Call of Colthulhu: Team Two's Adventures

Post  AleneShazam on Sun Jul 19, 2015 5:28 am

The annual Baltimare’s Conference of Higher Education is occurring, and experts from across the East Coast are congregating in the Baltimare Institute of Higher Education to share their discoveries. The topic of the year is, of course, the mass coma phenomena that occurred a couple of months ago. Even the Princesses have no idea how it happened, and though they are making efforts into uncovering the reason for this, taking care of the comatose ponies take precedence. Experts around Equestria, however, have no such obligations and have torn into the situation with gusto. In spite of this enthusiasm, the best they managed to uncover is that the ponies suffered from intense psychic backlash, but the source still eludes them.

It is the second day of the conference, the day which the experts reveal the practical applications of their research to the general public and also open themselves up for interviews and Q&A. The school grounds of Institute of Higher Education are busy with students, experts and those curious members of the public who wish to learn more of the innovations of the year.

The crowds appear to be thinning out after an eventful morning, as hungry ponies head off for some lunch. Most of the experts have left their stalls and began mingling, sharing stories and making friendly small talk.

A griffon appears to be handing out sweets and treats to foals and any others who wanted food, basking in their gratitude and enjoying fully the attention he is receiving from the children. He smiles and shoos away a little griffon chick who is apparently so fond of his homemade treats that she is coming back for seconds, thirds, and now fourths. As he looks at the griffon scamper off to play with her friends, he feels an unfamiliar presence and swings around to find a pony, wearing a hoodie with the hood drawn up, standing just a few feet away from him. The pony almost appeared out of nowhere, given how sudden the appearance was.

the pony mutters, fishing a sheet of paper out of a pocket and letting it drop in front of Kunolf. On the piece of paper, in big bold lettering, are . Then the pony is gone, almost disappearing into nowhere.

On the other side of the conference area, clearly visible amongst the crowd, is a crystal pony giving a speech on the influences of crystal magic on the latent psychic field of Equestria, and her theories on how it might be the solution to the mass coma crisis. As she wraps up the speech, she notices how a single pony stands out from the rest. A hooded pony, standing a little ways off from the main crowd, stares out at her from under a hood. The pony holds up a sheet of paper, very obviously aimed at her, and lets it slip off the hoof onto the ground. As soon as the crowd disperses, Starglass can see that on the sheet of paper is a message written in dark crimson ink, ""

Away from the commotion, the pegasus Eaglesong massages her temples to stave off an oncoming migraine. She was tasked to watch over a stall that her colleague and mentor Sterile Scalpel was supposed to tend. Usually this would be fine, but Scalpel was gone for almost an hour now and Eaglesong wanted to go for some lunch after a long morning. After the long wait, Eaglesong finally decided to go off and find Scalpel, who was apparently off to a meeting with one Starglass about ways to cure the coma phenomena. As she understands, Starglass is the only crystal pony to attend the conference... which makes her very easy to track. A few well placed questions, and she could probably locate the pony.

It would've been a most pleasant conference, weren't the topic so grave.

Once again did Starglass found herself vying to reach out to her audience, bearing in mind that what didn't get to bloom on the north's soil, could have a chance to develop here. Hence, she put heart into her words. Having finished, she pondered briefly whether that have been easier than yesterday, considering the experience she gained from facing the serious and inquiring officials... or rather more difficult, as rising up to the spirits while repeating the same statements, had come into question.

Still, little to assess the results by, as the audience dispersed, few questions asked. What should have been done, has been done. Months' worth labour for these short moments of enlightement were yet to see twice as much before bearing fruit, perhaps. That was the science's way. At the very least, interest from public had been shown, hence Starglass held hopes for the future.

It was time to step off the podium and give way to the next pony to hold a panel in this conference area. Starglass did not hestitate to do so. There were yet things she was meant to take care of, were they to meet their ends today. As her thought swirled around, it came to her attention what she neglected during her speech, as to not lose track of what was she dealing with. Particulary, a pony of a rather vague appearance and behaviour, now nowhere to be found. Truly, what did it hope to convey? As the Crystal Pony trotted off towards the distant lunch stalls, she was stopped in her tracks. Oddly enough, by an inanimate object. Namely, a sheet of paper, lying on the ground, with just some parenthesis engraved - done so with the usage of some peculiar ink as well. Who's there to use crimson nowadays? Wait a second; was that the same piece as the one dropped by the mysterious figure?

