 2 traveling groups typically interact when they meet on the steppes? Do we set up camp near them? Or is that a social faux pas, and we should give them some space? Are we supposed to return their generosity somehow, maybe with some trading or something?
I'd like to burn a Bridle Gossip on this, if the rhymes are okay. I don't foresee any up and coming necessary rolls that I'll need to burn before it refills. 3/6 uses remain for the day.
Streetwise, if necessary: 1d20 + 12 + 1 = 2810 515 + 12 + 1
If the rhyme's not relevant enough, that's just a 23 then. (10 was the first roll)

Anemone shakes her head at the pair giving our their real names to merchants while they are trying to evade pursuers. Deciding that the damage is already done she says, "I am Anemone Gracehoof of Khan Udos. I have heard of this cafe but, never had the opportunity, so I will accept your offer Ibn of the Dromedary Caliphate. No offense to your companion's offer, which I would accept just as readily."

Re: Khan of the Steppes
"Well that was pretty amazing," Book Smart said quietly as he sat down next to Cau'rha, looking at the goblet with interest.
Completely oblivious to any need for secrecy, Book turned to the camels and introduced himself. "I'm called Book Smart, of the Dark Water tribe. We're known for our food and drink, though I only have one dish that I've come up with, so far." Looking thoughtful, he paused for a moment. "Well, that's worked out, anyway."

- History:
- What are Bactria and the Caliphate like? What sorts of attitudes might they hold for strange travelers? Book Smart has possibly heard stories of these lands, so let's find out:
History: d20 + 20 + 1 = 19 + 20 + 1 = 40
...wow! Well, not sure how important it is, but he's probably heard something about them. So close to a critical, too...

Re: Khan of the Steppes
Silver hurried after the others, bowing slightly at the introductions and listening...Had everyone gone crazy...? Well, she supposed these two were decent enough sorts, but it was more their enemy she was worried about. "Silver Steele, Khan Udos as well..." She thought for a moment, a bit surprised by their generosity..."It's...Good to meet both of you. I think...I'll try the tea, myself, thank you..."

"Very well, suit yourself..." Zheng says, although cuts off as he sees Cau'rha magically produce a cup. He pauses a moment staring before taking one of the kettles off of the fire and pouring some tea into the cup, as well into the cups set out for Zane, Book Smart, Steele, and Sleipnir. "For those of you who expressed no preference I will give tea, I believe it will suit your tastes better as its source is nearer." He looks at the other camel as he says this.
"Ah, but more reason have they to drink them some exotic cafe from my land! Have at least one of you of true taste, drink Anenome Gracehoof from the fine 'wine of the bean'!"
The two camels look at each other at the mention of Udus Khan.
"Is not strange group from different clans travel together? Not heard have I such things before."
"Unusual yes, and yet here we are, camels of different nations with a common purpose. Perhaps it is no different."

