Uhhh...
I'm "Ravenscroft" on FIMfiction. I have "The Truth In Forgery" as an ongoing but SLOW project (inspiration is hard right now, as mentioned I need to be inspired AND free at the same time to write), as well as "The Harrowing Journey" which is a short chapter in The Album, a compilation project to show the day-to-day lives of every pony in the show. My chosen character for the project was Blueblood. It's chapter 2.

Wow! That was excellent! And it certainly helped me with coming up with ideas to work with your character!RavenscroftRaven wrote:Oki-Doki Loki!
- Short Story:
A long, long time ago, the Ancients made the first minotaurs. They guarded labyrinths, keeping the paths clear and the routes known, guides and gardeners, guards... And glory-seekers. It was not long before the proud race left their homes in search of more of their own kind. The scheme set in motion, the Ancients would not interfere with the free will of their creation.
Millenia later, minotaurs are still an uncommon sight in most lands. They live in unsocial sociability, solitary but desiring the feeling of belonging, keeping only the most loosely-knit communities. Some joined with the smaller races, the ponies and the otters, for company not of their kith and kin. Others returned to their calling, patrolling the deep crevasses in the darkest paths beneath the ground. It was not unusual, however, for a minotaur to begin working within another path, another way to lead others through labyrinths. Mazes of the mind, of the waters, of the elaborate thoroughfares of cities, most civilized and social minotaurs eventually would become psychologists, sailors, or architects.
Land Lobber was born to a common minotaur family, which is to say, not a family. Being solitary and solid in nature, they did not mate for life. Beyond this, they left the nest early in life to attempt to find their calling. It was not as physical a marking as that of the equines, but it was no less a task in maturation. And so Land Lobber left his mother, to find his path in life. But that would take money.
There was always high demand for reliable workers in the mines. Diamond dogs were effective beasts, but they tended to eat and steal most of the profits. Unicorns were effective, but got lost within moments of not having Celestia’s light above their heads. Minotaurs were in high demand, and it paid good bits. For six years he toiled in the darkness of the iron mines, digging out swaths of stone with each swing of his pick and shovel. He loved the feel of power taming the very rock itself, but even though the mining tunnels were labyrinthine, it was not his maze to safeguard. On his birthing day, that sixth year in, he quit, with only his pick and a fair sum of money to his name.
The Isle of Langerhans had nothing for him, every job filled or not within his heart. He had to reach the mainland. That meant sailing. It was his first experience with it, but to save money, he joined in as a deckhand for the fairly standard journey. Well, it was supposed to be. An unexpected storm hit, something about a large unplanned disturbance in air pressure. The sailors worked hard, as the waves grew higher. A wind buffet knocked a keg into the navigator, and the wheel went wild. Land did what he could, and gripped the wheel. Four of its spokes cracked as he held it firm, holding the ship’s course. The waves grew higher, and riptides formed whirling about the boat. With arms formed from years of ripping the earth asunder, he held the ship. But what was unexpected was the spark. The feeling. There was a path, a route through the deadly cascade, a path that changed with every passing second.
True passion. This was the challenge that he needed, the form of his life. As he plowed through the raging and roiling waters, he smiled. Chaos around him, shouting, screaming, but he smiled. It stayed throughout the hour-long trip through the storm. It did not matter what might be at the mainland, the journey was the destination.
Reaching the mainland, he bought a small boat for himself with his savings, to ferry ponies to and from his historic island, but without the intensity, the danger, of that first time, it quickly grew routine. He needed more. Then the rumours started about pirates. Scourges of the seas, they stole from the freight boats. They were fast, skilled, and dangerous. It was an idea. A minotaur would need to sneak in, by boat, get aboard, reveal themself, intimidate, get the goods, load them, then once on his own boat, escape pursuit.
Three years later, and he was a very successful pirate. A terror. Many unnecessarily rich ponies had their purses lightened and got a very interesting tale to tell back at their country clubs. But one day, on a routine raiding run, he screwed up. In the retreat from the privateers and patrol boats that set a trap for the lone raider, he knew he could not win for speed. Even with massive arms, there was no wind for a sail, and their oars were far more numerous than his, unicorns filled their sails. So he cut into the whirlpool-laden paths that no sane pony would follow. And they didn’t, because doing so was stupid. The wind suddenly picked up as he approached the high cliffs nearby, and the water shifted. He was a master navigator, a master sailsman, but that meant nothing. His ability to see paths told him, there was no route. Every road led to destruction. With nothing left to do, he set sail towards the worst, larges destructive maelstrom of a pool, and screamed in defiance as he propelled into it.
He wasn’t sure when he came around. It was a sandy beach, fragments of wood scattered everywhere. Jetsam was everywhere. He rushed his hand to his hip. The pickaxe was still there. The gold rings were gone from one of his ears, though. He paid his due to the mistress of the seas, and she left him on this island, but removed his spoils.
There was smoke in the distance, perhaps some sort of bonfire, which meant civilization. Hopefully nopony he wronged, he only went after well-to-do targets, but regardless, out with no shelter on an unknown island, his ship wrecked, it was the only path to take in the maze of life. A moment was taken to collect the loose coins that washed ashore in a satchel, at least everything was not lost. He set out, which brings us to the start of this tale...
And that's how Equestria was made!
I didn't consider that these stories might bring you right up to the start of the campaign though. I should post some information on Port Summer up for anyone else to reference if they want to do the same for theirs.
Re: The Rise of the Windigo King (OOC and Signup)
Hey, if you want, mine can be retconned into "3 weeks ago, he washed ashore..." and have plenty of time to reaquaint. Whichever fits the story better, I'm flexible with the path of my characters.
Re: The Rise of the Windigo King (OOC and Signup)
Hey, can I get a general idea of when this takes place in relation to the show's timeline?