Upon closer inspection, the mare confirmed there was no mistaking about that. Nonetheless, the whole matter smelled fishy. As Starglass held up the piece of paper with her muzzle slightly scrunched - wondering whether to throw it away in the garbage - it dawned upon her that there could've been some meaning behind it... and since she was present here as one of the specialists in the vast field of arcana, perhaps she was expected to check for more than meets the eye?

Having come to that conclusion, Starglass takes a moment to examine the object with her magic sense.

Rolling arcana, +18 modifier.

It was only upon closer inspection that Starglass did perceive the words inscribed upon the sheet of paper. Having noticed and read those, the mare reflected upon the whole situation. It was not an everyday occurance - usually did the interested state their suggestions openly... still, if anyone were to believe solution could've been found - even more so, at such short notice... The Crystal Pony found it hard it believe, yet still kept in mind what was her reason for being here nonetheless. Since it seemed kind of suspicious, Starglass decided to mention to the ones coordinating the events' time and schedule where to look for her, just in case. Safety reasons. Vaguely enough though, as it was still supposed to be a private talk. Then, having grabbed a snack to keep her going for what could possibly - for good or bad - turn out to become a serious debate. Having memorized the message, she didn't neglect to tear apart and throw out the sheet of paper along the way in a place suited for that.

After the strange Pony Disapears, Kunolf takes the piece of paper, tells everyone around him that he needs to get some more snacks and treats and then goes of to a more private area, before he
examines the papr more closely, to see if any messages are hidden on it.

After reading and Memorising any and all hidden messages he could find, Kunolf burns the paper and sighes, before getting some more snacks and heads over to the one Crystalpony he could clearly see when the figure approached him. When he reaches the Pony in Question Kunolf tires to begin a Conversation: "Hello madam, I only caught parts of your speach but what I heard sounded very impressiv, my name is Kunolf Leifson I´m here for catering, would you like a sandwich or maybe a muffin?"

Upon being greeted by the catering griffon, Starglass wondered whether she should account this as a nice, little coincidence or rather give credit to the staff's discipline and watchful eye when it came to seeking out delegates in need of a pick-me-up - considering she was just about to get something to eat before heading off.

"Greetings, sir... and, why, thank you. It's good to know that, considering the majority of the crowd's been hasty in their eagerness to participate in other revelations of the day. I only hope it helps them ascertain a new spin on the matter..." - the Crystal Pony comments, as to show a bit of gratitude, hiding that, in fact, she could've sensed the audience's emotional state concerning her speech, if she wished to... She didn't need to, though. Her role was informative, not expressive and she was to leave them with things to digest for a while, no matter their attitude - since, having come here, they were most probably prepared for the serious topic anyway - "I'm known as Starglass and, may i say, mister Leifson, you have quite the intuition when it comes to fishing out hungry ponies" - having said that, she winks at the griffin in a friendly manner - "I was just about to have a go at a local cuisine after that speech of mine... and as it seems i'll need to be on my way soon, i think those sandwiches may just be spot-on. May i ask what kinds of fillings are there on the buffet?"

Eaglesong hated these conventions. Mind you, this was her first, but it was making a terrible impression. There were too many ponies, and too much noise, and worst of all, no flying in the convention center. Apparently in the crush of ponies, pegasi were sometimes left without room to land, and the Baltimare Convention Center in particular was infamous for the year when several pegasi had collapsed from exhaustion and fallen out of the air. Now flying in the center was banned during large gatherings like this. But this was a medical conference! There was literally no better gathering of triage experts in the world right now! It made it all the worse that her vest was completely unsuited to the heat, and having to look for a pony from the ground only intensified things. Her feathers thoroughly ruffled, she shouldered her way towards the only pony around she vaguely recognized: the crystal pony who Sterile Scalpel had been listening to. Sterile Scalpel would undoubtedly have had questions for the lecturer, and he was well known for a predilection to ramble and volunteer unnecessary details (such as, hopefully, where he was eating lunch). "Hey!" She calls, shouldering through the crowd towards her mark and finally arriving next to her. "Hi." She says breathlessly. "I'm Eaglesong*pant*pant*and I'm wondering if you've seen Sterile Scalpel?"

