The Rise of the Windigo King (OOC and Signup)
As the title says, signup and OOC page for the campaign I'll be GMing soon!
A little about the GM then: umm... there's not much of anything to say. This'll be my first campaign I've made and first time GMing anything so please bare with me.
Even though I say Sign-up, we've already managed to get a full party! I'll keep this section updated as we go with harmony, current money, and in case anyone has to leave or someone new joins! I'll take a page from my own GM (I'll be doing that a lot Xand) and trust you all with your own rolls. I'm pretty sure none of you would ever cheat anyway!
I'll also be doing something I read somewhere, possibly the pony handler's guide, possibly a D&D DM book I bought if no one objects. "offer the players a small amount ofexperience harmony at the start of the campaign to come up with a backstory for their character. With things like family and friends, desires, and things they may be known for having done in the past."
I figure fluff like that would be really helpful for me so if you're alright with it, I'll offer up some harmony for your past achievements. Maybe about 100? If there's anything in those stories you want hidden from other players completely, perhaps for a big dramatic reveal, please PM it to me!
THE PARTY! ((I'll be starting you off default with 300 bits in your wallets/coinpouch/whathaveyou))
RavenscroftRaven - Land Lobber the Minotaur Pirate - Lvl 1 - 300/1000 Harmony - 400bits
XandZero2 - Dr. Death Ray the Unicorn Scientist - Lvl 1 - 300/1000 Harmony - 300bits

Grey Pen - Mosstone the Unicorn Ranger! - Lvl 1 - 300/1000 Harmony - 300bits
As things are, I think we'll be ready to start by Monday if not sooner, just gotta finish up my monster-list and post it up for review! oh! and also, I made a map! This version was shrunk somewhat, if you want the full size version, I'll email it to you. It's very large though.
Port Summer on the island of Junna!

Port Summer on the island of Junna!
- map:
- fluff:
- Just off the coat of mainland Equestria lie the islands of Junna:a small chain of islands with the only settlement of note being Port Summer, itself a fairly small island town.
If there were two things about Junna and Port Summer that would stand out they’d be its climate and its history. The islands of Junna are warm and humid all year round, experiencing a sunny tropical warmth even when winter storms blow everywhere else. This unusual trait is so well known that many claim that “Time has stopped in Junna!” Indeed researchers, scholars, and mages often claim the islands always seems to be flooded with an unexplainable and ancient magic. This combined with the islands history of being won from native tribes of wild ponies that some would swear still hide in the jungles, and the ruins that often seem to prove them correct, has turned the small island town into a tourism hotspot!
It would seem that there is some new event every week to draw the eye and lighten the wallets of the visitors that flock to the island year-round. The town itself bares its history for all to see, the buildings in Port Summer all built from a local white stone that was frequently used by the ancient wild ponies. The town itself is built in four tiers, as part of a pony-made mountain built to help defend the original settlers. Even the tallest of buildings don’t go more than five floors high. All except the indomitable Fort Storm built at the very top tier of the town and whose high stone walls easily dominate the skyline. Once a fort built to contain and protect nearly the entire original settlement of Port Summer, it now acts as prison and headquarters for the guards stationed on the island, weathering age, wars, monsters, and storms for over 500 years with nary a crack or chip to be found.
Though just as the weather is not always sunny and calm, neither is the city always peaceful. The veritable flood of tourists, from families and salary ponies to movie stars and nobles, has attracted a swarm of rogues, con-artists, and pick pockets to stalk the shadows of the town and keep the guards busy.

A little backstory, a little item hoard?
Glad to be on-board!

I am so jealous of that map... best I've done is a dinky, unpleasant, not-even-close-to-being-to-scale map made in MS Paint. Is there a specific program for that?

That map is awesome! Also, is there a size limit? Because I can keep this going for like a page and a half.

