So far as Cheese can tell, it's no different from a normal kitten.

The kitten gives Cheese its best "You've got to be kidding me" look.

Zebulon turns the stove back on and starts warming a metal bar against it. Once it's sufficiently heated, he places the bar against the mushroom.

After a moment of thinking, Zebulon manages to identify the particular smoky scent that still lingers in the area: dragon smoke.

While remaining undetected, Kal picks up a couple of snippets from the duo.

"So, where's da boss again?"

"'E said 'e'd meet us there."

Before Kal can pick up more, though, the duo reach the mines and walk in without a care. The mines are unremarkable, although the area seems relatively undisturbed. Looker is about to enter the cave as well, although he seems to have the sense to let them move on a short distance first.

Zebulon carefully puts the metal bar aside, wrapping up the heated end so nothing catches fire.

"You're not going to like what I must say," said Zebulon. "A dragon's smoke hangs in the air today."

"Remember to breathe normally, feline," advised Zebulon. "And stay within the cleanest air you can."

Zebulon then heads out of the Roach Motel.

The kitten promptly gets up and follows Zebulon.

As Zebulon walks, he runs into a crowd of ponies, who all proceed to start yelling questions at him, mostly variants on "What caused the fire?", "Is anypony hurt?", and "Did you set the fire?"

"Calm. Calm. Everything is okay inside. Looks like it was just a small grease fire. A lot of smoke, but no harm done. We've aired out the hotel and it should be safe to go back inside.

Zebulon found himself conflicted. On the one hand, honesty was a virtue, and he could have explained the exact cause of the fire - or rather the smoke. But then what? The knowledge that the fire was dragon-made would just cause more panic. Panic leads to injuries more severe than being caught in smoke, and Zebulon didn't have the supplies or the manpower to deal with the entire injured population of Dodge Junction. Besides, Dextor was only a child. To call him out in front of an entire town, call him a criminal... he didn't deserve any of that.

Maybe it was better to keep silent and go with Cheese's story. More peaceful that way.

"A grease fire is a mere accident," said Zebulon. "Whoever did it did not mean to harm. I was three blocks away and saw the flash. My friend here can attest to where I was."

Several of the ponies drifted away, save for one little filly who had picked up and hugged the kitten, apparently oblivious to the kitten's attempts to wriggle free and/or scratch her. "So cuuuute!"

"MROW!" protested the kitten.

Vague enough that it could just casual banter between 2 ponies late for work, or also plans for something more sinister. I suppose it's possible that the vigilante is actually a collaboration of various ponies trying to clean up their town in the only way they know how. They'd display some signs of hostility towards the sheriff if so, or at least call him incompetent. Eh, speculation for now, I'll need to get some concrete evidence before I call anyone out though.