The Crystal Pony eyed both vigorously and thoroughly the collection presented by the newly met Griffin.

"I think i'll go for some daisies" - decided aloud Starglass, letting herself take away gently one of the sandwiches with the filling mentioned - "However, if you don't mind me snatching you for but a moment more, i'd gladly top that with some honey... don't wanna risk surfing through the crowd in search of another sandwich dealer or running around with two at once while looking uncouth. I'm sure you understand" - the mare states her reasons half-jokingly - "Would that be a problem? I'd understand if you need to say 'no' - with all the places staff needs to be at, of course" - she adds the last sentence as to calm the food server, just in case her request put this so-called Kunolf into a cumbersome situation, considering it might have had orders to evenly distribute his time among the Institute's guests.

Meanwhile, something of less edible nature had caught the attention of the crystal mare... and probably not only her, as the one braving the crowd towards Starglass used a loud exclamation, yet stated her addressee only after arriving by the Crystal Pony's side... my, what a heart-breaking visage presented a Pegasus, forced to stay on the ground in such conditions due to legal regulations... Starglass's expression betrayed sympathy towards one abiding such a strict rule. She hardly had to concentrate in order to feel the Pegasus mare's emotions, as they were plainly visible on her face.

"Starglass. Please take a rest, miss Eaglesong, you look as terrible as one engaged in a peaceful conference could get" - Starglass, having directed these words in a soothing tone towards Eaglesong, turned towards Kunolf - "Mister Leifson, care to fetch a glass of water for this mare, please?" - only then, after taking care of the Pegasus's well-being, did she take into consideration its pupose for coming here - "Sterile Scalpel, you ask? Let me think..."

She tries to remember whether she has spoken with such an individual during the Conference... and if not, if she even remotely recognized a stallion going by this name during her time spent here.

Starglass recalls talking to a unicorn called Sterile Scalpel in the round of speeches she made before the one she did just now. He was quite helpful with the medical side of the crisis, even offering to let her see if she can learn anything new if she could be in close contact with the patients. Before he left for reasons Starglass can't quite remember, he handed her a card which had the number for some random meeting room, apparently where him and a couple of other medical experts were discussing their experiences regarding the crisis. They welcomed her to join them, said her expertise on accessing the empathetic layer of the pony mind could be the key to waking the comatose ponies up. She politely refused then, since she still had a few theories to get through, but now that she was done, she was free to do what she saw fit.

to the Inquiry of the Crystal mare, Kunolf replies: "It´s no Problem at all Mrs" He then takes of one half of a Honeysandwich and combines it with half a Daisy sandwich. "Here you go"

As he notices the poor Pegasus mare, he looks through the pouches he carries and, inding a bottle of water in the Last one he Checks, he gives it to the Pegasus saying "here Mrs Eaglesong I think you could need this" after that Kunolf tries to remeber if he has seen a pony named Sterile Scalpel recently.

"Thank you." Eaglesong says, downing about a fourth of the water bottle in one go. Reasonably recomposed, she straightens. "So, to elaborate: I'm doing Scalps a favor today, and he took that as an invitation to leave me alone at his booth for several hours. The last I heard of him, he was visiting your speech, so i was wondering if you had any information about his whereabouts."

Re: Call of Colthulhu: Team Two's Adventures

The name mentioned by the Pegasus mare left the aftertaste of unfinished business upon the Crystal Pony's lips... of which a certain card turned out to be a distinct reminder.

"You're in luck, miss Eaglesong" - having fished out the right identity from her memory, Starglass is content to announce - "Not only do i recall a stallion going by such title, i also know where to look for him."