Re: The Rise of the Windigo King (OOC and Signup)
Let's say limit it at the average length of an average episode of the series.
Re: The Rise of the Windigo King (OOC and Signup)
there isn't a specific program, I just used my copy of photoshop. I figure anything that lets you use layers could do it. All I did was doodle the islands and stuff with a paintbrush on the bottom layer, throw that grid on the layer above that, then use the paintbucket on individual squares to mark out various things.
If you're talking about the backstory thing there's no real limit. I like to read and the more you give me the more I have to use. If you're posting it here though, try to keep it in a single post to make it easier to find, and if you think it might be too long for everyone else, throw some spoiler tags around it so people can choose to look at it if they want or not.

Also, can I write it in the form of a personal flashback for Healing Torch, like, idk, how they say your whole life flashes before your eyes or something?

I wonder if I could do something like that with GIMP, then...

Re: The Rise of the Windigo King (OOC and Signup)
Just an update, working on a version of the map that might hopefully be easier to look at. Removing the gird, making the text bigger. Don't want anyone getting headaches from trying to use it x.x So while I'm at it, anyone want me to change the text color? I've heard red is hard to look at. Should be done within minutes.

WHat I'm thinking is , you give the big map you said you had to the archaeologist, because he'd know his way around the place he was exploring, right? right?

Re: The Rise of the Windigo King (OOC and Signup)
New map is up, seems easier to read to me at least.
As for the big map, the only difference between the big map and this one is that it is literally bigger in dimensions. So you could zoom in and see things more easily. This new version makes it easier to see the text anyway so the big map is almost a moot point.
As for this map's role in-game, this is basically the kind of map you'd find in a brochure stand being sold to tourists ((except presumably theirs isn't made of blocks)). There ARE things and locations I have planned that this map doesn't show simply because the guy who made the maps doesn't know about them. There are however some NPCs in-game who might know bits and pieces of these hidden things through their own personal experiences.

