Rolf turned to Jeraylia and raised an eyebrow. "...I don't think whoever mined down here decided that the ultimate point of digging these tunnels and descrating graves was to come to a deep hole in the ground and make it a pool. Also, I'm not sure dwarves like swimming, anyway."

He glanced back down the hole. "Given the piles of soil leading to this hole, it's likely that this was used as a dumping ground for the dirt excavated by the miner's" He picked himself up and dusted himself off. "If anyone really wants to check down there, I can cast Spider Climb on them so they can go in and out easier. Otherwise, I suggest we continue." Rolf pointed over at the tunnel to the right of the hole.

Quick question, Zarhon. What's your protocol on learning spells from scrolls?

"Just give me one second." Horizon walks over to where the rope is anchored and begins pulling it up out of the hole, winding it as he goes. He then cuts it loose and secures it over his shoulder. "There. Now we have rope. And whatever went down there can't come back up and try to kill us."

Scrolls are one-shot spells, use em up and they blank themselves out. You could learn about what a spell would do from a scroll, and use said scroll to cast it (which would then blank out the scroll), but knowing how to summon it from nothing/memory needs the detailed knowledge contained within an appropriate spell-book. You could learn a spell in scroll form, though, assuming it contains the actual information of casting it (possibly on several different scrolls, in parts, or one really big scroll), rather than being a compressed, one-page, for casting-only version that will blank itself out once activated.

Are you done with this room then? Will you proceed to next tunnel, or does Zthulan/others want to goof around in this one a bit more?

Normally I'd wait for Zthulan, but since most of you agree, I'll get on with it. Zthulan can choose to stay or continue as others move on.

Most of the party continues down the other rocky tunnel. It is similar to the previous one, only this one turns into a tunnel of soil roughly halfway. From there it curves in a direction. More ringing sounds off behind you, undoubtedly from another wire trap somewhere in the this tunnel. The tunnel starts following the slightly chaotic, dead-end trails as before. A room soon comes up, ringing coming from it once again. This room has a bunch of miniature barrels in it. Most of the barrels are open and contain rocks, while a few contain more mining tools. There are a few barrels that are closed as well. There is a small table and chair here, with a lantern and some papers, a small notebook and some crude writing utensils. Some of the papers are scattered on the floor. A pair of pillars support this room. There are several more sleeping mats as well. A tunnel of soil is on the opposite side of this room.

"You know, I'm starting to think we went the wrong way." Horizon remarks, a strain of tension just barely audible in his voice. He walks to the table and begins looking over the books and papers for anything relevant.

Yes, you can read easily, provided the text is not encrypted or magical in nature. Searching might find you a few extra details, of course... But in your case, you flubbed it with a nat1, so time for hilarity!

Horizon, whilst moving to search the table, fails to notice a spider's web, chock full of hundreds of miniscule arachnids. His faceplate is now covered in them, scurrying about randomly, obscuring his vision (and attempting to enter the cheek slits). They are probably harmless.

Those are orb weavers, they are certainly harmless.
Edit: Unless they're Poison Exploding Orb Weavers I guess.

"Yeah, I don't think consuming myself with flames is the correct answer. If it was, I could do it myself." Horizon removes his helmet and starts sweeping the spiders off, smacking at one or two that managed to reach his neck. "Somebody go check those papers."

Rolf decided that Horizon could handle his bug problem. Or at least, he didn't want to be next to him in case he panicked.

Rolf instead tried looking at the papers on the table, seeing if there were any notes left by the miners, or possibly a map of all these labyrinthine tunnels.

Attempting to be the more mature of the two, Jeraylia backed away from Horizon with all the dignity she could muster. Unfortunately, she walked right back into another web laden with spiders. With her lips pressed tightly together in a grimace, she gave the world in general an unamused looked. Having tried and failed, miserably, she proceeded to flick spiders back at Horizon.

Both Rolf, Zthulan and Horizon take a look at the various papers, but find them completely indecipherable, being written in a crude language that is completely foreign to them. Skitter, on the other hand, recognizes the writing as that of his kobold kin! He pieces out several messages that appear to come from a diary, or a log of some sort...

~Digging going smoothly. Soil loose and easy. Several caves encountered, no biggie. Nothing good dug out.
~Chief says stop digging. Talk to tallies.
~Tallies not let us dig. Say too dangerous. Chief agree. Chief wrong. Still, listen to chief. Nothing good come from not listening to chief.
~New chief come. Much better. Tallies still not let us dig. Chief says dig. We dig.
~More caves. Good for dumping soil.
~Cave unsafe. Water unsafe.
~Nothing good found. Digging upwards. May get lucky.
~Two-Toe accidentally opened tunnel to outside. Beaten with own pick. Luckily, hole easily hidden.
~Dug into tallies corpse mound. Send runner to chief. No word.
~Still no word. Boring. Dug some corpses. Tasty.
~Runner come back. Not allowed to dig mound. Says don't get caught digging corpses for loot.
~Sick. No more corpse eating.
~Not many goodies so far. Digging easy, though.
~Found cave. Big hole to use. Dumping soil.
~Razil missing. Nowhere to go but back. Sent runner.
~Runner back, no Razil.
~Two-toe fell in cave. Idiot. Somehow not dead. Put sign to remind idiots. Left in cave as punishment.
~Two-toe missing. Sent Gazz and Fumer down.

Skitter sighed, "It would seem some of my idiot kin decided to dig in this area and didn't care that they were told not to. They found Zilean's coffin and it's unclear if they managed to open it. Said someone had an idea for how to deal with the traps on it and it ends there....then again Kobolds are idiots. On the other hand they're plenty willing to just throw bodies at a problem till it stops being a problem. The rope was left for a Kobold who got stuck down there and had to have starved to death at least by now. The alarms were to warn them of beasts of some kind. It doesn't say where they came in from or where they went but, it does say that the tunnel that leads outside I found earlier was just a mistake, so they probably didn't go out that way."

"Oh, good. As long as the diggers aren't an actual threat." Horizon stated mockingly. He walked away from the table and stood at the entrance to the next tunnel. "I guess that means we keep going?" He scans as far as he can down the tunnel for signs of life.