The crystal mare weighed her current options. Sure, she could give the mysterious stranger a chance... but in the message she received from it, there was no time precised. In a way, it was a request, most probably accounting whatever official business Starglass had yet to attend. Moreover, the medical experts' meeting was happening as of now, whereas the former would not start without her. Considering the limited time so many specialists could gather together to work for common good as well as the fact that it seemed as the more credible and government-approved way of progressing with the crisis, it seemed a valid choice to pick that over some uncertainty. Not to mention that the Pegasus standing before her was most probably headed in the same direction at the very moment... were she to face Sterile Scalpel in her current emotional state, she could, willingly or not, ignite a commotion distracting enough for the said medical expert to become absent - be it by body or mind - during an important session. Hence, it seemed all the wiser decision to encompany the one seeking him now. Perhaps she could amount to stifle her feelings enough as to prevent an unpleasant outcome...

"Actually, i'm inclined to meet him myself. Shall we seek him out together then?" - Starglass proposed gently.

Having accepted with gratitude the hybrid sandwich, the Crystal Pony inquired of the Griffin:

"Mister Leifson. Would it be going over the border of your staff responsibilities if i asked you to point us the way towards this meeting room?" - as she said, she took out the card with the aforemnetioned one's number - "While the main conference areas are easy to keep track of, the rest is but a maze... also, if it's sharing the wonders of your buffet you're worried about, i'm pretty sure the ones delegating where we're headed could probably also do with a snack or two, were they delivered to them. Especially gladly, if i may risk saying that, considering the intensity of some of the discussions."

Eaglesong nods at the suggestion of concerted travel, appreciating the sudden laps in vociferousness. "Sounds fine. If you tell me where we're going, I can probably get us there. I know this building quite well." Nevermind that she knew that from studying Blueprints (available on request in the Baltimare City Hall) of the building and not from any experience walking through it.

When he´s asked if he could lead the mares to the meeting room indicated Kunolf replies:"It would be my pleasure to escort a nice mare like you, I will just take my lunch break now".
While leading the two to their destinations, he wonders who that pony was that told him to watch out for the Crystal pony, and how he knew that Number on the paper.

While listening, the crystal mare takes her time to finally sink her teeth into the appetizingly looking sandwiches she received from the Griffin. Both the one stuffed with daisies as well as the one coated with honey tasted, as she may' ve expected, slightly different than the ones she's used to come by in the north. Must've been the difference of the soil the plants have been cultivated upon... that being said, they didn't taste half bad. In fact, they were sweet, stuffing and generally very welcome. A perfect mid-meal before the still distant dinner time. Having finished, Starglass refers to Kunolf first:

"Why, thank you, kind sir. I only hope we don't take up too much of your time. Wouldn't bear the thought of a food provider going around hungry himself... though since you're taking a break anyway, mister Leifson, mind me asking - what's the reason for a Griffin like you catering to ponies on this conference? Do you happen to live nearby or is it that you've been interested in the topics mentioned and decided to use the opportunity to share work with quenching thirst for knowledge?"

The Crystal Pony follows the lead of the only male of the trio, not neglecting to devote time to the Pegasus in the meantime:

"I believe you, miss Eaglesong, that in time you'd find the way. However, it seems like we're a both a bit pressed for time, so i hope you don't mind relying on someone knowing for sure? Let us enjoy the trot while we're at it, shall we? Please, share with me - just what kind of booth was it that you've been tasked with watching over? I'm guessing it's been in at least some way acquainted with Mr. Sterile' s field of study... does it mean you happen to be acquainted with it, by any chance?" - Starglass, in having the Griffin lead the way, hoped to take Eaglesong's mind at least partially off the one who's seemingly abandoned her - which would be harder, were she actively seeking him. In attempting that, she wished to not only have the Pegasus relax a bit, but also grasp her situation a little, were she forced to act as a mediator between the two.

"well to answer your last question first, I´m here in part because I was interested in some of the topics discussed, but also because they needed somepony with some experience with catering and such and I could use the money after traveling here." While the Griffon explains this he has a thought full look on his face, as he´s thinking about telling the mares why he´s traveling. Deciding against it he continues. "And don´t worry, I really don´t mind helping others during my break, after all I´ll surely have another opportunity to get something to eat." He then chuckles to himself, "After all, how stupid would a cook be to starve in a Kitchen he cooks in"