pretty much. hopefully it can be used for its original purpose, as a source to tips for rookie GMs
Re: The Rise of the Windigo King (OOC and Signup)
Oki-Doki Loki!
And that's how Equestria was made!
- Short Story:
A long, long time ago, the Ancients made the first minotaurs. They guarded labyrinths, keeping the paths clear and the routes known, guides and gardeners, guards... And glory-seekers. It was not long before the proud race left their homes in search of more of their own kind. The scheme set in motion, the Ancients would not interfere with the free will of their creation.
Millenia later, minotaurs are still an uncommon sight in most lands. They live in unsocial sociability, solitary but desiring the feeling of belonging, keeping only the most loosely-knit communities. Some joined with the smaller races, the ponies and the otters, for company not of their kith and kin. Others returned to their calling, patrolling the deep crevasses in the darkest paths beneath the ground. It was not unusual, however, for a minotaur to begin working within another path, another way to lead others through labyrinths. Mazes of the mind, of the waters, of the elaborate thoroughfares of cities, most civilized and social minotaurs eventually would become psychologists, sailors, or architects.
Land Lobber was born to a common minotaur family, which is to say, not a family. Being solitary and solid in nature, they did not mate for life. Beyond this, they left the nest early in life to attempt to find their calling. It was not as physical a marking as that of the equines, but it was no less a task in maturation. And so Land Lobber left his mother, to find his path in life. But that would take money.
There was always high demand for reliable workers in the mines. Diamond dogs were effective beasts, but they tended to eat and steal most of the profits. Unicorns were effective, but got lost within moments of not having Celestia’s light above their heads. Minotaurs were in high demand, and it paid good bits. For six years he toiled in the darkness of the iron mines, digging out swaths of stone with each swing of his pick and shovel. He loved the feel of power taming the very rock itself, but even though the mining tunnels were labyrinthine, it was not his maze to safeguard. On his birthing day, that sixth year in, he quit, with only his pick and a fair sum of money to his name.
The Isle of Langerhans had nothing for him, every job filled or not within his heart. He had to reach the mainland. That meant sailing. It was his first experience with it, but to save money, he joined in as a deckhand for the fairly standard journey. Well, it was supposed to be. An unexpected storm hit, something about a large unplanned disturbance in air pressure. The sailors worked hard, as the waves grew higher. A wind buffet knocked a keg into the navigator, and the wheel went wild. Land did what he could, and gripped the wheel. Four of its spokes cracked as he held it firm, holding the ship’s course. The waves grew higher, and riptides formed whirling about the boat. With arms formed from years of ripping the earth asunder, he held the ship. But what was unexpected was the spark. The feeling. There was a path, a route through the deadly cascade, a path that changed with every passing second.
True passion. This was the challenge that he needed, the form of his life. As he plowed through the raging and roiling waters, he smiled. Chaos around him, shouting, screaming, but he smiled. It stayed throughout the hour-long trip through the storm. It did not matter what might be at the mainland, the journey was the destination.
Reaching the mainland, he bought a small boat for himself with his savings, to ferry ponies to and from his historic island, but without the intensity, the danger, of that first time, it quickly grew routine. He needed more. Then the rumours started about pirates. Scourges of the seas, they stole from the freight boats. They were fast, skilled, and dangerous. It was an idea. A minotaur would need to sneak in, by boat, get aboard, reveal themself, intimidate, get the goods, load them, then once on his own boat, escape pursuit.
Three years later, and he was a very successful pirate. A terror. Many unnecessarily rich ponies had their purses lightened and got a very interesting tale to tell back at their country clubs. But one day, on a routine raiding run, he screwed up. In the retreat from the privateers and patrol boats that set a trap for the lone raider, he knew he could not win for speed. Even with massive arms, there was no wind for a sail, and their oars were far more numerous than his, unicorns filled their sails. So he cut into the whirlpool-laden paths that no sane pony would follow. And they didn’t, because doing so was stupid. The wind suddenly picked up as he approached the high cliffs nearby, and the water shifted. He was a master navigator, a master sailsman, but that meant nothing. His ability to see paths told him, there was no route. Every road led to destruction. With nothing left to do, he set sail towards the worst, larges destructive maelstrom of a pool, and screamed in defiance as he propelled into it.
He wasn’t sure when he came around. It was a sandy beach, fragments of wood scattered everywhere. Jetsam was everywhere. He rushed his hand to his hip. The pickaxe was still there. The gold rings were gone from one of his ears, though. He paid his due to the mistress of the seas, and she left him on this island, but removed his spoils.
There was smoke in the distance, perhaps some sort of bonfire, which meant civilization. Hopefully nopony he wronged, he only went after well-to-do targets, but regardless, out with no shelter on an unknown island, his ship wrecked, it was the only path to take in the maze of life. A moment was taken to collect the loose coins that washed ashore in a satchel, at least everything was not lost. He set out, which brings us to the start of this tale...
And that's how Equestria was made!

It's pretty short, just a quick thing I tossed together. Normally they'd be twice as long, but normally I make level 5 D&D characters, I need to justify level 1 and no wealth.
Re: The Rise of the Windigo King (OOC and Signup)
That was epic. Now anything I write is gonna suck in comparison... But seriously, that was awesome, and it had surprising depth for what amounts to a treasure hunter!

Re: The Rise of the Windigo King (OOC and Signup)
The trick is to toss some headcanon into whatever you're writing, whether it relates or not. Starting with the creation of the minotaurs... It really has nothing to do with the story, but I got 2.5 paragraphs out of it to make it feel bigger even though it's really in-world headcanon mythology. You can write something as good or better, I assure you. I've got confidence in you!
The story boils down to "A minotaur miner tried sailing, liked it, became a pirate, and got shipwrecked". I'm just unnecessarily wordy. Which reminds me, I should really finish the next chapter of my fanfic...
(I'm surprised no one commented on the name of the origin island. )

Re: The Rise of the Windigo King (OOC and Signup)
I have the START of one. I'm a slow writer and need inspiration to do a chunk. I will often just sit down and power 1000 words out, then have nothing come to mind for a week.
I've got 4 chapters (I'm not a fan of chapter 3 though) about a changeling that infiltrates the Canterlot castle a year before Chrysalis does, basically on a bet with her that he could.