RavenscroftRaven wrote:The trick is to toss some headcanon into whatever you're writing, whether it relates or not. Starting with the creation of the minotaurs... It really has nothing to do with the story, but I got 2.5 paragraphs out of it to make it feel bigger even though it's really in-world headcanon mythology. You can write something as good or better, I assure you. I've got confidence in you!
The story boils down to "A minotaur miner tried sailing, liked it, became a pirate, and got shipwrecked". I'm just unnecessarily wordy. Which reminds me, I should really finish the next chapter of my fanfic...
Well, here's my shot at backstory:
- Spoiler:
- Tradition is the way of the Zebrican tribes. Always do things the same way, never innovate from what works. Anything else is suicide, for there are many great beasts that would devour a zebra who deviates from the traditions.
Hallyn hated it.
She lived for those times when she'd sneak off to try to find some new, more efficient sources of food. She lived for the times when she could test her valor against a lion or a pack of hyenas (even if most of them involved her running away). In short, she lived for everything the tribe could not afford to do. When she inadvertantly led hyenas to her tribe's encampment, they had no choice. Hallyn was banished before she had even earned her tribal markings, and was forbidden to return.
In a way, it suited her. She had never been close with the tribe, not even with her own family. She didn't have those restrictive rules weighing her down anymore. But soon she found herself falling into routine as she fought the dangers she could (not many) and avoided those she couldn't (most of them). Soon she decided: it was time to leave Zebrica, before she became as stagnant as her tribe.
Northward she traveled, venturing into unknown lands with unknown dangers. She felt alive again where before she had felt stifled, and would often stay in a place for a couple of months before the dangers became routine, then moved on.
Eventually, she made her way to Bordertown in pony country, where she was greeted with bemusement and puzzlement, for it was not often that zebras left Zebrica for any reason. Some small-minded ponies persecuted her for her species, and so she moved on again after a month or so. It hadn't been a total waste, however; she had picked up much of the Equestrian language in Bordertown.
She kept wandering for a year or so, until she finally settled in a region of Equestria known as Prance. She stayed there for some time: the Prench were adventurous ponies who always had influxes of new things to try, whether it be food, mountain climbing, or any number of regional sports that were made up haphazardly. She loved it there and would happily have lived there all her life.
But then she was approached by a stranger, a wandering unicorn traveler named Guardian who sought companions for an excursion in the Ancient Castle of the Pony Sisters in the Everfree Forest after the Nightmare Moon incident. His interest in what else the castle may have contained was piqued, and he needed ponies who could think on their hooves and deal with danger to help him satisfy his curiosity. Naturally, Hallyn volunteered, and became part of a party that included: Atrotsitus, a perpetually angry pegasus there for his ferocity; Carol Mareis, a gentle earth pony singer who spoke with animals and negociated peaceful solutions when possible; a mysterious gypsy pony of unknown species named Indigo-1 who healed their wounds; Larfleeze, a kleptomaniac boar who instructed the party in stealth; Sinestrot, a truly intimidating bat-winged pegasus whose combat talents kept them all alive; and Saint Trotter, a naive earth pony cleric of Celestia who helped with the more basic necessities such as gathering food.
Together they forged their way through the Everfree Forest and to the castle. At that point, the puzzling, ever-changing interior of the castle slowly but surely isolated every party member. After much fruitless wandering, Hallyn came across a chamber that contained the corpses of her party.
She had failed them, or so Hallyn thought as she stumbled out of the chamber. Her job had been to support the others in their more specialized tasks, and she had allowed herself to be separated from them! The one time she had something worthwhile to accomplish, something beyond her own goals, and she botched it, costing lives in the process!
She didn't know how long she wandered after that. She was too guilt-ridden to care. But she slowly came to terms with her failure, and vowed that she would never again let anypony die because she had been careless. Not on her watch!
It was then that she stumbled on another chamber, one with a green ring and a lantern within. The ring awakened from its dormancy and bonded with Hallyn, who vowed to use the ring's power to defend those who couldn't help themselves.
And so she escaped the castle and began her new career of defender and watchpony over all of Equestria. But every day, on the thirteenth of Trotober, she stops to remember her party, those who lost their lives because she hadn't been vigilant enough...
And that's how I got my Cutie Mark!

