"You didn't answer my first question." Arcantos said, a hint of a growl in his voice as he spoke. Not quite glaring at the newcomer, but his gaze was anything but nice. "You've given us no reason to trust you, and quite a few reasons to distrust you."

Re: A New World
"Harumph, you're no fun. Not like you've given me any reason to trust you - but that hasn't stopped me from asking you this favour. I assureyou any delay caused by my errand will be more than made up for."
"Anyways, what are you even accusing me of? You think I'm in league with this... what do they call themselves now... Coatltec empire? How laughable.
"You really needn't worry yourselves. Who I am isn't important right now. I've made my offer, take it or leave it."

Re: A New World
Ch'aska may not have had a lot of experience dealing with others who were not from her village, but even she knew this llama sounded shady. Still, if he was willing to help save her brother and the other captives, they might as well hear him out. The least the could do was find out exactly what it was that he wanted in the temples. She wasn't going to necessarily hand over extremely dangerous artifacts over to some llama she didn't know, but if not..." If, and only if, we were to agree to this proposal, what kind of artifacts would we be retrieving?
- ooc:
- History check to see what the Temples of the Sun and Moon are.
16+9=25
I guess add 5 if it is related to omens (totally going to get fk of the llama religion once I switch over to the new system)

Re: A New World
- History Check:
- Back home you have temples to Father Sun and Mother Moon, and there's the Temple of the Sun AND Moon in the capital, but no, that can't be what the... llama? is saying.
He is more likely referring to the two enormous pyramids in the city you just left- dedicated to the ancient dragons' own versions of the celestial gods.
Something moved under the llama's cloak- looking like he was waving a hoof vaguely as he responded to Ch'aska (not that you can see it clearly- how does he even move under so much fabric?)
"Simple things, probably an orb or bauble of some sort, one from each temple. You'll know them when you see them- shouldn't even be that hard to find."
Re: A New World
Ch'aska felt even more uneasy with that answer. "Just a bauble." That sounded plausible and not at all suspicious. " If you don't mind my asking, if it's so simple why do you need us to retrieve them?

Re: A New World
"I just can't!" He snapped momentarily before recomposing himself
"Ah, I can't. Not physically able to. Have you seen the size of those things? Whew! Talk about steps. The ruined city itself is so confusing - I get lost just looking at it, but you lot seem to know your way around."

Re: A New World
Arcantos listened in on the conversation between the llama with them and the cloaked llama as he thought about what was being asked and what was offered. Once the newcommer snapped, Arcantos had heard enough.
"No deal. You aren't telling us the whole story that much is obvious, and even if you did I doubt it would be the truth. Find some other lackies to fetch those artifacts. We have more important things to do."
Then, after this though, his body tensed suddenly, and he turned his head so he could look over his shoulder, looking a the young dragon on his back. "Did the priest guy ever tell you anything about the skull?"

Re: A New World
Piasa wondered at the strange conversation his allies were having, before jumping in himself. "Who are you, anyway? Why would those griffons not be part of the Coatltec Empire? I don't think you are who you appear to be, and would appreciate a little more honesty towards the drakes you're asking to retrieve ancient artifacts from sacred temples."
- OOC:
- I'm actually going to do a history check on what the old dragons thought the Sun and Moon deities were. That falls under Dragonlore, right?
History: 12 + 11 + 5 = 28 pretty good, I think.

Re: A New World
"Yes, I see, more important things, like talking about skulls. Now who's sounding suspicious?"
He turns to Piasa
"Well, aren't you insistent on the identity issue, huh? I could give you any number of names- but would you believe me? How about this- I'll tell you, truthfully, who I am, once you've done my task. Until then, let's preserve my lovely sense of mystery."
He seems confused at Piasa's other question.
"I didn't say the Griffons weren't: I said it's not like I'm working with them."

- History Check:
- Dragons have actually had a number of myths concerning the Sun and Moon. The temples in the old city are dedicated to all of them: and are largely dedicated to the Sun and Moon themselves: with each containing the Solar and Lunar calendar day markers respectively.
Some of the versions of Sun and Moon gods:
Ix Chel, Godess of the Moon, fertility, and medicine, and Kinich Ahau, God of the Sun
Alternatively, it is sometimes believed the Hero Twins of legend ascended to become gods of the Sun and Moon (or the sun and moon themselves)
Finally, the other main legend, is that there is (or was) a god of the Sun AND Moon, although most tales have him being thrown down by the the Hero Twins for some reason.
Re: A New World
Piasa looks a bit confused at the strange llama's last line, before enlightenment dawned on him. "My apologies, unknown one, I must have misheard you the first time." He turned around, finally noticing Arcantos looking very fed up with the stranger. "Alright, hold on. I've had an idea. I can take one of our willing companions with me back to the city, to look for this strange llama's artifacts, and you can take Rufus, whichever of our companions wishes to go with you, and this mysterious one, to track the griffons. You don't like him much, but neither do I, I don't trust him on his own while we do this. He promises us aid in our hunt, and we would be foolish to throw that away. But if he betrays us once he has what he wants, there is strength in numbers, and two against one are still not good odds against someone who keeps his cards held so close to his chest. Do not worry about how we will find you again, me and Rufus will always know each others location, no matter how far. Does anyone object, and does anyone volunteer?"
- OOC:
- I'm certain that this llama will either betray us, trap us, or be otherwise inconvenient, but damn if this hook hasn't hooked me. I'm a sucker for mysteries, it is my one weakness. Well, that and romances. And tragedy. And comedy, and... I should stop now.
Either way, I know I'm suggesting splitting the party, but it seems reasonable in this specific instance, since Piasa and Rufus basically share a mindspace, it allows for constant communication between the two groups. Also, I really want to know who this guy is, so I'm going to follow this little, probably wrong thread of thought in my mind, and roll history about the enemies of the Sun and Moon Gods/Twins/God/whatever, because that whole "what do they call themselves now" line still sounds suspicious, and "I JUST CAN'T" is REALLY suspicious. He also sounds too much like Discord for me to not kinda like him right now.