Eaglesong wasn't really certain what to make of the pony before her. "Scalps' work has always been a bit of an oddity." On the one hand, everything about her radiated compassion and goodwill. "He used to be leading the charge in how brain chemistry changes after traumatic events, but when his wife died falling down a flight of stairs he requested a shift to hands-on work in the ER." On the other hand, she seemed to pity Eaglesong, which was an utter waste of time and energy. "Scalps being Scalps, it didn't take him long to become the go-to pony for first-response--that's short-hand that encompasses triage, treatment, and basically giving orders while tending to your own duties. By the time I got to Don Clopkins, he was basically a living legend." Today had been irritable, but it didn't even qualify as exhausting, or any other descriptor that might put her in a pitiable position. "Like most Medical Schools, Don Clopkins requires a mentor for your later years, and being the headstrong pony I was (am) once I knew he was the best of the trauma ward I wanted him and only him as my mentor. It took some arguing, but eventually he took me on and taught me...damned near everything." And really, Eaglesong just hated to be pitied. She hadn't been worthy of pity in a long time, and could think of plenty of ponies it was better spent on. "Of course, with the onset of the mass comas, his old research came back into vogue, so he was invited here. We parted ways quite recently, so when he needed help he thought of me." It wasn't a case of mixed signals. Starglass just rubbed her the wrong way, despite being nothing but pleasant. It happened sometimes.

Re: Call of Colthulhu: Team Two's Adventures

Post  Terrestial on Tue Jul 21, 2015 7:46 pm

Since Starglass's half-joking remark made when Eaglesong joined them, the Pegasus seemed to have recomposed. It was a good thing, since the heart-breaking looks of her have had the Crystal Pony vying between struggling against giving out a "daaw" and a snicker ever since. By Crystal Heart - those huge wings of her, all ruffled up from braving the crowd... How could one not feel sympathy towards such an adorably irritated puff of fluffy feathers?

"An oddity? If that's some credit being given where it's due without diminishing one's credibility, i'd say that's a little hope-raising - cosidering what an unnatural situation we're dealing with. Being the sensible pony Mr. Sterile appeared to be, i wonder whether he'd call it that himself, after what a tangled path he'd followed throughout his career."

During their journey, the Crystal Pony answered sporadically, speaking up mostly in short burst of words, as to not disrupt the flow of the expanded version of the story Eaglesong decided to share with her.

Starglass took her time, listening to her companion patiently. It was said that talking about oneself comes to ponies most naturally - and as such, it could probably be taken as a good omen that the Pegasus decided to include her own strand of life while indulging in the story. As one related via work to Sterile Scalpel, this mare was just a mere little component brushing against the medical experts' meeting gear - one of the many moving the mass coma cure-seeking machine. Specifically the one, which Starglass perceived when looking upon who she was holding a conversation with. Even bearing seemingly so little significance, this component could make a vital difference, and as such, it was worth oiling up. In other words, it was to be given the Crystal Pony's attention.

Even with her natural affinity towards relationships not coming into question.

During whole of Eaglesong's speech it was just once that Starglass's facial expression faltered a little - and that was when the Pegasus mentioned the tragic incident which happened to Sterile Scalpel's wife.
It was not the mentioning of death that made her flinch though. To blame was the unfortunate inclusion of the trigger word in the sentence concerning this particular topic. The Crystal Pony's gaze became a little unfocused for just a moment, the volume of her voice diminishing as she progressed:

"Stairs... at least he wasn't made to push her himself... and lick off her remnants..."

She reflected upon herself after that though. She shook her head, same gentle smile appearing on her muzzle, her voice clear and strong, enthusiastic even:

"Aaah, Don Clopkins! I remember visiting it once. The dean was a really nice pony - showed me around after a conference we both attended. Shame half his family died due to internal acidification mishap. I wonder if their bloodline got preserved; his kids were quite the handsome colts - at least before the magic reached their faces... gotta say how vast the improvements on unicorn-specific treatment have been made are one of the things you get to appreciate this millenium."

She paused again for some time, allowing Eaglesong to go on about her past with the mentor. It sounded as though she had quite a bit of respect for him, even if clouded by the current state of affairs between them. The mare, despite being still young, claimed to have been taught nearly everything by a so-called living legend. Starglass was certain that she didn't see this Eaglesong during any of the important conferences she'd partook in during those two days... yet her competences suggested she could be here, doing more than just paying off a debt.