- Zane, Protocol:
- Your Bridle Gossip use is definitely fine, though personally I'm not a huge fan of near rhymes.
You're always rhyming in character even when not using it, so you can generally assume you can.
Protocol when two groups meet is generally for one to offer the other their camp space, and some food or beverages (as the camels have done, since you're all the ones who wandered into their camp). At this point it is expected to stay, talk, and accept any food or gift offered. It would not be rude to offer such in return- talk of trade would normally be rude to other steppe groups without first spending at least one night first, but as these are foreign merchants they would probably be perfectly happy with this.
It is considered unforgivable to attack or harm (through poison or other means) one's host or guests, allowing strangers to feel comfortable with proximity to each other without fearing a sneak attack from within one's own camp. It is not unheard of for such things to happen, but usually warriors or even the spirits themselves will track down and punish any who break this unwritten law.
You can tell that the merchants are familiar with these practices from their travels through the area, and are trying very hard to follow them in order to follow local custom.
- Book Smart, History:
- ... That's a big number. I'll put some info here, If it's relevant later and I come up with more things you should know I'll try to remember your check here. If you had any specific questions, I might be able to answer them too. Here we go... time for infodump of dubious importance, enjoy!
Bactria is a small kingdom to the southeast, across the desert and between the steppe and the great "Middle Empire", as they call themselves. Merchants come from Bactria with goods from there, or more often the Middle Empire, the most significant export being fine silks. Bactrians are the foreigners most familiar to the steppe peoples, and are the basis for what knowledge there is about those with a sedentary lifestyle. The Bactrians grow food in great fields along rivers, construct buildings of stone and are known to have walls around their largest couple cities, and are the source of the more peculiar manufactured goods in the form of fine tools or weapons that make their way to the steppe. Occasional raids have brought back great spoils, but at great risk- the military tactics of the foreigners are completely alien to those of the steppes, and not every band of warriors seeking glory by attacking the foreigners has returned. A khan once led a very mighty clan to the very walls of the Bactrian capitol, before a compliment of a million soldiers from the Middle Empire came and destroyed him, his clan, and even their names (causing him to become known only as "the forgotten Khan"). It is an old tale, and thus of uncertain accuracy, but is an excellent cautionary tale to overeager warriors. The Bactrians themselves, and even the Middle Kingdom have never sent military expeditions across the desert.
The caliphate is less well known on the steppe, as it is a more distant land in the west. There are a large number of small kingdoms along the way, whose culture bridges the gap between Steppe and Foreigners to different degrees- semi-permanent settlements dot the oases along the desert trade routes, with some wandering to allow pastures and water sources to replenish. The Caliphate is supposedly a very holy place, and its leader the Caliph presides not only over the nation but over the spiritual affairs of the Tawhid religion as a whole- which is apparently followed by many, including a very few on the steppe, and more and more as one travels east. Strange spices are the most common good from the Caliphate, although very occasionally metals of the highest quality make their way to the steppe. Swords from the Caliphate are considered indestructible, and capable of ridiculous feats of fine cutting, such as splitting a hair. While this is almost certainly hyperbole they are definitely finer than any other blades on the steppe. The only sword known to currently exist on the steppe is in the possession of Shale Khan, the Shaman Khan of Sunstone, and is said to shine in the sun, with ripples through it as though it were molten metal given shape. It is only used for ceremonial purposes and is said to have never shed blood.
Re: Khan of the Steppes
Cau'rha listened quietly to the camels as the discussed the peculiarity of times. He had never been much for small talk, and simply sat drinking his tea. It was a spicy brew, not entirely unlike the falfhissi that his tribe made (though without the inebriating properties, sadly.) However, his cup being a fairly small one, he soon found it emptied.
"Thank you for your hospitality," he stated in a formal tone, signalling his part of the day was next. "If you'll excuse me a moment," the shaman said politely, taking his staff in hoof towards the edge of camp.
Starting at the northern end, he stuck his staff into the ground, and began tracing a Ritual Circle...
"Fasat Muth La luthat merz, Fasat Muth La urat suth... Fasat Muth La luthat merz, Fasat Muth La urat suth..." He muttered quietly, slowly, and repetitively, taking great care to pronounce the prayer with the utmost sincerity, while also making sure he was making a circle, and not an oval or (spirits spare him!) a square.
"Shashav, Muth La," he finished the prayer as he closed the circle.

- Arcana:
As we have discussed before, spirits like circle-shapes. Now, a small circle is mostly just flavor... but a circle this big is gonna mean something, namely that spiritualizing (Arcana checks, mine or anyone else's) within or near it is easier than normal. And therefore requires a Magecraft check.

Unable to decide which exotic drink to sample, Book Smart sat fidgeting while Cau'rha finished his prayer. After the shaman finished, Book said to the camels, "Well, actually, I'd like to try both! It's really amazing to meet someone from both the Caliphate and Bactria traveling together. I mean, your homelands are in almost opposite directions from here, aren't they? I'd love to trade stories. I have so many questions I could ask! Do Bactrian cities really have giant walls around them? Are Caliphate swords really unbreakable? What are you two doing together out here?"
He paused, breathless, for a moment. "Oh! And, on a more personal note, have you ever met any creatures called changelings?"

"I have not heard of them. What are changelings?" he asked, helping himself to more of the tea.