@Raven
Don't worry about that. I already have an idea for yours from what you typed that fits well enough with what I have planned.
@Subjectz
I would probably place this happening around the same time as the episode "Dragon Quest".
@Warrior
That was great! Gives me a good idea about your characters motivations too! Thank you!

Oh crud... I just realized, that removes the entire rational for my character hating changelings. If his parents haven't died in the Changeling Invasion, then why would he hate changelings? I don't suppose there's any way the timeline can be... tweaked a little?Dr Blight wrote:@Raven

Re: The Rise of the Windigo King (OOC and Signup)
Back story time ( I am not much of a writer)
- Spoiler:
- Well I was born about thirty years ago on the western coast of Equestria as the middle of three half sisters. For the first twelve years of my life the two and then three for us were inseparable always doing everything together. Shortly before my thirteenth and shortly after her fifteenth birthday my elder sister left the nest in order to make her mark on the world I left home soon afterwards.
For reasons lost to my memory I decided to explore the old world. In time I reached the Desert of the Empty Quarter it suffices to say that I was ill equipped for such a location. I wandered through that accursed place for three days slowly dieing until I was found by T.E.A. a Unicorn archaeologist and my future mentor and father figure.
Over the next five years I studied in the greatest centers of learning the world over and participated in countless digs of ancient civilizations. While on one of these digs I discovered something that would soon grow into an obsession. It started off as a routine excavation of an tomb in an area to the north-west of Trottinham. I had managed to discover a second far older barrow beneath the tomb. The barrow belonged the one of the last of the deer kings I could attempt to describe the barrow but it is far beyond my abilities. At some point within the barrow I obtained my cutie mark but that is insignificant next to the mystery that I had found. How could a civilization so great fall so suddenly. Excuse me I am getting off topic.
The next twelve years were less eventful the only truly notable events being my participation in the investigation of the ancient parts of the city of Paradise, my collaboration in various books, and my scarce lectures in schools.Perhaps my next expedition shall be more noteworthy as it is to the Junna archipelago.

Subjectz: You were born in a border town near the badlands. Changelings were more of a constant threat, even if a mild one, there than in Canterlot, far in-land. One killed one of your parents to feed off the other, maybe?

Re: The Rise of the Windigo King (OOC and Signup)
For now we're still on track for Monday but I need to have Xand's character sheet before we start and give him a chance to write up his backstory if he wants the starting harmony.
I'll be posting up my updated monster list for review later today and note down some of the ideas I've gotten from these stories. from there I'll begin typing up the starting post ahead of time.

I believe Monday was mentioned in passing back in the posts somewhere.
EDIT: How do I get ninja'd when if you post, it interrupts if new posts come in?!