"You aren't here just to watch over a stall, are you, miss Eaglesong?" - asked the Crystal Pony in a puzzling tone - "Mind me asking what you'd hoped yet to achieve this day?"

She'd wanted to ask already whether she could help her with anything that she were wishing of Mr. Sterile... yet she understood that she was about to get to know that soon anyway...

Meanwhile, there was also a certain Griffin, which required her attention as well:

"Since i haven't heard of exotic dishes around here and money's involved as a valid factor, then if i'm understanding it correctly then, mister Leifson, you've graced this place with a visit from afar, haven't you? I'm guessing you must be quite the adept Griffin for the conference organisers to pick you to cater to what's a mostly pony conference - as candidates from around here must've been plenty. Is equestrian your speciality, by any chance?" - seeing Kunolf chuckle, Starglass responds in kind, if only mildly - "Agreed... mm, so you're a cook as well, mister Leifson? Are the higher-ups that demanding of their staff as to have you run around with your meals or is it that you're serving double time of your own will?"

She ponders for a moment, then adds more slowly, with a greater dose of consideration:

"Mister Leifson... Has your interest in the topics discussed been, by any chance, related to the psychic backlash, reaching outside the borders of Equestria?"

"Actually, I don´t cook at this venue, but I work at a restaurant in my hometown normally."Kunolf replies then he continues hastily, " and before you ask, its a small town just barely part of Equestria geographical, you probably never heard of it". As the Crystalpony asked him another Question, he simply repleis. "As I said my hometown is part of Equestria so no. I´m here because one of my regular patrons colapsed one evening out of the blue and I hoped to learn somethign about his condition here."

Eaglesong squints a little at the bloody interlude. It was unsettling, but things seemed to solidify again shortly thereafter. She shrugs at the probing question. "No particular goals. I mean, I wouldn't have been able to get through the door if it weren't for Scalps, so it's amazing to be surrounded by so many famous names. But I was also notified pretty late, so I don't really know what's happening where."

When she hears how far Kunolf has traveled, she loops around Starglass to move next to him. "You travelled from the edges of Equestria for this? What flight routes did you take?"

Surprised by the Pegasus addressing him, Kunolf needs a moment before he responds: "I´ve mostly traveld from one city or villagfe to the next, mostly by following along roads or flying as straight as possible towards my next location." he then walks on towards the meeting room the Chrystalmare wanted to see.

"Is that so? Mm... you're probably right about that. Borders have changed, along with what lies on them..." - Starglass admits to Kunolf, not sounding sad about it though. Meanwhile, she tries to remember whether she has actually heard of any coma occurences from outside of Equestria's borders, regardless of whether during this conference or from beyond it - "I'm sorry to hear that, mister Leifson. If it's indeed the same reason that brought us all here together, i can only say we're all do our best to help this cause as well" - the Crystal Pony sounded soothing, yet her voice resounded with her unshaken will. It was true that Starglass wished she could promise more. Indeed, that was beyond her grasp for now... yet the conference was far from over - and hope was firm among the kin. The heads of those in belief of a breakthrough were rising, even. The Crystal Pony's faith was unfaltering.

She trudged on towards the medical experts' meeting with resolve flashing in the eyes... which, considering her racial magic, bordered on being literal.

"We will."

As the Pegasus attempts to maneouvre around the Crystal Pony, the latter politely makes room for the flying pony, not having anything against it.

"So i take it you're here from yesterday, then?" - Starglass centres her attention at the notion that Eaglesong wouldn't have been able to enter this place without her mentor's help... considering the current, second day of the conference, was open to the public - "That's quite a rough time you've had as to not be able to get on with the flow since then. I'm guessing that's one of the reasons you're seeking a word with Mr. Sterile's, isn't it?" - she inquires, not sounding as compassionate as she could though. That could have had to do with the fact she's been heavily engaged herself ever since as well. They were all doing their part here.

Hearing the Griffin's last sentence, Starglass fits in one more question of her own:

"How long did that actually take you, Mr. Leifson?"

She wanted to compare it... with the flight time it took the chariot with the Crystal Pegasi to reach here.