Re: A New World
- History Check pt. 2:
- Ah, I'm flattered to hear you say that.
Anyways, your history check:
Ix Chel and Kinich Ahau aren't known to have any particular enemies: though the gods are known to be jealous of each other and the attention and offerings by mortals.
They rarely impose on each others domains though, which is why the tale of the Hero Twins is so odd.
The Hero Twins made many enemies on their adventures, defeating many foes through a combination of clever trickery and martial prowess. The most notable of their enemies were the lords of the underworld, and Vucub Caquix, from whom's defeat they acquired their status as lords of the Sun and Moon. Though they defeated and humiliated many other gods and demons who might have borne grudges against them.
Re: A New World
A large part of Ch'aska was telling her that this was a bad idea, but her mind kept coming back to a single thought: He could help save Catequil. She owed him to see what this was, and if she didn't try and something went wrong, she would always wonder...
"If we want to split, I'll go with you to look at these artifacts, Piasa.

"I would be glad to have you accompany me, Ch'aska. We just need to know," he said, turning to Arcantos, "do you agree to this. This can only work if we all agree."

- Well, Curunir, I just have a great big ol' soft spot for the Sheogoraths and Sanguines and Discords and Qs of the world. Powerful crazy people make some of the best characters, you know? Any way, that history check does seem pretty useful, I just need to figure out how to use that information.
Anyways, time for adventure soon!

Erudis thinks on the question for a moment, "I know the skull was that of his mentor, the high priest before him, nothing more."

Re: A New World
"I see..." Arcantos said with a frown, not exactly happy with the answer. He wasn't exactly happy with Piasa's and Ch'aksa's desicions either. But what more annoyed him was how Piasa bugged him about it, leading to the blue dragon snapping. "Let me think about it, okay?!" Before turning away and staring back at the city, apparently thinking deeply.

Piasa holds up his forearms in front of him, his palms extended outward in a show of peace. "I apologize, Arcantos. That was rude of me. Think on it as long as needed."

"Thanks kid, that should help." Arcantos said after a short while, before turning back to the cloaked llama. "I don't like this, and I don't like you, but if I don't believe in allowing a group to split. Your help better be worth the effort this takes."

Re: A New World
"Alright, you all decided then? Run along, you don't have all day! Well, I guess you do- but still, the sooner you get done the sooner we can catch those griffons of yours!"
"My help most certainly is worth the effort it will take." he pouts. "Especially if my estimates of the effort it will take you to complete my task are correct."
"These negotiations have sure been exhausting. See you back up here when you're done!" he calls after you as you descend back to the city. If you look back, he's already disappeared.

- Spoiler:
- It's practically impossible to miss the Temples, as they tower above every other building.
Which one will you be going to first?
Re: A New World
Once they headed back to the city, Arcantos angled down to land, saying. "If its alright with you two, I want to land. Carrying the skull is getting a little annoying, and we need to decide which temple to go to first."

Re: A New World
Piasa follows Arcantos down to land, when Chaska spoke up. 'She has a good point. Any differences in the temples would not be insignificant. What did my elder's say about the sun and moon again?'
- OOC:
- Yay I have free time to post stuff and am immediately making two history checks, because I have not yet squeezed enough information from the DM to fill a bible yet. Firstly is a check to about how the versions of the Sun And Moon gods were worshipped in this city, and secondly a check to see if their worship involved any architectural trickery we should be wary of(such as the Aztec{I think} when they built their temples in that weird way I can't remember the specifics of). I don't think the first falls under dragonlore, but the second is definitely falling under Old Draconic Architecture.
History(1): 13 + 11 = 21
History(2): NAT 20 + 11 + 5 = 36 God damn that's amazing. Oh that feels so good after the week I've had.
Hopefully it won't be another week before I post again.

Re: A New World
For now, Arcantos ignored the others when he landed. Carefully examining the skull, wanting to know if it was possible to place it over his head like the gryphon priest did. Holding it in his hands was getting rather... counter productive.

Re: A New World
- Piasa : History Check:
- Here you go. As always, with such a successful check I'll try to mention anything else I've forgotten to mention or come up with later that directly relates to your check.
It's been so long since the city has been occupied, it's unsure exactly how worship was conducted (or who or what was worshipped), though it seems clear this may have changed over time. Various levels of the two pyramids have alcoves dedicated to different versions of the gods, and the summit temples seem to take a decided effort to not side with a specific god: instead being devoted directly to the sun and moon and respective calendars.
There are a few interesting architectural features in the construction of the pyramids: mostly tricks of light: with the Pyramid of the Sun marking solstices and equinoxes with a snaking pattern of light down its stairs, with thy pyramid of the moon doing the same each full moon. The summit temples also allow light from their respective spheres to enter, shining in particular ways on specific days.
The two structures are also built atop notable geologic features: the Temple of the Moon was supposedly built atop a spring, though its various fountains have long stopped working, and the Temple of the Sun was built atop a deep cavern system.
According to legend, the temples could defend themselves, with the temple of the Moon using ice, water, and stone, and the Sun using light, fire, and molten earth.
- Arcantos:
- The skull should fit on Arcantos's head, even if possibly more snugly than on the griffon. The skull is that of an old, and large (though not monstrously sized) dragon whose head had, at time of death, been larger than Arcantos's.
